VSC please help me with my VIP style build

Some of you guys know me from CL as Automan but I am here to learn as much as I can as I go in a new direction with my car. I was going to post up AFTER my build was complete to see what you guys thought. But that does not make any sense because at that point it would be too late to make changes or avoid mistakes. So as the car prepares to go into the shop within a few weeks I think now is the time to get expert opinions.

The car was is a show car which is the reason why I went so radical before with the marble paint and lambo style doors. But it worked, the car got a lot of attention, won me a room full of trophies and was even in a magazine and on TV a few times. But the VIP look is so perfect for the GS and I did not know much about building a car when I first started. So its time for a transformation.

I have been stocking up some parts for the build so first some pics of the car as it sits and then I will talk about what I have in mind.

Ok I know the roar will go up to remove the lambo doors and that is the plan at this point. So other than the lambo doors what else jumps out at you? What do you think of those wheels?

Ok now for the goodies that I have been stock piling.

Since the car is supercharged I got the Neo to help with engine management. My question is for a VIP style car should this be displayed or should it be hidden somewhere? Also what about my gauges? Right now they are in a custom pod on my A-Pillar.

Dakota Digital DHC2000 Air Ride Management - A few of my friends have the Dakota Digital setup and its awesome so I think this was a good addition. I am also revamping my audio/video system with some Diesel Audio equipment. And I picked up a Vertex shift knob to replace my worn one.

Vertex and Silk Blaze - For the body kit I chose a Vertex. I have done many searches on the Vertex here and on CL and I fully understand that the Vertex kit is a drift kit and will not be considered a VIP style kit. However after seeing some of the builds that have featured the Vertex kit I think it achieves the look I am shooting for. I also ordered a Silk Blaze roof spoiler from Japan. The paint scheme will be a blue likely the color of the bottom part of my car now.

new wheels...too much bling for me...definitely radius the 1/4...some red/clear tails...JP grill...

you just kinda have to go with it and see how everything looks...hard to tell without seeing the kit on the car...

i wouldnt radius unless you have something alot more aggressive than whats on now.

it sounds like you already have your goal set. which im gonna go out on a limb here and say its not gonna be a vip style build but i would def like to see some new more aggressive wheels and a monotone paint. come back in here after your car is painted with the new kit and see what we have to say. do some reading and some research and get you some more ideas.

The old look that you are trying to get rid of would get some attention in the VIP scene in Japan but not so much love here. It is modern with the vents, paint color etc. Just the execution is off compared to some of their stuff.

The two tone paint looks nice, just the design that seperates the top from the bottom takes away from the VIP look IMO and puts it in the dub category. You are on the right track and you clearly show us that your not afraid to spend so you got an advantage over most lol

I would definately agree with the need for some new wheels and make sure you get waaaay more dish in the front and some more in the back since it sure looks like you have the room.

Personally, I think the paint is something that is going to take away from the VIP look. If you look through the threads on here at some of the other builds you'll see that a lot of the cars have very simple paint jobs/kits/exterior accessories and mainly use wheel design/fitment/tire stretch as the focal point of their build. It also seems to be very acceptable to go all out on the interior, just dont add too much colour. I think if you repainted it a nice simple one-tone colour (like the bottom blue) it would go a long way to getting you away from the Drift/Tuner look and into the VIP style.

Just my opinion anyway. Any pics of the interior as it is set-up now?

The current wheels are 20x8.5 front and 20x11 rear. I should have gotten a bigger lip on the front but oh well you live and you learn. They are brand new so I may not replace them for a little while but who knows. As far as the paint goes I am going with a solid paint job this time around so the current paint scheme is not an issue.

I'm pretty sure your car will come out nice since you got the dough... I say get some new wheels before you go paint so that you won't mess up your paint later on when you roll your fenders for the new rims!!

