Lip Widening

Ok, so I was wondering.  I know you can widen a rim by adding mor metal on the inner section of the rim.  But what I am wondering, is it possible to do the same to the lip of the rim?  I have a set of rims that I wanna make the lips wider (I cant seem to find new barrels as the lips are unique), so is it possible to make the rim lips wider the same way as the inner section and still make it look like they are original?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, just wondeirng if it is possible.

They are 3 piece, not stepped lip...it is more like a sloped lip (D-Style)

The first place i contacted that contacted SSR said it is all welded, but I am certain they are 3 piece.  I'll wait for further response from AutoFashion and probably contact you accordingly antbo :)

doesn't matter where the company is...you just need to send one wheel and they send the wheel + 4 barrells back...I just sent mine to get the lips done...since mine are 3 piece and weak offset, i just ordered the outter barrells...

this thread now has awesome written all over it.. and i need it done too. Mine are welded two piece needs to go from 19 8.5 to 9.5 right now its a +1 off

oh man, I really want to get this done to my Scara OZs

There is a place in Michigan that does widening by welding  as well.

Too bad that C5 pic isn't working.  It is funny but I have been considering some 19" C5 in weak offsets and then get new lips.  Good to know it is a real option!

Does he at all provide a D-Style sloped lip?  All I would need is 2 lips to replace my rear lips so that I can move the lips I have in the rear to the ones up front.  So I would thus send him my one rear and he will make and test fit the new lip on the one?

Well lot of honda rims were pretty weak offsets and/or widths so they had to make a way to get the crazy fitment they wanted with the faces they liked. They actually are not the first to do this I just remember the person able to do it being mentioned in this thread from honda forums.

ya, this guy pretty much does everything...

what u need to fix on your rims?  if its simple curb rash then it prolly won't be worth all the shipping...

oh yeah, can only get 4" and 5" barells...no 4.5"

Well there some simple and bad rashes, specially on rear wheels are tha bad ones but other than that the scratches on the lips, clear coat its getting like some kind of white oxidation just by the rivets are.

Ralph is working on one of my maya rt5.it got damaged in a car wreck I had. As you know it's a 2 piece wheel. Well in order to repair it he's breaking the weld to from my damaged inner barrel. He's going install a new one but he isn't going to weld it. He's going to make it 3 piece wheel!  Now that's balls!!

He told me if I want we can make the fronts wider then the rear thus making my rear rims the new front rims which is a 20x10.5+29 the new rear would have to be 20x11.5 +0  if I did my math correctly. But these wheels will be up for sale soon so if anyone wants original specs or the super crazy aggressive lmk of course the wheels will be alot more then ! But I'll keep y'all updated !

He can do step lips but you would need an 18" face if I remember correctly.

i didnt want to start a new thread in case other people are searching for this in the future but i called 714-651-7239 and the number doesnt work.  are they still in business? does anyone have their number? i saw somewhere they cant do wider than 6" barrel. is that true cuz i want something like 12.5 and 13.5 or 14" width

i called eric vaughn machine and he can widen 1 and 2 piece wheels no problem but 3pc can only be done if the circumference of the barrel is the same and/or if the barrel wanted is as wide as he can offer. he cant increase diameter 

at minimum id like to widen the rears and for that i can go to eric vaughn if necessary but what id really want is to go 19 to 20 and widen all 4...

i know ralph and he is still in business. id suggest email, and leave your number. he should call you by the end of the day. thats my experience. i highly recommend him. i know a handfull of members on here that have had their wheels done by him

ralph and SWW and such will slap new barrels onto your faces, but if you can't find a barrel half wide enough, you'd have ralph slap it on and then you'd take it to vaughn to get widened. vaughn only does cutting and welding of aluminum wheel barrels -- he doesn't play with refinishing or rebarreling.

i called eric vaughn and he was very helpful. from what we gathered over the phone, he could make my rear barrels wider because the wheels are reverse lips. from what i gathered he could widen the front wheels to 12-12.5 and rears to 14. fronts would be perfect with no spacer but rears would be enough for stock body at 13 i think. he indeed indicated he wouldnt touch the fronts because they are 3 pc wheels and a weld would show. there is an option to that tho, one could have the weld on the lips smoothed out and chromed and have easier maintainence. thats definately something i need since i work 10-12hr shifts 6x-7x/wk.

i was thinking about emailing ralph at that email cuz i really think 20's would look better but i leave my phone on silent because i dont want it to ring at work or when im sleeping and i dont usually remember to turn the ringer on when i get up. i know i fail..... =(

949-478-2174 is ralph's new work number. I know him personally and saw this thread while browsing for info on the UAS bag kit and Phantom cup kit and called him to see what happen to his work number. He gave me this number to give out to the fellow homies that need wheels work.

