FLS Y34 build thread

So after my Q was totalled out last month, I picked up an 04 M45 with 74k, and every single option available: technology package, convenience package, chrome wheels. Twilight Blue, black leather, graphite birds-eye maple. As most of you know, I'm not a fan of completely slammed, I prefer ride height to show height.

Bone stock the 1st week:

Put the wheels on 2 days before leaving for Japan, stock height, only drove on the street 2x like this, yes it's a 4x4. But now I think about it, I can't remember if this is stock height, or with the Tein's on it, before being cut, either way it's a monster donk....

This is right after getting back to the country, with the Tein S-Tech installed and cut. I'm happy with the rear, and it looks lower in person, plus with a full tank of gas and a little settled, it's gone down just a bit more.

Not bad for having the car barely 4 weeks.

I've had the car for about 5 weeks now and so far done:
Tein S-tech installed / cut - rolled rear fenders
Work Euroline FS 19"
blue LED foot lamps
"block" cell phone holder
small rear seat table
shaved INFINITI and M45 letters from trunk
new OEM front lip spoiler
new OEM fuel gauge sending unit - apparently this isn't the fix, even though it's the code, so a new instrument gauge cluster is en-route
new WIX air filter
EXEA black seat belt stopper clips all around - the greatest invention that hasn't caught on in the US
EXEA angled front license plate bracket

Full exterior detail with Mothers Professional series products and a dual action buffer. Compound / Foam Pad Polish / wax. The paint looks immaculate and I love the color beyond words. The interior is as mint as it could be, not much work needed there other than good vacuum and condition the leather. I brought back some of the LED tape lights with like a dozen on each or something like that, gonna probably put them under the front doors so they light up when opened.

Picked it up Friday 5/28, front springs were cut to where the front and rear are basically the same fender/tire gap which is 0-finger, you have to angle your finger 45º to even get it in there. Ride is still excellent, slightly bumpier but overall great. Drove it all through the Memorial Day weekend and am now officially in love with the new car.

Took it in Saturday and got it tinted 20% back doors/window, 35% front doors, limo-tint on sunroof. Not as dark as the Q was and I didn't want it to be, going with a sportier theme on this one.

Onto the latest pics:

PhotoChopped it w/ my wheels, drop and tint when it was totally stock:

The finished thing is so close to the concept! But I'd say the p-chop looks like 20's now that I can see next to actual pic.

Thanks! I really like it, it's definitely grown on me and now I've had a few weeks to actually drive it. The power is phenomenal, it's not quick, it's flat out fast. Love the interior and the cooled seats. The laser guided "intelligent cruise control" is a TRIP!! Lots of technology for 2004 IMO.

Brandicus, it's very sad, and that's where I park every day. I need to decide what to do with the old girl though, want to get it out of the warehouse one way or the other.

thanks for all the kind words! I'm not sure how many coils were cut, cause they (Status Autoworks) were conservative, which is good, so they cut them a few times to get the height where I wanted it, but Gilbert did say he cut quite a bit, it's more than 1 coil for sure. It is crazy though how good it rides still. When I installed the Tein S-Tech on the Q in 2004 on stock shocks with 76k, it rode like poo-poo. This car is the same age the Q was then (6 years) and has the same mileage, but it rides like stock, only with less travel obviously. I think maybe the shocks are new on this car, and I know that the Y34 has stiffer shocks than the Y33 did. Who knows, but whatever the case, it works!

Hope to get the exhaust done next week, I'm leaning towards just doing some double wall slanted tips on the stock muffler but I'll see what Vern has at his shop. The Magnaflow tips I like are 90 bucks each, so if he's got a dual in/out muffler I might go that route, but I like the quietness right now.

After that, I'm not really sure what else I want to do with it. Probably save up for the Glanz Butterfly-System aero kit so when Dominik makes his permanent move to Japan he can ship it to me =)

yeah, they're just springs, Riversideinfiniti.com and they're cheap. Rides great!! At least mine does. They have the JDM window visors too and they're also cheap, like 80 bucks! I was thinking about getting some, but they cover up the chrome so I decided not to. They have really good pricing and service, I got the OEM front lip and fuel gauge sending unit from them as well.

