What are you doing [B]outside of working on your car[/B]? Some people dont have garages, so they have to do "sumting" when the weather gets bad.
 
 
I have garages n stuff but I think im gonna get into [B]Fish[/B]. :dance: 
 
Ive got a friend with a 500 gallon tank and its pretty amazing. Gonna start out a bit smaller (A LOT SMALLER!) than that tho.
 
Ive only had 2 beta fish (in 2 small cups)  in the past...and things didnt turn out so well, when I found out that they dont like to have company....no matter how big the tank is :pat:

Fishes and tanks are an expensive hobby.  Salt water tanks are "bippu" in the fish game.  Emerald, you're going to Japan again very soon.  There is a fish that can be found in Asia that is worth thousands of dollars.  They're called Arawana and the colored ones are illegal in the U.S.  There was one that was all white that was sold for $80,000

arawana are overrated imo. a lot of the ones that are sold and traded around grey market in the states can have health issues. and they can be aggressive and you need a large tank for them.

as for my winter hobbies... i don't really have any. i'm trying to get back into photography but time and funds will dictate that.

It's not too hard if you do a lot of reading first and start off small.  Learning to cycle the tank and get the biomedia going is key.

hopefully i wont have to be job hunting. but that might be the way of my winter. hopefully though i'll be catching up with friends and fam which is something i havent done lately. kinda got a lot going on personally thats keeping me from caring about cars and everything else. but that time of year is coming so hopefully things get better. if i can get things going back to normal(ish) i might start to house hunt. eh, kinda a lot but not really.

I've always been a huge diy'er when it comes to houses. it's one of those things that actually makes you feel accomplished when you have a job well done. just like cars it takes a lot of research, a little know how, and a bit of trial and error.

eat, drink, somke, sleep, repeat.

Shovel snow. Liquidate assets. Freshen up the house.

Between that and watching Miami Vice, True Blood, and Bones backseasons, I'll have a good portion of winter covered.

been trying to get back into drafting, but i honestly dont see that happening anytime soon. i hate living off savings so i'll prolly broaden my search to include a few other things come early next week. :shrug:

The two fishes in those tanks are $$$!  Well, not so much that arawana but the other fish.  It looks like a flower horn?  I have one and they're mean as f*ck.  Also, I believe arawana are only fresh water fish and not salt water.

Take a picture of your setup!!  How big of a tank are you thinking of getting?  Thats going to be so nice to look at and the sound is soothing, especially if your'e doing the nasty in the basement. :hsughmamoru:

About a year ago I started building a house from the ground up. I changed the plans downsairs because I didnt have a need for the extra bedroom. Soooo, I had it wired for my home theater on one side and a small Sauna room. 
 
I want the tank built into the wall behind the drop down screen. 
 
I dont know what size tank. Im kinda letting them decide whats the best route for someone starting out in the hobby. Im sure they're thinking a lot smaller than I am. :(

Winter Plans in Hawaii .... On sunny days = check out the beach with friends, BBQ some mean kine food, and enjoy the surf. Winter Swell!! Or if its flat, time for some stand up paddle and go exploring! Walk down a few blocks to the wall on Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki and play a few pick up games of beach volleyball! On rainy days = wait for it to get really muddy, and go 4 wheeling / off roading in my truck!!!

Wife is off to Japan for most of the winter to see family. And I am house hunting and been slammed with work, hence the lack of activity on the forums.

will be going to big bear then taking a trip up to san ho, frisco and sactown

Hahaha, she needs to start off small so she doesn't kill as much fish as everyone always does when they start and don't know how to cycle the tank.  Always start off with some cheap damsels and a bunch of snails and hermit crabs.  They can get the biomedia going and start getting the tank safe (nitrogen levels) for better more expensive fish..but it can take months and months to get it going..sometimes well over a year.

i guess i'll just stick with my walmart gold fish and my mini koi fish.

What I always did was atleast 55 gal tank started with damsels about 12 . also filled the tank with live rock and leave it alone for atleast 6-8 weeks you will notice the live rock died from the water not being cycled , once the rock starts turning purple again you know your ready. ofcourse checking the levels making sure it is safe Then i would throw some clown fish in there. It's easier to keep safe levels with a big tank trust me I did the whole salt water thing a few years back. when I moved out of my apartment to the inlaws for a little while I sold my tank and fish. I.m looking to get back into it but dont really have the money rite now for the setup I want

my mom bought a salt water tank years ago. those things are a bitch to take care of. you need to clean the tank out regularly. change the water. make sure you have the right ph etc etc. fish are expensive. it looks really nice to look at but i hated having to maintain it. after all our fish died we just emptied it out and now we have a huge ass empty fish tank in our foyer.

as far as fish tanks, yea i had both a fresh water, and salt water. i could not hang with a saltwater tank those things are maintenance AND keeping its environment steady is a handful. i took a step back and went into fresh water tanks again and thats cake. the only downfall is that fresh water tanks dont have any cool exotic fish, except for crazy aggressive ones. all i used to have was tiger oscars and red oscars, red devils, cichlids, and tiger barbs here and there. my salt water tank i had 2 yellow tangs, 6 damsels, and a tomato clown..... ahhh i miss my tanks but i dont id wanna get back into it.

Philly, I've been doing saltwater tanks and setups/aquascapes for my self and others for over 15 years (ranging from 14g up to thousands of gallons for full wall divider tanks and wave action reef break tanks)  I also used to breed brackish fish, mostly more rare ciclids and puffers and sold them to fish stores.  IR filters and protein skimmers are also pretty important as well...not to mention water changes and supplements.  It can get expensive, but once you get a good ecosystem going, it's pretty easy to care for with minimal maintenance.

Well, They came and took a look at my space and went over the "vision" I had....
 
Said Vision will cost 9k(+), plus a contract fee for them to come and maintain it (1yr. Min.) until I feel comfy enough to do it myself. :sad:
 
I wanted the tank built into the wall behind the sliding movie screen. The size we came up with was 60x36x18
 
Price included building the false wall and tank structure, a custom "show" tank (prolly just a normal tank...gave it a funky name and charged more!) re-wire everything, retune the projector and sound system
 
They do commercial tanks but will be putting me in contact with a couple residential customers to see their work and get a better "feel" for what Im getting into....if I decide to go forward with the plans. 
 
on the fence but not sure how I feel about people coming over to "maintain" the tank...and then having to do it myself after the first year.

Thats what Im afraid of......

This winter, I'm going to look for a GF.  Someone to keep me warm until the spring.

Hope the weather does not break on arrival so I can take a liberty trip up to ny and give my baby a temporary resting place.
