Dry carbon fiber look vinyl replaces wood trim

I never really liked the wood trim that came in my M45 so I decided to go out and redo it. I found this really nice vinyl by 3M. Its from their Architectural series and is made to look like dry carbon fiber. Now I know you are thinking fake carbon fiber vinyl is so ricey, and I would agree with you if this stuff did not look so good.

We are still working on a frame to put behind it to mount it to since when we cut out the backing of the ashtray it removed all the original mounting positions. Thats why it is just floating there, it will be fixed soon though.

I've seen this CF vinyl in person and it looks good on some cars. I don't really think it works with your car though. The center console would've looked better if you made the weaves match throughout the entire center instead of zigzagging. It's too bad it can't be clearcoated.

I didn't even notice the zig zagging weaves. Its an easy fix though, just need to redo the center panel, I have enough of the stuff left to do that.

I like the non cleared look of it. The M45 is a little sportier than some of the other VIP cars so I think it makes sense to have the semi tuner look of the dry carbon.

I have never been a fan of wood, even if it is "vip".

I think it looks good. I'll have to agree with the others. Make it all one direction and you're golden.

I can't believe I missed that, I am usually so picky about stuff like that. I will fix it tonight.

Now that I think bout it where did you find that stuff. I may consider wrapping my sub box in that. Would be a good look especially if I can find some that match the interior of my M45

Its from 3M and is in the line of DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes. You should be able to get it from any 3M dealer or sign shop that sells 3M.

They have different shades but the weave is all the same. Nothing as small as your interior weave.

agreed. The wood isnt bad but just dosent flow well with the car. I'm so glad mine came with the brushed finish and not the wood. The wood is a better suit for the Q45.

I got lucky with my Y34 M,  I didn't even know it was an option or existed, but mine has "graphite birds eye maple" which is this dark grey colored wood and I absolutely love it. I was never a huge fan of the bright yellowish birds eye maple.  But I definitely agree that the Y34 is among the sportiest VIP cars, and personally, I love the dry carbon look. I think yours came out great and like everyone else said already, once you get the direction the same on the center console it will be killer. Are you gonna do the shift handle too?

seen an s2000,GTR and ferrari wrapped in this stuff looks legit in person.

WOW! What plans do you have for the shift knob? Black OEM knob or will you attempt to wrap the birds-eye with the carbon?    Personally, I think the bird-eye wood looks great against the black leather interior. Im not too impressed with it in the williow interior M's.

I think it has potential because of the factory interior color of your car...needs some minor touches and I think you are set.

My peanut butter ucf10 would not flow well.

I tried to wrap the knob, it was very tough to get it to go around. I would almost need a vacuum form to do it. I am probably going to paint it black for now and maybe get a nismo or other knob later.

I love it! The whole "must be woodgrain to be vip/must be chromed out to be vip" died 2-3 years ago in Japan; everything is sporty there.
 
If it was a civic trying to be vip it would be outta place, but on a vip car, go nuts on sporty accents!

I also am in the process of wrapping my center arm rest. It is almost done but I still have some smoothing out to do on it. Once i heat it up ans smooth it out it should look nice. You cant really wrap it in one piece, you need to do the sides and then a center piece. Its like the factory one was stitched together.

I am leaning in doing my car that way too. I have always been into the sporty side of things and never felt the need to follow a pattern when doing my cars. I have never been a fan of the wood, even it is traditional VIP.

I will be adding some more classy yet sporty touches to the ride in the future.

if you want it shinier, have it laminated.  you have to get that through a vehicle wrap shop though

Actually, you can clear coat it, just not the "traditional" way.

You can use a water clear epoxy resin that will set hard like a rock, and be able to be polished like traditional paint.

Armrests looks really out of place but the rest looks OEM.  I wouldn't get too nuts with the stuff or it could come off cheesy.

word. i think the armrest and possibly the door inserts are too much. even if it is actually vinyl it is duplicating cf so i would stick to pieces that would realistically be made of cf.
 
i think it could come out even better if it was water transfer with matte clear. then you could get the shifter/steering wheel as well.

I like it.  The arm rest, I am not a fan of though.

I was thinking about doing this for the F50, but wasn't too sure on the look.... it looks pretty nice in your car, but I'm gonna have to pass

well....the door inserts are a must becasue they are birds eye wood, but  I do understand the controvery over the arm rest.

Looks sharp. I'm not really feelin the arm rest tho, i would have just re-wrapped that in leather/vinyl. and only if it was worn.

The arm rest was really worn with a tear in it. I am also not liking the armrest in the vinyl either. I will probably take it somewhere to have it wrapped in leather to match the seats in the tan.

Can't not do the arm inserts, they are the ugly wood. I will be replacing the shifter soon.

My brother bought a couple yards of this stuff and I helped him wrap his dash board on his VW bug....its actually pretty cool stuff to work with and not too hard (besides molding and wrapping corners). Just heat it up and you can stretch it and form it onto any part you're trying to wrap. I'll try to snap some pics next time I stop by his place.

that looks pretty good.  Good job on the wrap as there's no signs of air pockets or peeling.  Only on the corners where the pattern is a little warped.   If you do a good job, who cares if it's real or not, plus, OEM uses that stuff (or similar) on cars anyways.  I almost thought that was real carbon!  haha. Once I get this car, I'll make the real carbon though.....thanks for the pictures!
