2jz Volvo wagon not quite VIP but awesome daily!!
Figure I'd share this build with Yalls VIP'ers since my G50 president project is taking forever. Not the most VIP car, but has leather and Junction Produce belt covers. Started as a 1989 740 turbo wagon. I love the car so much that when the transmission began acting funny, I decided to keep it rather than get another car as I normally do. Problem was, I don't really have Volvo parts laying around, but do have lots of Japanese engines and parts. I considered everything from SR20 nissan engines, RB26 skyline, 1jzgte and 2jzgte. I knew I would keep it automatic for some reason so I had to consider transmission control options. After thinking it over, I settled on the 2JZ engine due to the transmission control built into the ECU for ease of install and decent stock power. Plus, they're stupid cheap.
Got an early aristo engine, put rear sump supra pans on it, supra water pump, new seals and belts.
Engine bay the day we pulled motor..
2jz in..
Shot of wagonness...
For mounts, all I did was add plate to top of right volvo mount bracket and slightly change the angle
Forgot about hardware clearance so had to mill some out.
Left mount.. Had to add piece of pipe to change the angle and space up to clear rack stuff and then add plate to space to rear. Again, stock volvo mount bracket
Pretty easy. Using delrin for mockup mounts due to ease of machining and cheap. Forgot to add that you have to cut up the subframe pretty serious and restructure for sump clearance. Plus massaging the tunnel a bit to clear the rear turbo compressor inlet. Not a problem if going single. I like sequential twins though and am keeping it that way for a bit.
Trans mount can somewhat be seen in background, I sort of made from stuff that was laying around the shop. It was 2AM. I suck at MIG welding and wanted it done fast so don't mind the ugliness. Still easy though.
It fits surprisingly well and looks like it belongs in there. A brake line out of the master cyl is close, but fine. That's about it. Tons of room everywhere. Here's a few shots from various angles for reference.
I have a custom dual pass radiator from Griffin and a Spal fan that I should have tomorrow or monday that I need to have before making intercooler and piping.
For Power steering fluid connections, I'm using all earls for the high pressure and the stock volvo low pressure line due to clearance issues. The rack fittings are 14mm X 1.5 and you have to use a banjo to -6 to clear the crossmember. Pump is 16mm X 1.5. Feed from stock volvo reservoir to pump is same size and will be used.
That's where I am for now. I wish I could work on it full time rather than 8 or so hours a week after hours, but if everything goes as smooth as it has to date, it should be completed pretty soon. Anyways, I'll try to keep taking pics to share since most of my friends aren't really into this sort of thing. I'm really into this car though and figured I'd share my excitement.
More pics from today. Kind of traded cars with my buddy Brian. He worked on my wagon and I worked on his mustang. Something about not working on your own car makes it nice sometimes. Only problem is, you gotta give control to whoever is doing the work which is difficult for me. He got the radiator installed and half the intercooler is done. Waiting on some cast 90's to weld to the end tank and throttle body. Hot pipe and intake pipe done. Probably make an airbox too. Need some rad hoses and heater hoses next. Pretty sweet.

Some shots of fitting of 2010 front end on the '08 mustang drift ****. That's what I was slaving on. I hate anything body related. Better than working on my own car though. I cut the hell out of it. LOL.
Maybe I'll get some more stuff done next week. Can't wait to get my car back. Sick of driving this truck.
Exhaust from rear. Basic turndown. Nothing fancy to attract any attention.
Ditched the goofy volvo hangers and just made some out of stainless. Love how everything is removable minus the wiring.
Over the axle part. Recycled from an RX7 downpipe. Still has an O2 sensor bung in it. LOL. Doing my part for the environment.
This is a long, straight exhaust.
Sweet adapter to convert from the goofy 3 bolt flange o a more standard 4 bolt. Just shortened the front end of the shaft for now until I swap rears.
Using a Z32 300zx fuel filter. MAde a bracket out of some 3" stainless tubing. Fits in the area where the OEM pump and filter once was.
Under shot of radiator area.
Made a v-band adapter to go from the stock JDM twins to the exhaust so I can just make a downpipe when I go single.
This thing is great...
And greater because I can tape all kinds of stuff on it's wagonnessss.

Mess of noodles. Gotta wire up my engine management. SAFC. It's to funny that I don't even need real management if I keep it under 600 or so HP. Stock ECU does fine with timing. Gotta love it.
engine bay getting closer. No gas tank in it at the moment so it now doesn't run. Broke part of the sender plate and haven't had time to hunt for one at the junk yard and noone has one for some reason.
Huge volvo temp sender I had to put in. Worst electrical connector design ever.
Worked on it some today. Snapped these pics earlier. Maybe take some tomorrow when I make this shifter work. Just need fuel again and it should be driving.
More pics....
Shifter. It's a heavily modified MKIV supra shifter. Took 4 hours to make it fit in car and connect to transmission. Not perfect, but it does shift the trans so that works for me. First time messing with auto shifters. Had to change the angle off the pivot to clear things which caused me to modify the lockout thingy for it to go into all the gears properly. Not very fun.
Saw a clear path to easily get the car on the dyno, so I did to ease diagnosing the fuel cut issue I'm having. It's def a boost cut after the second turbo starts coming on. Pretty lame, but looks like it'll have a decent powerband fo a daily driver. I was having weatherstation issues, so some parameters are inaccurate as far as temp and baro pressure goes. I also was pretty much logging data to pinpoint a problem and did not complete logging to have a clean graph so it keeps logging and trails back. Also, I was not logging Intake air temp, EGT or any additional temps and/or pressures in case anything shows as strange values. Just a basic diagnostic pull.
Showing AFR and boost spike

Showing torque. LOL.

A snapshot of this pull.

And a pic of car on machine.
VID from about an hour ago. Down the street burnout. LOL.

It is a wagon. Just because you think "it's dumb LOL", you gotta keep talking trash. I don't care that you don't like it, but it obviously bothers you that I enjoy all of my cars in any way I see fit. I even love the beater car I can jump down steps for fun. If it should be moved, I'm fine with that. I don't know what you drive nor do I care. I could say mine is better, have built better, seen better, driven better but again who cares. You sir shall be my new best friend on here. Maybe I'll put a roof rack and fixed gear on it so I can be cool like you or at least try to be.
