Slowmotion RA1 Build

This by no means is a daily updated thread, but more of a compilation of things to come over the next 12-15 months. [I]Updates will be made as the car progresses.[/I]
 
Just a collection of parts for now. (Garson, Anceltion, JP, Honda Access). Also changed out all bulbs on the interior and tag with raybrig LED's.
 
I plan on doing a full repaint of the van in the spring/early summer. ([I]Poll attached[/I]) for color plans. I'm leaning to the new accord or TL color: Diamond White Pearl. 
 
[I]Plans also include[/I] doing the Garson full black leather interior, curtains, neck pads, pillows, full badging, new carpet and floor mats, headliner and full wood interior trim.

Still need to cut & buff the front bumper, door caps, side skirts, mirrors, mirror covers, tail gate trim and other misc. items, and reinstall the glass, lights etc...

The body shop did an AMAZING job on this one. They put in way more hours than originally planned and it looks amazing in person. You can't find a single tape line on the body, because there aren't any. The Lexus 460 Exhaust and the JDM Tail gate look OEM to me, like they were made that way to begin with. The antenna delete, wiper delete, emblem delete all turned out great.

i wouldnt recommend WDP (white diamond pearl)  i own a WDP TL and i like the paint, but i am gonna end up respraying my car a different color.  it looks too yellow whenever its in less than ideal lighting (95% of the time)

that would be nice.... color wise i would do something other than white myself like gold or red :)

I plan on doing the interior black, so I want a color that will compliment a dark interior. I doubt that a beige/gold color exterior will be the compliment.

The quality of the PVC leather, any inputs on this? 

Katskin here in the USA makes a full leather kit for the Odyssey ($900) and its all genuine leather (any color as well). They also include the door kit.

mine is soft as hell, just haven't sat in them to know the durability....

Does it look as good in person as real leather?

Everyone's opinion is different.. to be honest, I like it as much if not more...  again, as far the quality goes, it's really soft, the color is awesome... but the durability is where the information is lacking... the quality of the work is top notch as far as i can tell though (I'm really no expert)

i have the type jewel sitting in my house for a UCF10. and it was pretty good. went on easy, stayed wear free for like 6 months that it was in the car. 
no complaints here

as for color what about a dark brown with some gold in it or a dark purple....

Dark brown or root beer would be cool. Never thought about that.

I hear that..I bought my RL1 about 6 months ago now wit a blown motor.When I got another motor I changed all the same parts  and then sum.I forsee no problems anytime soon:biggthumpup:.Gonna inspect all my suspension parts next and change wit aftermarket accessories.

Yea, the previous owner of this van didn't do maint very well. There are other issues I have to deal with, as well as replacing the carpet and door inserts (kid stains). I can't understand why someone would let their kids destroy their car...

I've decided it's pretty much going to be a new van once I finish. Inside, outside, and under the hood.

i have the same tail lights can i suggest getting new oem tail light gaskets.. i didnt change mine and the lights fill with water/ moisture... all over 14 dollar gaskets...

i have the gaskets now i think im gonna do them soon and see if it helps.

Already did that a few weeks ago. I already installed 2 sets of gaskets, yes, (I double stacked them), and bolted them on tight. No leaks whatsoever.

made some progress on the corner lights today.
Did a full clear on the lenses (no more amber inserts), and added LED's to each side. Soldered and heat shrank every connection, and the separate bundles as well. Only took about an hour and a half each side.

I'm ordering 30 yards of 3M vehicle wrap vinyl and I'm going to do a full vehicle wrap on the van. I plan on body working each panel (remove dents/scratches) and removing each to install the vinyl perfectly. I'm thinking a solid body color and the roof matte black.

Yea, there in pretty good shape. I was thinking of doing the face in matte black and a full chrome on the barrel with new hardware. It's about $40 each face to refinish, so not too bad. The bolts are getting a little rusty on the back side. Any recommendations on where to get hardware cheap online (instead of going to fastenal?)

Spent a few hours this weekend taking car of some rust...Catching it early before it gets worse.
 
Did some wet sanding, priming and 3M coating to protect everything. Also got the tail lights installed. Brakes were due for replacement so I also changed out with fresh drilled rotors and ceramic pads.

Started fitting the rear bumper today. Got to make some brackets to support the lower portion and start prep. Fits nearly perfect.

