So I just purchased an LG blu-ray player during the black friday event.  I bought the Transformers 2 blu-ray edition just to test it out.  The picture quality looks perfect!  To compliment the picture perfect picture quality would be to add a nice surround sound home audio setup.

Now my question to you all is, which do you all recommend?  Brand?  Series?  I don't want many speakers.  The minimum, the better!  My budget is to not spend more than 5 bills (500 bucks).  Should I expect to pay more?  I don't know much about these kind of things so hollar at me.

Depends...  you can get those home system in a box stuff...but they don't really sound great.   If I was to get a system in a box I guess it would be yamaha.   Not a fan of Sony.   I just setup mine with all klipsch speakers 5.1

Lots of info from HTIB's to high end ones.  I have the Onkyo HT-S6100 and am quite happy with it.

get the BANG & OLUFSEN system for your crib.....balla status.

i forgot... stay away from bose.   They just have great marketing that makes them stand out

Buy used off either forum mentioned already or [URL]http://www.hometheaterforum.com/[/URL]. Especially now seeing as alot of people upgrade this time of year. You can get great deals on good used stuff. $500 is not goina get you much quality brand new.

AVS Forum is where it's at. Stay away from HTIBs and Bose.

I'd say start with a decent receiver and upgrade speakers/sub as budget or room allows. Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer are all good brands from what I've read.

I'm still content with the HT that I pieced together 4 years ago for under a grand. I plan on upgrading the floorstanders, center and surrounds soon.

- Panasonic XR55 7.1 digital receiver (if I can find an XR57 than I'm upgrading)
- BIC Acoustech 12" Subwoofer (this thing knocks for $250)
- pair of Polk Audio R30 floorstanders
- Polk Audio CS1 center
- Four Polk Audio R10 surrounds

now we're talking good quality and good setup for a budget price...   Most people don't know or don't want to spend the time to know.   The AVS forums like mentioned before can help you alot.  I bet someone has already asked the same question on the forum.

quick question, id like to maybe get a whole set but a lot of sets come with the blu ray player.  Are there any that sels just the speakers, subs, tweeters by itself?

onkyo is good, ive had quite a few of their receivers/cd players/dsp processors/etc and they all worked great and lasted a lot of use.

i have a home theatre sub sitting around if youre interested. energy es-12 box & plate amplifier with a generic sub installed (original one blew after cranking it up way too high with max gain.. stupid i know lol). it sounds pretty good but the sub can be upgraded to any 12" subwoofer if you so choose down the line. i can also throw in a 12' monster cable subwoofer cable. $80
