stripping powder coat?

any suggestions? tried aircraft stripper but it didnt work well. blasting was pricey tho.... i would like to do it myself.

Aircraft stripper is the only thing that works for me. I tried "gasket remover" and all that jazz.
aircraft stripper works. just apply it in thick layers and let it sit for 10-15 mins. then rub/scrape it off.

i had to do this to 4 wheels and it was something i will try to avoid doing again. it burns when it touches your skin. I wore 2 layers of gloves and it still goes through.
i recommend using dishwashing gloves. 2 or 3 layers!

there's stripper made specifically for pc or the other option is sandblasting.

this is the one i've seen recommended on the consumer level, not sure about industrial.

best bet would probably be to just get it blasted.

depends on you goal... if you need a smooth surface for something like polishing blasting adds a LOT of work.

heavy duty oven cleaner will pretty much go through anything, including your skin, so make sure to wear gloves. You can pick it up at your local supermarket.

Go to walmart get a can of oven cleaner the yellow one not the blue one.That will do the trick.

are oem wheels painted or powder coated cause im having the same problem! not sure what bmw uses but i stripped off the clearcoat on my 7451 wheels and now i cant get anything else off. is ovan cleaner safe on aluminum?

oven cleaner can eat at aluminum if you're not careful. just keep an eye on it and you should be ok.

it wont damage the powdercoated diamond cut (oe-River Side finish) on the wheels? O.o

that's clear coat not powdercoat. paint stripper will lift it and have less risk to the metal but you will lose the finish unless you find someone who can recreate it (which i've heard is possible but never seen done correctly).

Diamond cut is not powdercoated. The face of the wheel is cut with a lathe and it's very fine. Even touching the raw finish without the clearcoat will ruin the finish. That's why diamond cut is so desirable and it sucks when people paint their wheels black. It's very difficult to duplicate diamond cut.

funny... that's exactly what makes diamond cut [I]undesirable[/I] to me.

Also I guess an old trick is to strip the clear and wipe diamond cut with brake fluid...It rainbows it.....

I use Jasco premium paint and epoxy remover from home depot. Aircraft paint stripper used to be stong back in the day but now its only stromg enough to remove spray can paint

from what i can see and what a trafficstar importer has been able to tell me, river side's diamond cut finish is an odd one.  the face is first machine on a lathe, then a VERY VERY thin layer of silver powdercoat is applied, followed by (for some ungodly reason) a polyurethane clear.  on my Mayas the clear is lifting and flaking, and generally looking like crap. :(

i'll try the brake fluid on a part of the exposed diamond cut.  i still havent decided what finish to use on the face when i refurb them :?

i've disected diamond cut wheels and that is correct. they are machined, then a layer of pearl (whether it is paint or pc i can not say for certain), and then the clear. it really doesn't seem that hard to recreate assuming the machining is in good condition but for some reason i've never seen it executed perfectly.
 
i say if you have to rebuild make sure you only have to rebuild once. powdercoat is the way to go, whether it be color or clear. i'm still wary of non-original chrome but i'll probably try it on the lips of the next set of wheels i rebuild.