Got the Garson front bumper fitted and the Garson Premium Grille installed. Still needs some prep and sanding but otherwise a near perfect fit.

wheel is nice but not a fan of the difference in color compared to the dash.

The dash isn't staying that color bro. The entire interior is out of the van (except the dash) and getting refinished. Once that is done, then I can start work on the dash.

Those pieces are the plastic chromed. We sent them out to get chromed for him. We're working on the rest of his interior as we speak, but i'll let him tell you when it's ready.

I've been working on my sub box for the back for a few days now, it's looking pretty nice.

Started with some 3/4" MDF, made a dual-chamber box for (2) solobaric 8" L5's and the middle will feature an Infinity Mirror. I lined the interior chambers with fiberglass resin so it will be solid. 
I will begin working on the top plate tomorrow.

A few updates on the box.
 
Still working on the infinity mirror for in between the subs, but here's whats done so far. There was a ton of test fitting and modification to the trim panel. I ended up making 3 templates before finalizing on one good one, and as you can see it fits like a glove, within 1mm of the back seat hinge and even spacing across the front (will later be filled when the box is wrapped with leather). The airspace is calculated @ .75cu each chamber, and a large infinity mirror will be positioned between each subwoofer. I also lined both air chambers with fiberglass resin to seal it, and add some addt'l strength to the MDF. Instead of going super-heavy competition, I like a slight boom with good SQ and these do it. :shrug:
 
So far, about $75 in materials spent. Far less than the $400-500 quote I was given to build this...

You want to Bezel the underside of the top plate so it doesn't scrape when taking it out or putting it in....

that side mount box, that will be where compressors go when I go air...space reserved!

The box is covered in Garson DAD Vega black leather material, which will also be in other parts of the car later on (so it will flow together nicely). If you haven't seen the Vega material in person, it's super bad-ass stuff and easy to work with.

At first glance I thought it was lego lol

Here's the start after a few hours of wiring. Size is roughly 6"x13". Super bright blue LED's and 24g wiring (reduced bundles to 14g I had around the garage) Heatshrink applied to all connections. Custom aluminum frame LEDs are inset into. No wiring will be visible once installed.

Got the first round wired up and set on the bottom mirror panel.

as of right now i really like the before wheels...

before wheels are just daily's...not big enough in person, although it could just be the matte black color. Looks a lil' too sporty for what the finished van will eventually look like after paint.

Test fit.

Now time to roll the fenders and go lower. Just barely clears the lip by 1mm, once I roll and go lower the lip of the wheel will touch the body perfectly flush (when I'm on air).

And everything fit back together. Nothing professional, just some snaps of the progress. Still needs a lot of work before paint. And yes I know, the door caps are not installed yet. I don't plan on installing them until it goes to the body shop.

When I get the air suspension I will be able to lower it the remaining 2.5" and tuck that rear tire :) 

it's hard to tell from these photos, but the rims are very flush with the outside of the fender. The rear wheel lip sticks out just a bit from the rear fender lip.

Bout time.. this things lookin good, And coming together pretty fast... Bout to reach that "what kind of van is that?, and what did you do to it status.."

Decided to tackle the upper control arms, ball joints, and outer tie rods...
Made a pretty noticeable difference in the firmness over bumps and feel in the wheel.

Started on the exhaust tip molds today...this is gonna be sweeeeedaddyT

I did a lot of planning before actually starting, a good idea to do before hacking up your expensive body kit. Here's some progress I made today on my conversion. Instead of buying a single exhaust I chose to cut/modify my Garson LX Rear bumper for the dual LS460 exhaust, it seems the cleanest VIP style exhaust that I have seen on an RA1. Once I finish the rear bumper work I am having a local shop fab up the dual exhaust. 

Started with stock cutout on passenger side that had to be filled in order to fit the tips, and the right side had to be properly cut.

After cutting away the stock exhaust trim, grinding smooth and prepping the surrounding fiberglass to accept the new glass - OEM no more!

Not yet...

still debating between doing a wrap for temporary or doing the full paint. Eitherway, a ton of body work has to be done to the shell before either can happen. I'll work on it a bit at a time until the majority is finished and i have a decision.

Update.

Finished setting the right tip. This one was a pain in the ass, lexus didn't cut it quite as good as they did on the left one so it took hours of trimming and adjustments to sit properly...still have some finessing to do before filling and blocking.  It doesn't look as easy as the photo appears, it's not a simple "cut" and install. The tips have multiple compound curves that are very hard to match up so that it fits perfectly.

