Engine Temperature gauge help

I have a 1995 LS400, i was driving and all of a sudden i hit a dip in the road which caused the engine temperature gauge to shoot straight down and not move.  nothing changed in how it drived. i'm not exactly sure how to fix it or how i should approach this problem, help would be greatly appreciated.