It looks cool but clearly everything is done for wow factor and not lux and elegance that a lot viper's would regard as a fundamental aspect of the style. If I was you and money was not an object I'd paint it a single black, silver, gold, white,or a maroon/rootbeer colour....
The paint you have IMO is influenced more by the custom minitruck and dub scenes. What do you plan for wheels etc?

you could try suicide doors? RR phantom style? IMO gauges are a bit tacky and pretentious... If you're fast - you're fast. I don't think you need visual gadgets/aids to tell people that.

Ok here is what I am confused by. Maybe it will get me flamed and thrown off of VSC or maybe it will be educational or turn into a nice discussion. Here it goes. I have seen some posts that say there is not such thing as a VIP kit or a VIP wheel, VIP is all about platform, fitment, stance etc. Then in the very next post someone will say well this can not be considered VIP or that can not be considered VIP.

Ok for example I know that I am probably going to take my lambo doors off but lets take lambo doors as an example. The first thing people would say on CL and maybe even on here is you MUST get rid of the lambo doors or you can not be considered VIP. Lambo doors are DUB style or just plain lame and played out. Ok is this not a VIP car with not one set but two sets of lambo doors? Would anyone say that this car is not VIP? If so why?

Styling and color - I have had many remarks on my paint job and it just so happens that I plan to go with a solid paint job but for the sake or argument lets talk about paint. One of the members on my post remarked that I would get some love in Japan because of my paint scheme but not so much here in the U.S. I did not know that there was a U.S. VIP scene I thought that the entire idea of VIP styling was to emulate the styling that is done in Japan. They seem to have no problem with various paint colors or schemes in VIP so why do we? I have seen baby blue VIP cars and all other colors that no one had a problem with. So what is the deal with paint. I love the rootbeer by the way a few members have really done that well but up until I saw those I never heard of anyone saying that rootbeer was a VIP color.

Wheels - I think this is where I am having my biggest problem. I see a ton of VIP cars with chrome wheels. Why is everyone saying that the wheels I have on my car now do not fit VIP? Is it the style or the size? I tell you what I don't think I can fit a wider wheel on my car without tearing it up. The 20x11 rear tuck so tight when it is slammed that two pieces of paper could not fit between the fender and the wheel. I agree that more lip on the front would have been ideal and I may make a change to get the look that I want but I need to understand what exactly makes the VIP look work as far as wheel fitment goes. And yes I have read many many posts about it already but maybe if I can apply it to something that I am somewhat familiar with like my wheels it will make more sense.

Sorry to see this so late ... .

Well What color over all choice are you choosing ? one color or leaving the same.. Most members in the scene havent went wild with the Vip scene but hawaii has some that chose wild colors. (one color)

as far as having a certain look I would say it really about execution, what other wheels do you have in mind. and or get spacers to flush them out and we will get a great idea of what you are putting together.

Hey James I am going to go with a solid blue probably like the bottom part of my car.

What size spacers would you recommend? Crap I don't have a pic with it raised with the new wheels on there. I will work on that.

Rule no#1 build your car to make your self happy not other people on any fourm ..at the end of the day you are the one that is flipping the 10 to 15 k for this build .. keep it simple keep it clean .. and loose the WINGS ...

look around and pick cars from the fourm that you like , use photo shop to mix and match the paint, rims and what ever else you are planning to add.once you are happy build the car to that spec ..

i find that the best looking cars are the ones that are simple ....

I think if u closed up all the vents in your front lip, it'll look hella cleaner. As for classification, I think it's neo-VIP. I am by no way certified to say what's what, the goal is to build a car and walk out of it n be like "dayam that shit is gangsta!!" haha. All in all, I like the car, just not a fan of blue.

I am by no way certified to say what's what, the goal is to build a car and walk out of it n be like "dayam that shit is gangsta!!" haha. All in all, I like the car, just not a fan of blue.
Thanks man the front lip is soon to be replaced. Vertex kit going on soon.

Don't go getting too offended. I'm sure The criticism is not of your car as a show car.
It is more a commentary on what is required to get it to VIP status.
Personally the colour is quite striking and nice (a little over the top for me but I can be a conservative and boring kind of guy.) I'm sure it is even a really good job.