Twilight Vampire lol, I kinda like that idea....

I’m not a real fan of cutting springs, but it looks good. Past experiences still haunt me when it comes to cutting springs. I’d be curious to hear and see how your car holds up after 10k miles of driving with that setup. In my experience...struts and front tires suffered. Give us an update on the front end alignment numbers once you get it done. Good luck and it looks good

I was never a fan of cutting springs either. Until I did it on my Q. 1st I cut a little less than 1 coil all around and rode on that for 2+ years with no problem at all, then I cut about 1/2 a coil more, and still no problem. So after personal experience with cutting them, I figured screw it cause I was willing to give up ride quality to get the look I wanted, but in the end, I didn't have to give up ride quality either! I'm also curious how it will hold up but I've driven over some really rough stuff and it took it without any problem. At first I looked at this as a temporary solution till I could save up for c/o's but if the ride holds up, I'll just leave it at this.

Cool. I totally understand that remark....(willing to give up ride quality to get the look I wanted) Be very aware of the catalytic converter and how low it sits under this car. I remember scrapping mine before I lowered the car, so ....be aware of that.

Oh... may I suggest painting the satin colored trunk lid finish plate to match the car and blacking out the red & orange markers:biggthumpup: What do you think?

Oh and thanks for the tinting the sunroof glass idea. I like that shit!

Yeah, it's about as low as the Q was and it does scrape on speed bumps and unfortunately, speed bumps are part of life and the places I go. It's not bad though, tust me, I'm careful.

As for painting the trunk lid plate, I really like the satin chrome myself, especially now that I took the INFINITI letters off. I have thought about blacking out the side markers though, definitely on my possible list. I put LED's in them, so I'm not sure if I will or not, but I probably will.

Tint your sunroof glass, it looks much better from the outside, and if you slide back the cover in the day at least the sun won't be beating on your head as much.

Your ride with cut springs are just as good as your shocks are. Unfortunately the stock ones dont last too long with shortened springs. I have a solution for you. Check PM.

In other words, the stock shocks are mated to ride well with stock height suspension. With time, they tend to lag a little and the ride becomes a little uncomfy as the shocks wear out a little faster than they generally would with stock height springs.

It's to be expected that stock shocks don't last as long with lowering springs, let alone if you cut them to be even lower still. They'll ride good for a while if they're relatively new or in good shape. If they last 60k in an OEM scenario based on factory suggested replacement, they'll last you 30-40k in a lowered case based on brand new. I have no idea how old my shocks are, but I could tell right away they were definitely good. After putting the springs on, how good it still rode told me they must by pretty new and this car was obviously well take care of.

So considering I had a previous chassis car that was the same age with the exact same mileage at the time of purchase, that I put the same brand of springs, on OEM shocks, I feel pretty good in the comparison. The Y33 Q rode like crap after I put the springs on, but the Y34 M rides like it did when it was stock. So for now, I'm good. I drive less than 9k a year, so even if they lasted 30k, it would take nearly 4 years for me to wear them out.

But what Eyedea sent is a great eyedea, I'm really tapped out right now from buying the car and doing the work I've done so far but I have learned alot about this chassis and have a good idea going forward. Main thing now is I want to save up for that Glanz kit.....

But what Eyedea sent is a great eyedea, I'm really tapped out right now from buying the car and doing the work I've done so far but I have learned alot about this chassis and have a good idea going forward. Main thing now is I want to save up for that Glanz kit.....

dude thats a VERY nice first start. i put out the cash for Tein basics coilovers and the drop is OK but rides rough and VERY bumpy. i almost would rather go back to cut springs lol. never cut a spring but spent too much to have the car ride rough and not low enough for my taste

I don't feel like making a new thread, so I guess this is gonna be my build thread.

