Too old for modding??

Just a thought but how many of you guys will continue
modding cars as you grow older? I mean lately I been getting comments like "that's so 10 years ago" , that's not a honda, your 28 not 20, your getting old etc etc. Really they can all kiss my ass but it kinda made me think will I'll be 40 rolling around in my  VIP Lexus with funky paint ?? Lol 

I mean hopefully by then i have better toys to play with. But still...  What are y'all thoughts on this?

I get it a bit (i'm 30), but then i get way more telling me i have a hot car. At the end of the day the only one i am trying to impress is myself though, so i dont let a few haters get me down.
 
I do wonder what i'll be driving in 10 years. But i see nothing wrong with older people driving hot cars. How proud would your kids be to be dropped off in a vip car?

I'm 35 and I'll continue modding along as I have money to mod. The older guys usually have the nicer cars.

I use too think when you hit a certain age theres no point then you see older people with classics or even subtle modded cars and think thank god theres something too do when you get old besides stare at your wife and kids lol

I have had the thought but never the comments made to me. Honda/Nissan/VW tuning scene is inundated with the younger generation. I guess that was one reason why I felt out of place driving a 240 to a meet and everyone was like half my age. 

Location plays a part too. In many other countries younger kids have no interest in modding cars and have other hobbies where in the US as a young male it a major status boost to have a car let alone a fast one.

If I wasn't in the US I would probably continue to be interested i both Drifiting and VIP as hobbies. But being here with a family I am happier owning large sedan over a cramped hatchback.

Its a hobby.  Why not?  The joy comes from the actual hard work the goes into modding and not the actual car itself.

I plan on modding til I can't drive anymore. I get comments everynow and then from older and younger people asking why or when I'll grow out of it and I don't have an answer other than I do it cuz I enjoy it and don't really care what others think. But it does feel good when people younger or older look at my car and say it looks nice or just admire it in some way. So I don't know if I'll ever grow out of it but I hope not I don't think there's an age cut off but more just a personal line and ince you lose the passion you just step out on your own accord.

the more money i make, the less ill need to mod my cars to make them look how i like.  but i cant see myself ever not at least touching the suspension of a vehicle.

There's no age limit to modding cars and anyone who says so is A: an idiot, and B: not into cars other than for mere transportation.  

I turned 40 last month, I get compliments all the time on my ride, not once has someone said "aren't you too old...."  screw that, I'd tell 'em to fck off if they did.

I get heat all the time from my family and GF that I'm too old to mod cars. Honestly, if it makes you happy then so be it. 

It's not all about new modded cars for me either. I also want a plain stock 1985 450SL. I'd kill for a '55 SL, but I don't have a million on hand :)

Yup, modding will never end. There may be phases, peoples styles or tastes change in time, but there'll always be a car I'll want to call my own. Something I've built with, can call my own, and am content with. I don't like sayin it, but building cars is really just a hobby. Its somethin to do when you're bored and ya gotta keep busy, or somethin to do that we enjoy doin. And since I enjoy it, I know I'll be in it for the long run. 
If ya think about it, old people love their fixed up rides. They're always at shows with their classics showin em off. And they take pride in their work. And you never hear about people telling them "Your too old to be wrenchin on cars" in fact they get props for doin so

even if its in funky color cars. I dont do it for the haters, girls or fanboys but for myself.

Fuck that. I'll play with cars till I die. I'm really excited for when I can bring my son to car shows and the track.
I guess the people that ask if you'll ever grow out of it haven't seen the Concours D'Elegance in Pebble Beach. Those guys are older than dirt and still play with cars.

My Mom is 63 and she has modded every vehicle she's had. She is currently modding an H3. (yes thats right, an H3)
 
As for myself I'm 35 and will continue to mod my vehicles.

like an addiction once you start you cant stop, i started few yrs back and i cant wait to see what the nxt car will be(supra id like it to be ahah) but iv been to many events were theirs guys in their 40s still haveing fun with cars, theirs never an age limit with anything motorsports wise i say

Im 27 and im addicted to modding cars, the longest ive driven a stock car for is 2weeks tops until the modding begins =) most timez i'll buy parts before i even get the actual car lol

im 20 and already parted out my car, not cause im getting old but im young and dont make enough money hahaha to be modding a car right now. but once i get a better job ill start modding again.

that's a good question, never really thought about it...I'm 26 going on 34...I have 2 daughters and a fiance so life is already hectic...i'm just fortunate enough to work on cars for a living...All i know is, my girls will be rollin' hard in high school...and that means i'll always have something new in the garage...

theres a car show near my house every friday, those geezers are old and they have the sickest rides, its not even a hobby for em its their life.