Heres my take on it- Because VIP is not a thing where you really need to accessorize it up to the bream it can be hard for people to know when to say when.
No amount of JDM stickers on the doors, anodized blow off valves and waste gates ,chameleon paint ,28" rims and racing seats will make a vehicle more VIP.
That, in my opinion is where the mistake is made. The car really rests it's main impression on it's wheels stance and fitment. It is probably the most fundamental "rule", Everything else is just gravy. If you get the wheels "wrong" (even though it doesn't sit right with me to call it "wrong") you can confuse the look you are setting out to achieve. It's really something you cant change or negotiate on . Remember that vip is supposed to be an exclusive, luxury even, 'gangster' look, so racey wheels and stuff just don't fit in, just like heavy chrome full faced wheels and silly camber don't fit into a rice look.
I don't write the rules. :thelaw:
Ps,I think the lambo's are just played out regardless of their cred in the scene.
Don't let all my or anyone elses ramblings sway you if you've got something in mind but I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain any misconceptions without trying to hurt anyones feelings.

Thanks man I am not offended at all by the comments. I just want to try to understand a little more about the VIP scene and what direction I need to take my current build in order to fit in. The car will always be a show car therefore it will always have say an over the top audio system and things like that. But my goal is to clean it up and get more of the classy luxury and less of the tuner look out of it. Thank you all for the comments thus far.

as far as the interior goes, its a good start, but it needs some more luxury flash. if that makes sense....youve got a great start all around. but like i said before, get rid of the doors and u are pretty well on your way to changing in the right direction.

Yeah by that I am assuming that you mean curtains, head rests, pillows and other stuff I have seen in VIP cars?

Pillows and tables always seem to set it off but they're the cherry on top of the proverbial cake.
Oh and..
If I were still into loud stereos and tech like you seem to be I'd keep it how it is but probably paint the bright blue panels black...cut down on gauges or maybe blending them in with leather trim over the top and I guess woodgrain somewhere couldn't hurt if you go that with the tables.. Look at bentley's etc they do the sport/luxury thing pretty nice. I don't know what it is but I would love to see where this one goes.......good luck.

as for wheels: Not many people seem to run these http://www.fabulous.co.jp/products/wheel/profound/index.asp

not just, i was going with more woodgrain and less painted interior. maybe some nice new seat covers (see the interior sub-forum and some of the interior threads).

just a little bit extra to set you apart. what you have isnt bad, its just not "VIP" if u wanna categorize it.

lol don't let any of these guys tell you what to do. In my opinion, your car is already V.i.P. Status.

Do what you like, is the most important part here. If you went to japan they have wilder cars and people seem to accept it but I don't know why some people here don't classify your car as V.I.P. I'm sorry but wheels and stance alone aren't V.I.P.

The only thing that is extreme is the lambo doors, but they are nicely done. The front lips, sideskirts could do without much vents. Remember V.I.P. isn't all about retarded cambers and such. For me I wouldn't like my wheel slanted, to me I think it's rediculous. Just flush is fine.

To the guy that said you don't need a boost gauge? If you've ever owned a turbocharged vehicle a boost gauge is a must. Also. wide-band, and oil temp is a must. It's just the pillar could be cleaner without the blue.

Your rims are already good, don't need to do anything with it. I think it's just the stance could be more aggressive but what it is now is fine. My homeboy bought wald rims and now he regrets it because it looks plain and ugly. Name brands don't mean jack . It's all about flavor. Now he wants one with a polished lip and some more chrome to it. To me at night, the chrome parts really sets off a luxury car. I love it. I am looking to get the 20' fabulous profound rims. You can check it out at their website if you just want new rims. Good luck man.

Yeah okay and just because I'm not a mod or has 1000+ post don't mean I am new to this scene/culture. This is my opinion and my observation from a Japanese point of view. What is V.I.P. to you may I ask? And before people go forum jumping me, read what I said.