Since the last time I posted to this thread, done quite a few things.

Custom front coilovers & camber plates, approx. -4 / -5º front and rear
M3 type rear lip spoiler
blacked out SS trim on windows, B pillar and small plastic triangle at base of C pillar
JDM window visors
all interior lights are LED now, roof, doors, etc. except the ambient light
full custom dual exhaust with equalizer pipe and Magnaflow dual in/out SS muffler w/ Magnaflow slash-cut double-wall 9x3" tips
JDM Gloria LED tails

Old tails and non-wrapped stainless window trim for comparison sake

Didn't you read the thread, or at least scan through it? Custom front coilovers using stock body, threaded sleeve, Stance springs, Bilestein inserts, semi-custom camber plates and cut rear Tein's for now. Sitting on approx -4º front/rear matching camber. In the next week or two it's going to be the test-mule for a setup that will be coming to market this year.

No offense taken, but I think the Gloria tails tie in with the white/clear LED's on the mirrors perfectly.

Props to Chris Cuban GS for pushing me to turn a few wrenches last weekend. It's now lower, plus spacers and more camber. Also my appointment w/ psMAX is set for 7.26, but I'm pretty much set with the stance now, just going to bring the rear down 1/2" more and this is the new daily height. Took some more bending / tweaking / cutting to get it to roll like this without rubbing (all 4 tires rubbed all the way home from Chris' house the day we did it), but it's ridding smooth and quiet now.

Thanks!!

Went to psMAX yesterday!!! The guys and the product are just pure quality. Nothing but love!! Riding lower than I was, and I have comfort back in my ride again. When they get the 350z lower arm that eliminates the spring bucket back in stock, I'm going to add those.

This is my daily height, but can got a good inch + lower if wanted to. Also added 7mm front and 5mm rear spacers

If an inch of ground clearance is too high for you still, you could max them out. There's about 1" on the coils and 1" on the coils is actually like 1.5" in drop due to the nature of the way suspension travels.

Thanks for the compliments. I understand about air, but every car I see on air, doesn't ride as low as I do. I don't really care if someone has to drive an inch or two higher than me, but can park an inch lower than me. I definitely get the appeal, but I prefer to drive it like I park it. I did have to back up and go faster to clear my driveway after getting stuck yesterday hahaha

Mike, thanks, coming from your hard to please ass, that's a compliment! I was wondering if you saw the MAX VIP Spec Coils thread, Dan got a shot of my clearance, it's 1 lug nut standing on it's side and I thought to myself "I wonder if Mike is still going to say I need my ground clearance" LOL

I totally get where you are coming from. I am not sure why those on air would not ride as low as coils. I ride at your new daily height right now.

I want to drive with no tire showing no tire but in my case its my tires and offsets that cause some rubbing issues if I try and drive that low. I will be going with lower profile tires to allow me to get it down more.

The Air Runner System can be driven really low, I know kingpin does it.

I LOVE the lip on your front rims, totally sick.

word. I've always liked your M and enjoyed watching it develop. It's just been my experience seeing people rolling on air, when in a caravan for example, they're always so high looking, but maybe it's just a different brand than yours. The one thing which is a bridge between the two worlds that interests me the most is cup kits. Can you adjust front camber? I found with about -5º I don't rub anything in the front (and of course with the bumper mounting tab ground down a lot).

Thanks for the compliments!

Yeah, I beat the crap out of and ground that damn tab down. I also cut and rolled all my fenders. I don't think there is a camber adjustment on the kit. That is one thing I think it is lacking.

I hope that the control arms that hopefully will happen will allow me to adjust the camber.

Are the front camber plates you have going to be available for sale?

Yeah my ride is still great. I think it is since the Air Runner comes with KYB Adjustable shocks. I keep mine on the second to hardest setting which eliminated the "bounce" in my opinion.

In my prior experience with coilovers, I had a set of really nice set of KW's on my 911 , when riding low you need it really stiff. Which makes the ride very harsh, bone jarring infact.

