19" and 20" wheels use the same face?

how long has this been going on for? i noticed oscar talked about this in another thread, and as i was looking at my wheels, my 19's are also stamped for 20's on the face. so they just use a 20 inch  outer diameter with the middle "shrunk", or "pinched down to a 19 inch diameter? just wondering when they started doing this.

yes, depending on the maker of the wheel. basically the lip flares away from the outer diameter of the wheel subtly. it allows the manufacturer to use the same face for 2 different wheels, just changing the barrel. cuts down on cost, since they don't have to create a 19" and 20" face, they just use the same one.

step lip does the same thing, but the increase in diameter is obvious.

Only step-lipped wheels use the next size down face.

this is what i always thought. 

i dont think theyd use a 19 face for a 20 wheel
u can turn a 19 face into a 20 but with a step lip

I don't know of any companies that use angled lips anymore. BBS used to with their Super RS's.  Most lips are either flat, or stepped.

Yep. CCW does use a tapered lip on some of their wheels.

ssr is the same, its full reverse 15in(no gap between the face/lip), same as 16in standard reverse(small gap between the lip/face)