I think anyone over 20 is too old to drive a RICED up car. Euro and vip is something different: You could it do until you're 50 (toned down of course) because it embraces style and class. not tacky wings and 500,000 stickers.My dad and my girl have always criticised my modding but when in a social situation talking to other people ,they have always complimented them. I did throw away the idea of cars a few years ago because I thought I was too old. I purchased a LR Discovery and swore I wouldn't touch it! 1year and $15000 (5g of which was repairs) later ,I sold.The best thing that ever happened to me was selling that Piece of Ill manufactured,Shit.:pat: So I guess what I'm trying to say is it doesn't matter what you drive.....if you truly have the modification "bug" it stays with you for life. I saw it written saw somewhere 'modification,is to take a good idea and make it better' (or something to that effect) The real problem I see lately is to know when to say 'when'. I see so many kid's and even adults modding cars they don't even close to own!!! They finance everything to look like "PLAYERZ"! and live their dream, but still live at home with mom and can't even afford to change the fucking oil !!!

yea stock vehicles just dont cut it for me... it starts as little preference changes and upgrades, and just gets out of control....  But with age the cars get better, and the mods get tasteful..

ive had three cars all which have been modded i just dont think i could ever drive a stock car no matter how old i am even if im so old im crusing in a hoverround or rascal that will probly be modded too haha. dont worry about the haters.

Time is relative, much like the older guys ( our fathers and grandfathers) who were into muscle, classics or restoration and go to those weekend local car shows in just about every city. They love those cars and even though some may respect the progression of automobiles they prefer the nostalgia of their time. Modding cars isnt just about what you do to a car, it can also be about whats happening around you when you do it. I for one, am enjoying aspects of progression however feel a comfort zone within the past 20 years of design which will date me in terms of our youth. As metioned earlier, I cant imagine not touching suspension even if I get a new car...I would imagine that I will turn out a be collector (if applicable) and on occasion be seen in older rides.."If they say arnt you too old for that?" my resonse would be, "Eat a dick, and stop worrying about what others do."   :)

im turning 21 in 2 weeks and i dont think i'll stop unless i get bored of it.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I'm 28 yeas old and got my driver's license at age 18. First car was modded also.

I got my lincense @15 1/2.
but been driving since like when i was 5years old lol sittin on my dads lap ofcourse.
 
yea car is something that i could never get out off. 
even if i settle down and have kids. hopefully the wife can understand.

I know I'm not going to stop. Im 30 and have modded every car that I have ever owned. But like someone else said the older I get the better the car is and less mods you need to make the car look good.

No matter what every car needs droped at least a little bit.

I used to think that way...but now its like.."what do you do? hunt, fish...ect" Well I roll hard baby...but they just dont get it, like we dont get their's.

i got alot of grief from my old man when i got my sentia. rah rah rah dont do anything to it, its a beautiful car rah rah rah...well ofcourse i didnt listen to him, but now he compliments it every time he sees it.
all i do is just do subtle mods and make sure they compliment the car.
i do get alot of positive compliments from old and young, get thumbs up and even cops dont hassle me, and they know im under legal lowering limit:)
every day i keep think of lowering my car even more, but at the same time i look at it and say meh, it looks already good enough... cant make my mind up:)

my wife hates me and my car, but oh well...and im not allowed to mod a car that ou baby will be in:)but i have already an evil plan:)

long as the money aint tight... got the benz and 240 to play with... also got the sequiao for comfortable long drives.

As Widebody_Q has mentioned: It's a hobby, if not a passion.  I'm not into performance as I once was due in part of the high maintenance required, but I still appreciate it.  

I, personally, don't find it bad when someone who's older than me is into modifying cars.  I actually think it's cool.  People who insult others because they claim they're too old to be doing it is ignorant.  Then again, everyone, to a certain degree, is ignorant, but in the previous sentence, it's a bad type of ignorance being exerted.

...as someone put it earlier on in this thred (very well said too might I add) Eat a dick. I don't sweat these bandwagon riding busters for riding a trend for wearing a pink shirt, or whatever else seems to be the hot topic so please, unless you're in a Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley, Maybach or Rolls or something of the sort (which by the way is still in need of a few tweeks here and there) don't speak on it. Better yet, speak on it, cause I'll more than likely just laugh at you. So no, stock for me has not ever, is not and as far as I can see will not be the way for someone like me to roll.

moding cars is personal thing, no matter if you're changing your tail lights to doing a full re-build.  for me i'll be doing this for the rest of my life!

I just turned 32 and I just put on my AMG pedals on my S class myself last night in 95F temp and 90% humidity.... so there.

One of two things happen as you get older:

1) You get married and have kids. The wife puts the brakes on car expenditures unless SHE wants a new SUV. No money for boy toys. Basically, you are fucked.

2) You stay single, live the Christian Troy lifestyle, banging hot chicks: you answer to no one and you make enough money to have cool toys and a sweet pad.


I have an NSX, turbocharged MR2, AE86, '08 Odyssey (for the business), GS400, '50 Ford (all modified), house with a view of the ocean, and a 38' sailboat....

Which category do you suppose I fit into? :)

You must have smelled terrific after that ordeal. I tried working on cars in humid weather not fun. (No homo) But I even shock myself at how bad I smell after working on a car. :pat:

I don't see it stopping on my end either.  I just turned 30.  My only non-modded car is my piece of crap daily driver 91 civic.  My GS is modded and my other car is turbo integra with a full weld in cage.

I think this is the biggest thing...its seen as more "younger" thing in tiny, loud, 240s, civics, VW. But nice big cushy leather and actual leg room, and gasp, A BACK SEAT really plays to the older, more "grown up" crowd. Not to mention job and career paths.