Note: if you are a beginner at fabrication I don't recommend you try this as your first project...Get some skills under your belt before doing something as demanding as this. I have about 24 hours into this conversion so far.

Here are the samples back from the upholstry shop...unfinished state now but soon to be perfect.

They are looking pretty fresh. We chose to match the Garson seat covers with the short grain black leather material, french seams where different sections meet. The panels have 1/4" soft foam underneath which feels plush and soft to the touch. Over that, Garson Vega material...which will match the rest of the interior when it's done. 
One of the more important things was making sure that the "diamonds" line up horizontally across the panel, they did a pretty good job making sure that was on point.

Slowly but surely. Still waiting on bits to come in from JP, and in the mean time, exploring a mild wide body conversion starting with the front fenders. Picked up some spare parts to practice on at the salvage yard yesterday.

Ok so just picked up the interior door panels from the upholstry shop...and what a transformation! After a 2 month wait...

Total redo on the panels:
- Panel Color change from gray to OEM black
- Memory Foam insert
- Garson Vega leather center
- Matte black leather trim w/ french seams
- Chrome-dipped map light, door lock trim and door handle (not pictured)
- Wood-dipped door handle pull & cup holder (to match steering wheel)

For such a long time in a body shop that's almost surprising, but good to hear your nearly at the finish line =)

over a hundred hail dents had to be repaired plus countless others from day to day use, fitting of the body kit + door caps, shaving of the door moldings & antenna & rear wiper arms etc. there was a very long list. In fact, we just bought a brand new hood because the old one had more damage than it was worth fixing.

Finished RA6 rear tail gate modifications...Now it will look factory! but RA6. It's a small detail but will make the rear of the car much newer looking. 
Note the rear wiper is deleted as well.

The body shop did an amazing job with this paint. It's a 12 layer process ; 6 of which are pearl coats, the top clear is 4 more. 
They used 4000 PPG clear so it will be a solid, durable protection. 

This Odyssey will be VIP in no time!

The simple change of the ra6 hatch makes a big diff. Cant wait to see this finished

Honda ordered all new gaskets for the glass, door trim, seals, roof molding and such....
I still need to replace the front and rear glass due to damages, but that will come later.

Still need to cut & buff the front bumper, door caps, side skirts, mirrors, mirror covers, tail gate trim and other misc. items, and reinstall the glass, lights etc...

The body shop did an AMAZING job on this one. They put in way more hours than originally planned and it looks amazing in person. You can't find a single tape line on the body, because there aren't any. The Lexus 460 Exhaust and the JDM Tail gate look OEM to me, like they were made that way to begin with. The antenna delete, wiper delete, emblem delete all turned out great.

I plan on changing every bolt on the van eventually with a stainless steel one so it doesn't rust quite as much. It seems the factory washers are the culprit to most of the corrosion. Stainless is a better solution since it doesn't rust.

Found that a few of the studs on my air struts were stripped / broken so I decided to tear down and replace all of them with grade 8 hardware. Cut / Welded new studs in place. Also refurb'd the top hats and cleaned / lubed the pillow ball mount.

While I was in the fenders, decided to gut and strip them down, and reline them with truck bed liner. It's a lot tougher than regular spray-on under coating which can flake off after a couple of years of abuse...I just used a wire brush and brake cleaner to strip and prep the surface. This should be more durable protection, and cut down on road noise as well.

Started to work on pulling the cruise control system out and cleaning up the engine bay a bit. Pulled the stock battery, stock battery tray and a bunch of un-necessary brackets and bolts out. Replaced the battery with an Odyssey High Performance battery, and a Odyssey Billet Aluminum Battery Tray. For a cleaner look, I am transverse-mounting the battery, as opposed to the stock horizontal positioning. All of the bolts in the engine bay are being replaced with Stainless Steel hardware & Billet Aluminum fender washers.

My friend is a Lizard Skin distributor, you should look into it. That stuff is amazing. We sprayed it on his 09 gtr, and it quite it down hella inside. and all you do is spray it underside. it even cuts down on temp amazingly. You should see the demonstration on a skillet with two ice cubes, one side is sprayed, and the other not. It will evap the cube in seconds while the sprayed side doesn't get affected

I have a similar product from Second Skin who just sponsored me last week for this build. I already have a few gallons of the stuff. That will be going down shortly!

tword. alacantra is a brand name for micro fiber. what makes it better than other micro fibers is it's uv resistance, which makes it suitable for automotive use.