Ralph is the man to go too. He made my vs-xx 20x9.5 +4, 20x11 +6 to 20x11 -10, 20x13 -10 for my 350z. He is very helpful and can do almost anything custom for your wheels. I'm planning on sending him my next set which are 19" Maya RT5 to him soon for work, possible keep them 19 with 12" up front and 14" in the rear or step lip up to 20 with an inch less width but still trying to decide what to do with them.

Long story short is i sent my OZ's to him paid him and when i opened the box it looked fine , when to mount the tires on them and they are wobbling like they are bent ???????????????
I look closely and he drilled all the holes wrong for the bolts to mount , then he obviously realized but instead of measuring and checking again he drilled again , it must of been by hand and all of them are off .
Now one side of the face is jammed against the barrel and one side has a gap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who in their right mind would build a wheel and sell it when it isn't round , that's the point of wheel , isn't it ?
To top it off the face has a register which is supposed to butt up against the barrel like a hubcentric ring and that is off as well which is why the wheel is also not round .
His idea originally was to have me to pay and send them back because he was short on money and " FIX " them . He finally changed his mind and gave me a fed ex account to pay for it .
When i questioned his method of repair he was going to take , he said he was going to weld the faces to meet the improperly made barrels and then drill open the holes wider .
I had no faith at this point and told him i wanted new barrels and i will pay to ship these paper weights back to him . He of course no longer responds .
To add insult to injury , the finish i wanted on the rims is blotchy and has fingerprints on them .
This is just insane , Ralph wright , opossum Jenkins , wright wheel what ever you want to call yourself , you took my money and gave me some crap no one would pay for .
I will promise you i will do everything in my power to keep you from butchering another wheel and ripping someone off again including getting a job as most employers do make a simple internet search .
I hope this reaches you and you do the right thing like you were supposed to in the first place as you kept assuring me that you "give me your word  . if your not satisfied you make them again if you have to .

To add insult to injury , the finish i wanted on the rims is blotchy and has fingerprints on them .
This is just insane , Ralph wright , opossum Jenkins , wright wheel what ever you want to call yourself , you took my money and gave me some crap no one would pay for .
I will promise you i will do everything in my power to keep you from butchering another wheel and ripping someone off again including getting a job as most employers do make a simple internet search .
I hope this reaches you and you do the right thing like you were supposed to in the first place as you kept assuring me that you "give me your word  . if your not satisfied you make them again if you have to .

i've been hearing nothing positive from any of these wheel builders lately. the work i have seen is plain unacceptable. needless to say i wll be rebuilding my own wheels w/ the assitance of local craftsmen i trust.

Thank god I am only refinishing wheels and not completely rebuilding the lips...Sucks to hear guys.

just got my wheel rebarreled with wheelflip..cant complain thus far

My wheels were rebuilt by B.Gorman...he went through the extra trouble of machining shims (at no extra charge) to ensure that the face was centered in the barrel.  It did take a while, but I am happy with the results.

That Vaughn guy, I am assuming he does it to one piece wheels? I know it sounds super redumbdant but my Advan RCII's are 9.5 wide with 35 offset. which is the lowest widest you can go on them I want to them to be a 10in or a 10.5. So he would have to cut and add in the inner barrel. I want this for the S14. Cause I am going to need that width at least all around

Eric Vaughn can do it to one piece or two piece, the thing is he has to see the wheels' photos before he can give you a definite answer, he has to see if there's enough lip to safely weld the new one on, otherwise if the weld is too close to the place where the spokes meet the barrels then he wouldn't do it for safety concern.

^^those dudes seem like a joke to me, i have had friends waiting for wheels for a while, not only that when they got them they were built incorrectly.

Simple wheel werks do wicked refinishing and polishing but I bought a set of weds that had been built by them and they did a shit silicone job that leaked.... Like visible gaps (that I didn't notice until I mounted a tire and was leaking at the flange)

But other than that, those guys are pretty cool.