I don't have that bane jarring rattle my teeth problem with my Air Runners.

Thanks man, that's a "historic" hotel in San Diego I did that shot back in Nov 2010.

The ride is fantastic!! I LOVE my car, ride is firm and tight, but not at all uncomfortable. I think because so much attention is built into the parts, it really helps out. There are rubber isolators on the springs top and bottom, rubber boots over the struts, etc. so road noise is very minor and it's very comfortable. I was cruising home, which is about 95 miles and looked down and went "oh shit, I'm going 100!" and I didn't even realize it. It's definitely a freeway flyer now. I've been having so much more fun and enjoyment driving the car.

I was cruising home, which is about 95 miles and looked down and went "oh shit, I'm going 100!" and I didn't even realize it. It's definitely a freeway flyer now. I've been having so much more fun and enjoyment driving the car.

Love the ride height bro!
The coils are very nice. A friend has it on his y33 and its not really bouncy even near full stiff

precision inspired confidence. that's the joy of a dialed in static suspension.

Good to know. Though your 1 inch ground clearance is measured differently from what should be 1 inch of clearance on mine. Your cat is 1inch, as to i have no secondary cats or any exhaust that hangs below the frame. I theoretically could go lower. So its the observation I made thinking about my car, not what your clearance is.

But still looks hella good! =)

I got you. But still, only the cats are lower than any other part of my car, and they are mostly within the track of the front wheels, so anything my front wheels can go over, I'm pretty much good. Still, if you look at Dan's pics, even my entire rear subframe is only about 2" off the ground. Not much you can do to change that.

you can actually see the cats on the pass side in this pic, it's not that much lower than the sub frame bar.

I suppose I'll let the cat out of the bag since we've hinted at it enough. I bought Rob's Autech kit in December and it's been sitting in the warehouse here for a few monts lol.

psh 20x10 +20 lol

The new wheels are 19x9 -6 front, 19x10 +5 rear. :P

Honestly for a nice wheel on a budget, I'd get Burgy's BNIB (!!) Falken Koblenz, 19x10 +10 all around. They look nice and are hella cheap http://www.vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28914

Kong: a 10 wide +25 will be pretty far tucked in, especially in the front. You probably won't even need to roll anything.

I took my sweet ass time choosing a new set of wheels and I did a lot of research on offsets for this particular car. I nailed the front at -6 (thanks Yudi), the wheel lip pokes out a good bit, but with the stretch and camber, everything clears. The rear was too much at +5 though, so I met w/ Tony the fender guru out in the valley yesterday to handle that.

I've wanted new wheels for a while, but only if I liked them better than what I had. I was dealing with Work on something a little over a year ago, but I still liked my Euroline's better, so I passed. Same thing w/ AME, I was real close, but decided I still didn't think they were nicer than the Euroline's so I passed again. Finally I was able to put something together with WEDS on a wheel that I LOVE. Initially I was going to get them in all silver w/ silver lip but I thought about it and figured, why not go all out? So, I did. No regrets, in daylight holy hell, IMO the car is insane killer hot. Now I love it again and don't think I'll sell it this year like I was leaning towards doing.

Current list of shit done to this bitch:
psMAX Y34 coilovers (1st set / demo car)
WEDS Maverick 210s in silver/black/bronze (1st set they've produced of this model in this combo) 19x9 w/ 215/35 & 19x10 w/ 225/35
cat-back SS exhaust w/ Magnaflow muffler and tips
Nissan Gloria LED tails
Nissan OE rain visors w/ black wrapped pillars
Car Mate rear small "hump" table
Block cell phone holder
Full interior LED lighting including the little ambient light
LED pod floor lighting f/r
LED stip lighting under doors (lights when open)
Recaro Vivo booster seat for my little guy
Liberty pin-stripe, designed and installed by me
trunk lip spoiler

coming soon:
Autech kit, front converted to fit Gloria/USDM grille (if I decide not to sell it and put the money on interior or other stuff)
rear camber & toe arms

thanks brotha!

