for the best sounding bass you will definately want to get a subwoofer. 6 inch speakers in your front door are not designed to reproduce much bass tones and it is not good to try and make them. sure they will play full range but they wont give u the same bass as a simple 8 or 10 inch sub will.
NOW, however, i would definately reccomend some of the focal lineup. with the right installation (KEY POINT HERE!!!!!) they can sound very amazing. in fact the entry level focal A1 will sound better than MOST people will ever want a pair of speakers to.
if you want the absolute BEST sound possible then you're gonna want to walk into a car audio shop with extremely deep pockets.. in fact dont even walk into a car audio shop because a standard brick and morter shop will, most likely, NOT have the absolute best options. go to a sound competition and find a builder and talk to him.
the alpine S is a good entry level speaker. nothing fancy and to be honest nothign good EXCEPT the price.
so i guess on a scale of 1 to 10 how GOOD do you want the setup to sound? and MOST importantly, how much money can you budget for this setup?
just as food for thought so that we are all on the same page, last week i installed a pair of focal k2rx (or whatever the model is for the $1200 pair we sell at my shop) with $800 more just for the speaker install (dynamatt and etc.) you're also gonna want at LEAST a $300-500 amp (focal solid, jl slash series, or exile, etc.) and then 200-400 for that amp install. this COULD (if you pick the right installer) net you at 7 or 8 out of 10 (in my honest opinion.)
so like i said.. how much CAN you spend on this upgrade and how high end do you want?
***everyones idea of "best sound" is different... hell some people even think BOSE is a good brand***

Budget is the 1st thing, headunit up grade will help, the right amp.. I have dls's frnt and focals in the rear, hands down focals are clearer. Running about 150w to each. Sealed xcon 12, and a sealed 10 shallow mount, mines load and clear.
Focals ftw!

most people can't even tell the difference between high end speakers and decent audio.

yeah but most people have bad taste in a lot of other things too its not just car audio.
jl c5s are nice.
two 12 eclipse vs two 12 jls depends on a lot of things. both brands make/made nice things but they also make cheap stuff as well. not to mention that the box design/build quality and amps tuning actually has MORE to do with sounding better than the actuall equipment that you are using as long as you have a decent idea about pickin out the right subs and amps but ohms law is easy.

I have always been a big fan of JL Audio subs. As far as component speakers goes, I like Focal.