Nothing on it was offensive or whatsoever. I complimented on his car because I already see his car as V.I.P style. Maybe not the aero-kits, and interior paints but that's what he wants. So I told him to do what he wants not what these forums folks wants.

This is the thing about forums I dislike, people jumping to conclusions. I've had my share of bans for being argumentive with the mods/users but I don't mind because I don't break rules, well not often.

To really know what VIP I suggest you first live in Japan, and study/ask them about what this culture truly means.

People said his car was too flashy, IMHO it's just a little sporty with the kit. Looks VIP to me. A VIP car does not have to be a certain color.

And also too much gauges? Serious? Read turbo-charging 101. You need gauges!!!!!

Elite - What you don't need is for a VIP car is 100+wood-grain parts ,brand name rims that looks cheap, crazy over sized muffler tips that don't add to performance of any sorts, fusa knots, cup holders+tables that weren't meant for your car, diamond valve caps, headrest,"vip car cologne, junction produce shift knob, slanted rims, +etc..

In the end do what you want and make sure in the end everything must flow right. Don't believe what some people here tell you, they think VIP is all about wheels+fitment. It's not true.

you need to read the title to this thread, it says HELP me with my VIP style build. his new bumper, is not vip style, his wheels, are not vip style, his car is for one not vip styled in the least. because its on air with big wheels does not make it VIP. you really need to do some more research before you start spewing misinformation. true vip style is more elitest than you might want to think. cheap parts get you no where.

you wont get a ban here for having spirited discussions, but misinformation will probably not be tolerated for long. read some of the threads in vip 101. just because you THINK you are right in what you are saying doesnt mean you are. there is stying a luxury vehicle, and then there is vip styling. just because he owns a luxury vehicle and mods it does not make it vip.

Dang Airmax are my new parts considered to be cheap?

Body Kit = 2000+
Wheels = 4000+
Roof Spoiler = $400

That is just some of the new stuff. I know you can definitely spend a lot more on different parts if you want to but is the stuff that I bought consider cheap or low quality?

Man I was in the shower thinking to myself that I needed to come down and edit my post so that it would not sound like I was offended or upset. As I said before I am new to this style and I am here to learn from those who already have the knowledge and experience. I was just thinking that if these parts are considered cheap then I need to get out of this game now... =)

I truly appreciate all of the comments that have been made about my build. Heck it hasn't even started yet and I am already learning so much.
u know, i had a feeling that was going to be taken the wrong. i wasnt saying ur parts are / were cheap, i was just letting him know that just because the wheels fit well or look nice doesnt make the vip. i like the vertex kit personally, i dont dislike ur wheels, i just think the style is not vip. like i said before, u have a good start, your parts are just not vip parts. i hope i didnt offend you, that certainly was not my intention.

Speaking of I talked to the shop today and the start has been pushed back another week so next week it should start happening and I can get some updated pics and progress reports.

you wont get a ban here for having spirited discussions, but misinformation will probably not be tolerated for long. read some of the threads in vip 101. just because you THINK you are right in what you are saying doesnt mean you are. there is stying a luxury vehicle, and then there is vip styling. just because he owns a luxury vehicle and mods it does not make it vip.

The only thing that's doesn't fit right is his kit. It's a little sporty, but his car is VIP. His rims are decent accept one looks bigger than the other lol The back rims are nice. Wassup with the front?

So what is a VIP rim? LOL Go ask a guy in Japan what a VIP style rim is, he'll say you can use any "nice" rim. Doesn't have to be name brand. Just because it's not expensive doesn't mean it's cheap or a knockoff. Not everyone has money to buy Wald,JP, or Fabulous rims.

Well if you're going to consider me spewing misinformation then that means you're are doing it as well. In this game they are no rules or elitist you speak off. It's a misconception in America to think everyone in Japan is an elitist when it comes to this styling. They buy the best product because it is readily available to them. They aren't cocky like Americans. They are hard working people unlike Americans always wanting to stunt. ""Balllerrrrr!!!!!" Status!!!!!!!!! In Japan it's not like that. People are polite and moderate.