The engine given it's age, is actually pretty clean inside. Most of the gaskets were still good when I pulled it, but those will all be replaced for the re-build.

the H23 is nearly all the way down!

Pulled the head, removed the retainers/keepers, valve springs & valves. Just need to remove the rocker arm assembly. Headgasket was still in good shape, no missing material or gaps.
The block still needs to be disassembled....ugh! Engine builds are definitely time consuming.

Any updates with the engine build?

The head is at the machine shop getting a clean, port & polish, and cut the valve seats.  
I received some flat valves from Supertech, along with viton valve seals. Still waiting on the dual valve springs & cams. Valve cover is out to the powdercoater getting a custom finish...I've got a 10lb box full of OEM parts to rebuild this engine when I get around to it...LOL. That's about it.

WOW, i love the van. everytime i come across an odyssey in CL i consider in getting one because of this odyssey. BIG props for doing all this on a vehicle that most people wont consider nor would want to invest in

Love this van!

Flipped the motor and pulled the oil pump, oil bridge etc. to add on the KS Tuned balance shaft eliminator kit. The kit fits really well and looks awesome.


I also replaced all of the oil pump seals, crank seal, and waterpump.

Had some issues getting the AEM Fuel Rail to fit this JDM intake manifold but we eventually solved the issue. Not too many JDM H23As running an AEM Rail that I could find online...
Installed the AEM Adjustable Regulator, and added a B&M Pressure Gauge so we can tune it when its running. For kicks, we're also doing the allen bolts on the manifold plenum, thermal intake manifold gasket, thermal throttle body gasket + port-matching the plenum to 70mm for the Skunk2 Alpha throttle body (and allen bolts for that as well...) These small details should provide a nice 10-12WHP bump over stock... :)

Wow!  Motor swap too?  Van is awesome.  Saw it at Wekfest and always had people surrounding it.

With the help of a few friends, we pulled the motor out in a quick 2.5 hours, and started planning out the wire tuck & shave.


We had a bit of time today to start pulling the wire harnesses, mapping out which ones to extend / re-route, and brackets we'll have to fab. Once all the wiring is done, I can weld up all the extra holes and prep it for repaint.


Quite possibly the first Odyssey with a wire tucked/shaved engine bay?

I feel for ya man,  I am finishing up a bay on a MK3 VW GTI.   not fun but end result is worth the time !!

I need to figure out how to get some custom a/c lines made for this beast so I can tuck that as well...I've had them made before in the past but this system is a bit tricker than most.

On my shaved bay MK2 I had rubber lines made the length i needed with 90s on the ends.  I ran straight down firewall from expansion valve use clamps and had them mounted under frame rail, followed to the lower front cross member then over to the ac compressor.  You only really saw the 6ins that ran down the fire wall.   I am not exactly sure how you bay is setup and where your compressor is but that is an option if the compressor is close to the front lower cross member.....

Wire Tuck & Shave Odyssey after day 5, about 70 hours into it...Now we're at the filling stage and only the best EverCoat!

Stay tuned, gets paint tomorrow!

Paint is on! Once its cure I can get it wetsanded & polished...
All in all, about 100 +/- holes were deleted, all seams were welded + smoothed out for a clean look.

It may not appear like it, but theres at least 130 hours into this wire tuck and shave, and its still not finished.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been swamped at the shop and no time for finishing the odyssey...BUT, things are clearing up and I'm getting back into finishing this thing off right!

Way too much details to list, but the completed tasks so far:
- received custom wire-tuck harness (blacked out)
- modified ARC Intake chamber for Odyssey fitment
- made some custom billet brackets, and hole plugs for the engine bay
- upgraded to PLM Tri-Y race header
- switched out all bolts in the bay to purple (new color change)
- polish everything that isn't painted or powdercoated 
- switch out all hoses, couplers, vac lines to special order samco purple ones

Today, had time to mount a new A/C condenser, Drier, and the Aluminum Trans Cooler... I plan on making custom A/C lines so I can hide/tuck them away cleanly. The trans cooler will greatly compliment my ARC intake setup for this project :)
