Fender edge design, opinions?

I went through a dilemma the other day at the body shop on how I should have the fender edges shaped and coincidentally, we have 2 beautiful TL's on this forum that have built their flared fenders differently as well so I can show you guys what I'm talking about.

Do you guys prefer the flared/rounded edge of wrxyboy's car

... or the stock fender/body line on bahc's car

I was looking at a lot of Japanese-built VIP cars and noticed that most of them will maintain the line in the rear at the very least and have either a small angled, or rounded off edge in the front.

Personally, I am a fan of keeping the line, because it looks more polished and complete, however there are a few reasons not to keep it.

Pros/Cons

Squared off edge:
-Gives it a polished factory look
-Maintains original body line
-Perfect for a clean/minimal camber look

Rounded off edge:
-Increased drivability (easier to be flush and be able to turn in the front)
-More clearance... a well thought-out design will match the compressed suspension's camber gain to be flush and avoid rub.
-Unique look
-IMO, the only way to properly rock an "oni camber" setup.

I think the best compromise is to incorporate a squared off edge that is half the size of the original. That way, it won't get in the way of drivability (example: when you're super flush and rub when making turns)

The other thing I wanted to drop my opinions on are camber angle in relation to fender design.

If you have a stock bodied car with no crazy flares, having copious amounts of negative camber is going to look ridiculous. You want a crazy flare to make the camber look not-so-crazy.

Exhibit A: stock-bodied car has the "broken" look

Exhibit B: flared Y33's

That's how some cars are able to make overboard negative camber look good. Just some things to think about.

I have never liked the fact that my front and rear fenders didn't match. I had flared and metal-widened my front fenders while I left the rear with the stock bodyline.

For one, I had made the front just a tad bit wider in the rear, which meant hell when trying to properly fit wheels. Because the S2000's fenders are unique in that there is very minimal vertical clearance, they can only be radiused so much without raising the fenders up, similar to a JGTC car.

just my opinion, so no one kill me.

when this whole aggressive fitment thing came around it was pretty unique in that not many people have done it. now everyone is just going for the sky trying to be the one that fit the most aggressive wheel with the most ridiculous specs. it's beginning to be too much, for me at least. another thing to note is, while your vision may be awesome, it's going to be only as good as the body shop that executes your vision. i've seen some cars with great blueprints, only to be jacked up by the shop.

i do prefer the extended body line look though, but on sedans it falls short when the doors aren't modified to match the style of the rear qp. makes the car look not vip and more dtm style.

here is real truth and vision of vip in my book too. if you widen the fenders, you better do the door to make it look complete!

You can tuck, poke, or be flush with either design.

When I had my fenders done, I wanted to jus have them fixed because they were kinked up from trying to ride low on aggressive rims that poke and by poke I mean stick out. Not this ish where cats are confusing the 2 between flush & poke :pat:
Anyways the body guy got crazy and decided to pull my fenders alot more than I wanted. Now I'm not to upset because now I can ride alot lower than before w/ my rear about tucking but now I wish he would have radius and pulled the doors along w/ it. I think that's the proper way to go about it. Also prevents rubbing and keeps the lines smoother. I never really wanted to touch the body, jus keep the lines as stock as possible but now that I've already had work done I'm w/ the pull.
I can't seem to decide now if I prefer the tuck look or the flush look or poked. I've seen all executed to perfection. Right now I'm on tuck though

bahc's car is fucking dope though!!!! That shits on point! The only issue for me personally and this was when I had my car in the shop. I wanted to be able to ride low and park lower. I was tired of riding higher only to park low and sit flush or whatever you guys want to call it. I jus want to be able to always ride low and then if I want to at park, drop it lower.
That's my opinion though

And it's funny because every time this question comes up, you can kinda tell who's been in the scene for a while and who hasn't. The older you get in the scene the more your views change to the opposite of how you felt in the beginning.

I personally always prefer the OEM look. That being said if you're going to do the flat look it pretty much has to match the front fender. If it doesn't it will look off. Most won't be able to put their finger on it but it won't look quite right.
Its these sort of fine details that make or break a great build.

I feel you on that. Lots of number chasers. It's one thing to want an aggressive stance so you do body work to achieve that look and another to hack up your car to fit a certain size lip. I think the factory drop is the way to go 90% of the time. It really depends on what you are trying to do. On my old build, I stayed away from it and went Jaguar style since I was using the Jag fender vents and removed the moldings similiar to the Jag. Most people don't know what they want. They just go to the shop and tell them to fit these wheels. More thought needs to be put into the whole process and what the end look will look like.

Depends on the car. On the Y33, yes you need to do th door since its over lapping the quarter panel. On other cars, the door is away from the quarter so its not needed depending on how wide you go.

well the thing with the door is that it all needs to flow. if you follow the body line and then just stop at the door then it looks bogus. but you're right it just depends on the vehicle, some cars have a larger space there so it's fine if you don't mod the door.

Depends on how wide you go. If you go about 20-25mm's wider, you can get away with not doing the door on certain cars. I prefer the door getting flared out on almost all situations though but it depends on the specs and the car.

I later regret it, My next build will definetley have the factory edge. IMo looks cleaner.

i think for that situation you can get away with it, but it lacks that certain little touch that pushes a good looking build to a great looking build. i too prefer the doors getting a little of that extra touche no matter how wide. it completes the look imo.

stock lines for me. id prefer not to pull at all. id rather radius but with the factory lines. if i were to choose a flare it would be like this. but i think they went too big in the rear.

i really hate the raked look. so id radius the s2000. raise the whole stock flare to keep it clean but pull it a lil to match the width of the front

For some reason, I feel like it won't be as radiused if I keep the line. One thing that's getting in the way is the inner fender. I guess tubbing is the only option.

it really depends on the car, tho ill 9/10 times go with the OEM style. Not all cars need to widen the door, depends on how much QP you have to play with. Some cars, the arch goes under the rear door, others have a lot of space between the two. you dont want to abruptly end a body line because of a door, but you also dont want to randomly create one just to widen the door. a trick to kind of get both styles combined, is do the flat edge, but have that edge angled to match the camber. that way, it has the OEM polish, but it doesnt create a clash with the camber or a driveability issue. also, retaining a turndown doesnt mean it has to be as wide as it was stock

Lookin through a few pics, I'm actually seeing alot of cars (33s) not pulling the door and jus doing the rear quarters. In the end though I think it's jus about how wide you wheels are and matching up the front w/ the rear.

**Out of all my most fav Y33s minus the red one and a few others, most are rockin the over fenders

Thats good body work right there, most pull out the door but leave no body line so you cant tell. Its like a smooth transition. If you look dead on from in front of the car, you can see that the doors slightly bulge out

On some cars I personally like the factory fender look. Like for my ride it was the only way to pull it off. The fronts were perfect and I had to make the rears look like the front or it wouldnt have matched. I like it cuz its got a stock look but people who know def know its been widened.

I don't have any y33's saved on my photobucket or on this computer but most do it the same way like the GS above. You cant notice

Edit: Found one

[/QUOTE]

Yea, that's what I'm seeing and learning as well. Their shits jus too on point to where they can keep the body lines

i was thinking about this as well. i like the flare look. it gives it a meaner look. the factory line style is cool too, but it doesnt stand out as much IMO

85% of the ones you see in Japan have fender work.

On the Y34, you must pull out the door or it will look bad. Because of that, it is much more expensive to work on. You can always get fiberglass flares which can go on the doors. I