I THINK I am right because guess what? I have lived in Japan during my deployment. Not to disrespect you or anything. I laugh @ the VIP 101.
--------- This is what VIP truly means--------

VIP styling is a style of vehicle modification. The term "V.I.P." originated in Japan to describe the modification of certain luxury car models, such as the Toyota Aristo and Nissan President, to give them a more distinctive look. While only modified versions of these specific high-end cars can technically be called VIP cars, you can apply VIP style to just about any car.

But his car is not just any luxury car, it's a high end Japanese car. A Toyota at that. Therefore it is allowed to be called VIP.

In VIP culture there is no right or wrong when it comes to styling. The true VIP are cars that were made fit to have that name in the first place. That is VIP.

Lets not turn this into a shit flinging contest.

The GS -IS- nice ---- The GS is -NOT- (Currently) VIP

YES, You could argue it has some VIP styling cues I guess if you look hard enough but the car just screams American HIN/DUB style.
Do a search "VIP" and time and time again it talks about the definitions. Even on the Australian AUSVIP and Malaysian Diamond Zeus forums it discusses=
LOW-WIDE RIMS AND BODY-LUXURY INSIDE AND OUT-LOW-OFFSETS-FLUSH FITMENT(FLUSH WITH FENDERS AT LEAST!!)STRETCHED TIRES -AND NO! EVEN NOT FOCUSED ON PERFORMACE! SHIT!! EVEN THE MOST COMMON COLOURS ARE MENTIONED SEVERAL HUNDRED TIMES!

FYI The 2 examples of cars you show actually run junction produce newscaras (not coincidentally a JAPANESE branded rim!) And run Junction produce body kits!

We do not go by everything the japanese do imo, we try to take the bits we like from different eras of the style and create something of our own. Sure some will decide to just deck out a car from a catalog, but its their decision and we still respect them just as much as the next guy. Not a single person in this thread besides you has laid down the law on what elite needs to do to his gs, we all try to offer opinions and alittle guidance, at the end of the day its still his and he damn well better be happy with it.

Itachi, this is a warning, if you continue to choose to make your points by insulting others and their ideals you will be banned from this thread specifically, not the whole forum, but you will never be allowed to post in this thread again and you will not get the chance to share your opinion. i made a long response to your post and because im at work and it took me too long to finish it and respond it deleted itself.

basically, just because you lived in japan doesnt make you king dingaling vip. there are rules and guidelines to building a vip car, just because you dont think so, doesnt make it so.

the fact that those cars you posted have no negative camber, means nothing. the fact that you think the black one is sporty, means nothing. i dont think junction has ever been considered sporty.

lol @ what is a vip rim...what is a dub rim? certain things follow a path...

lol Sorry man if it didn't sound right but we are discussing on the internet it just makes it seem that way but it was not intended. I am no king of nothing. Yes they are rules to VIP. For me, I see it as a VIP car because he uses a VIP platform. lol I don't know what a dub rim brand is but I do know what people use when they want the best wheels for their cars when styling VIP. =) Just wondering ,the black JP car doesn't look sporty to you a bit? For me the spoiler, rims and exhaust tip screams sporty but it's okay because it is using a VIP platform car as I can see.

^^ whoa whoa Caps lock :pat: I already understand what a VIP car is lol The main point of modding a VIP car IS the about the wheels+stance+fitment+FLUSH+insane camber but it also has other bits and parts also that needs to compliment the whole package.

For now guys, I'll agree to disagree with some stuff but I do agree on certain things about his GS. But his GS/Aristo is and will always be a VIP platform car going by traditional history so in the end, I think it's considered VIP even though the modding is a bit different.

we are all adults here. we can all disagree and still get along in the end. i wont stray too far from my points though. this car imo is still not vip.

and from what i had learned, the aristo was not a vip platform from the start, but more recently it has been accepted as one.

ElitedrivenGS, based on your attention to detail with your current car, I have no doubt that you'll build a sick VIP car once you've done the knowledge on the culture.