I really think I might sell the Autech kit and do BBk, some interior stuff, paint the lower trim and call it a day, but we'll see. With the new stance, it looks so hard (to me), and I love how much you see the wheels and tires, don't want the body kit to take away from that. But on the other hand, it's already paid for and sitting here, might as well use it.

Camber is not going to make for 11mm of difference. I am running -3* in front. and he is in the negatives. I don't think diameter of the wheel would make that much difference from front and back clearances. I could go lower but i wouldn't clear the fenders.

The diameter makes a huge difference. Even my previous fronts at 19x9 +11 the tires were 225/35-19 (what my new rears are) and they rubbed a lot, but the 215/35-19 on my new ones is much shorter and more stretched.

FLS: Where does you fender sit at @Full Lock? Ground clearance yes but I am almost hetting the top arch of the fender which is why I was curious to where you fender sits at full lock. Since I am running 20 I have to cut away on some the inner plastic on the bumper and bend the metal on the fenders. I think I am running 225/35 in front 20x11 +28 in rear 245/35 definitely need to go to a 255 next time around didn't fit enough wheel on the tire.

Lowlyfe +20 and +5 are big differences.

yeah i know...but actually....not really. the 20x10 +20 sits maybe 7mm further out than the x8.5 +5. i did some math before i bought my wheels, so the sit very close to how my prev set did....only the rears would stick out about 2-3mm more. but i didnt know the fronts would hit the coilover, so i have a 7mm spacer up front making the +20 lol

so you're runnin 20x9 +5 and 20x11 +28?

The fenders are all rolled & that damn bumper mount tab I've ground down as much as possible and still have the bolt attached. The tire size makes a huge difference, those 225/35-20 are nearly 1.5" taller than my 215/35-19, that's a lot.

FLS points are valid and i am actually running a 9.5 haven't had the car on wheels and when i finally got it running had to take off to japan for a few weeks.

I checked again after work today and i am actually at about the same fender to wheel height s you but of course with more ground clearance since i have larger wheels. and that does make more sense now.

yes lowlyfe 20x9.5 +25(-20mm spacer) and 20x11+38(-10mm spacer)

I don't see how a 20x10 +20 is anywhere close to a 20x9.5 +5.

Anyhow, for myself, going from 225/35-19 on a 9" +11 to a 215/35-19 on a 9" -6, even though the new wheels are 17mm more poked out, the tire is enough of a smaller OD that it made all the difference in the world.

Word!

I used that calculator, I asked questions from people I knew with the same car, and also people with different cars. I asked LOTS of questions. Got good advice from Yudi since it was around the time he'd finsihed up his car last summer that I was figuring everything out, but mostly my homie Mr Cuban gave me the inspiration and advice to just go for it and make it work.

i used that calc when i bought my wheels to. helped confirm they werent going to stick out any further than my previous set, minus the rear a few mm.

and using that calc....your 9.5 only pokes 8.7mm more than mine. i DID run my 15mm spacers for a couple days (+12) but the tires rubbed too much, needed more camber than i had it set to (-2.8)

I think I'm prolly gonna sell the kit lol. I'd absolutely have to get air /cup kit or else leave my car out on the street, which a'int gonna happen.

Got my PBM camber and toe arms today, they're so freakin pretty, just like the coils are! Oni camber, here I come lol, just kidding. Looking to set the rear around -8 to -9. and the front maxed out I know will be -6.

There's a lot more room to maneuver a wrench there than on the other side. By simply turning the nut in the middle the dual threaded adjusters open / close, it's pretty genius IMO. I thought it was a piece of cake to adjust the camber and toe with them and got both sides the same easily.

Did you make any adjustment with the wheel on? Seems like it'd be tight on an alignment rack.

