Yeah. I was looking through the service manual and came across it and was wondering what it was.

its almost exactly whats posted in the pic but its an oem part to create extra backpressure on the low end. removing it makes the exhaust sound like an american car to me so i kept it.

just removing that made the car louder?   What do you mean by sounding like an  American car?      

Also I think you can actually hear it working off the line when you gas it a good amount.

I just changed my rear muffler and It looks like a dual seperate straight through chamber for each tip.  At idle only the right tip you can feel the gases and heat.  The left tip is cold to the touch.    I even drove around and some freeway and felt the tips...right side is very hot but left side is warm and able to put my hand on without burning.

i believe it creates more burble and stuff. it sounds more...'unsophisticated' i guess u could say.
its been awhile so i forget the exact noise differences, but it was enough for me to keep it on at the time. 
i believe yukis45 removed his. see if homeslice has an audio clip.

I recently got my muffler removed and had pipes to slanted tips. Sounds pretty good not too loud and still "sophisticated".