However, the rest of the discussion in this thread reminds me of why I just want to build a clean car and not have any titles attached to it. I love VIP cars and VSC but in the end, I just want to be satisfied with my own car (with VIP styling cues). The passion that the OGs have on here is completely understandable. I remember wanting to protect the Honda JDM scene the same way back in the late 90's. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want to play, follow the rules. When rules are loosely interpreted and the game becomes saturated with these interpretations, the scene dies (look at what Password JDM did to the Honda JDM scene).

Ok, back to my usual lurking.

If it was ,I'd probably just buy some curtains and a fusa and call it a day! It'd be a Damn sight cheaper and a lot more comfortable:runcoold: LOL.

Car is in the shop about to start the paint and body process so i should have some pics to share real soon. Decided to sell my current wheels and get something more VIP approved. I know exactly what I want to get so hopefully that will work out and look good with my other planned mods. I am getting excited about this now.

The car is still not in the paint booth but it should be soon. In the meantime I have made a few new purchases.
LED Replacement Turn signal mirrors
Blue HID fogs

Also I sold my other wheels and have purchased a new set. Consider this a wheel teaser. =)

I think I may be able to help you get at least a feel for VIP style, at least from my theoretical understanding.

I have spent years on the forums, and years trying to read VIP Car magazine. The reason that it is so hard to quantify the style, is that it as a style is dynamic in Japan, not static.

It does however have core principals, that if followed can lead a care the continuity of style, worthy of being called a VIP car.

1. VIP Platform (in flux)
2. Stance and Fitment
3. Flowing detail oriented execution- having a cohesive plan of modification that highlights a design theme.
4. Parts from VIP manufacturers helps, but is not mandatory. However there are unifying design aesthetics among the products of VIP companies that can help create a cohesive look.

Widebody Q is correct, in Japan a VIP car can run the gamut from wild, to clean. Many in the U.S. were introduced to VIP when clean was the in style at the time. So it is not the extreme show style mods you once had, but the execution that was not VIP. A VIP car is in the details, once the core principals have been met.

I could illustrate this with pics, but I suggest you go to luxury j cars follow the link and look at vip cars at shows in Japan for a visual representation of what I am saying.

http://www.luxuryjcars.com/forums/index.php?showforum=38

I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to seeing your finished car. And also one day finishing my car lol

That is the House of Kolors Candy Cobalt Blue but it probably will not look that dark over a silver base coat. It should look a lot like what I have on the bottom of my car now.

Been awhile since I updated this so here we go. Car is ready for paint we are just waiting for the new wheels to arrive so the fender mods can be done. The wheels will arrive next wednesday and then things kick into high gear. I went to take the doors handles and some other parts out yesterday and this is what the car currently looks like.

Based on the pics do you think I can add some negative camber and tuck the wheel or should I have them build a fender flare? They are talking fender flare but adding camber was also suggested by someone.

Well I was going to do the rebuild anyway and so the money was going to be spent. I appreciate all of the comments and advice that I have been given. In the end the car will still look the way I want it to.

I would go with camber for now. It's easier to lessen the camber and flare it out later if you really don't like it. Doesn't look like you're going to need broken arm camber anyways.
Vishunu's are my fav wheel of all time and I looooove me some chrome.

Chrome is VIP, Lambo Doors are VIP, Body Kits are VIP.......ETC ETC ETC.....

POOR execution is NOT VIP!

All of those things can be done and be sweet, the problem is most of those things are what are found on poorly executed cars or rides that, here in the US, we consider ricey or hood etc. Do it right and the closed minded followers will still hate because they are afraid to do what others don't flat out accept, but those that get it and love it will always give you respect for the work.

overall a good turnout for the work so far. and i agree with dirtyatl. please smooth out the fenders and make the wheels fit inside as if it looks factory. fender "flares" is more of a dub or rice look to me IMO. camber is all i noticed you need too. adjust the factory camber and air ur car down all the way.... measure the fenders accordingly and smoothen them out to a OEM look, you'll be golden. cant wait to see your outcome.