Thought we should add this pic:

damn that's pretty bad. All the damage to my 4 fenders is right along the lip, so I can touch it up and it's very hard to notice. Being dark blue next to dark rubber helps disguise it too. I guess fender damage is going to be part of life, so I want to learn how to actually do a pretty Ok job and sand it and clear it whenever needed. I figure the more I do it the better I'll get. I'm pretty decent with the touch up paint brush now LOL

Just got it aligned at Drift Speed. I guess I lucked out cause they're closing shop and moving back to Japan on Friday. I did a pretty decent job just eyeballing and old school 2x4 with measuring tape. My front was toed in, which I didn't touch other than maxing out the camber plates. But the rear which I just replaced the camber and toe arms on, the toe was -1 left, +1 right, and the camber was spot on within 4-5/100ths (6.10 vs. 6.14 etc). Toe is now 0.2 to 0.6 f/r. Front camber is -4.5 and rear is -6.2. I guess those angle apps are pretty handy, although my app said I was at -7, at least I could get both sides to the same reading and they were both nearly identical at -6.2

BTW Mike OG, I asked Koji what he thought of the arms, or if they made it difficult to align, he said not at all, the rack was a little in the way, but it was still easy enough to get to. Your comment made me curious, cause with the wheel off, it's super easy to get to them, but I wasn't really sure about getting to them from under the car with the wheels on. I asked what he thought of them, of course he's seen them on other cars, but he said he thought they were really good parts.

Thanks for all the compliments / comments! Before I did a lot of this, I had no clue, Mike helped me out with some direction and terminology on the arms, and everyone else pushes me to go harder. I think the current outcome, like Cuban said, it's like a different car, not even an evolution, but a different car.

It was alooot worse when i first saw it. i almost cried haha. then i just grabbed some rags and just pulled it back out with my hands. i figure sanding and another roll and pull should help and then just get it touched up. I was told as long as it doesn go halfway up the fender it can be touched up.

^I agree, I would like one.

I got some Z32 brake calipers f/r this week. Eventually I'll get around to painting and installing them. I've had the HID kit for my fogs sitting in my trunk nearly 2 months lol.

small update: got my rear fenders pulled about a month ago so I took out the stack of 3 delrin bump stoppers from each of the rear coilovers and I'm super happy with it now. The pull came out perfect, no cracks in the paint and the main thing is the wheels will clear inside the fenders now, so no more wheel lip to fender lip grind. And I got my ride quality back, which for this old man, is something I care about. The car has actual suspension travel, so I turned the coils back from full stiff to about 6/12 for a nice firm but comfy ride =)

Still haven't put the brakes on after 7 months and the HID kit is still sitting in the box hahaha. However, getting the fenders pulled and making the car nice to drive again has gotten me a little bit motivated to do more work to it.

took an exhaust vid the other day. Don't mind the water dripping out, it's cause the car sits in that spot 95% of the time any more lol

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but TBP was only offered on 04's and the majority of the 7500 Y34's that got imported are 03's, so I think it would be 500 or less in the North American market. I've had my M for about 3 years I think and I've seen 2 other TBP's in that whole time.

edit:
just dug up this info:
From Nissan News
Y34 based M45
2002-2003 4755
2003-2004 2099
Jan,Feb,march 2005 736
total 7590

So if TBP was only available on 2004, and they are mostly white, black and silver, I'd say the TBP and garnet color are probably total of 500 for both colors. They're definitely rare.

They made it in Garnet fire as well?

I know they made a few of the Emerald Mist M45s (same colour as my G). There's a guy in town with one, it would have had low production numbers as well, just like the EM Gs.

I'd say 75% of the ones I see are silver haha.

It took me long enough to find my black M, much less if I would have been dead set on a Garnet Fire or Emerald, haha! (Would much rather have those colors for sure)

Big thanks for the info FLS

I had my heart set on finding a brilliant silver M45 for a while to build a replica of the MP Phantom Ga-Mu Y34 but none of em met my standards. I've found at least 8 03'-04' in Hawaii (all colors including emerald mist but no TBP (I know where they live or work also btw lol)) and NO ONE wants to sell em!
