Installing Megan Y33 Coilovers on the Y34

As most of you may know, I have done a lot of r&d on the y34 sus including building a custom air and coilover set with bilstein inserts. 
To give credit where its due, none of this would have been possible without the guidance and skilled workmanship of the gentlemen at my shop [URL="http://www.eastsidemufflers.com/"]Eastside Muffler[/URL] 
FLS and I have run these on our cars for a while and both loved them. 

Eventually I wanted to move away from this and do some research on a readily available suspension option for the y34 thats inexpensive; the megan y33 coilovers.

Thats right! you can use the megan Y33 coilovers on your y34.

What you need.

1. Megan racing Y33 Coilovers: This should be a no brainer.

2. Megan racing Z32 rear coilover sleeves: Megan does sell Z32 rear coilover sleeves that fit S13 coilovers for those who are using rear 300ZX knuckles on their S13 chassis. These sleeves allow you to use the y33 rear coilover suspension with the Z32/y34 knuckle.

The Y33 front coilovers will fit on the Y34 without any major modifications. Original spindles must be welded onto the lower front brackets.

The Y33 rears coilovers will require a little modification to fit.  << Read below why>>

Even though the stock shock's mounting bolts are 4.5 inches apart, The rear coilover's mounting bolts on the rear top plates are too large and will not fit the holes once you remove stock shock. The option I choose was to enlarge the holes on the mounting point[B] on the body of the car [/B]to allow the top plate to fit. Was an easy 15 minute job per side, which any good installer can perform.

The rear sleeve will bolt right in without any problems

Since the Y33 Setup on the Y34 converts your sus to true coilovers, you will have to remove the rear springs. This makes it super easy to adjust your suspension as needed to achieve the ride height you want.

The car rides amazingly well, megans offer dampening adjust-ability that allows you to tune your sus however you want it. Well worth the $xxx I paid for them.

This is AWESOME and the kind of info that makes this forum. Great work and keep us posted!  does this have a positive effect on the wheel sixes you can now run or is it still limited by the total fender space of the car rather than the suspension arms?

no effect on wheel sizes u can run. you r not changing the geometry of the rear axle.

Well, The Z guys have found a way to do a spring bucket delete and replace it with a toe arm.

I am in communication with the gentleman that manufactures this set to see if its a feasible option for those that love to go all out :) (not naming names). Need to find out the length and compare it to the length of the y34's spring bucket.

Yet again, nice work Rob. Only reason to replace spring bucket is if you put mirrors under your car at shows to floss a clean underside, otherwise, not needed besides looks.

Considering how low some of us roll, i doubt if anyone is brave enough to put a mirror on the underside of our cars, unless its to claim stake on the battle scars of riding low :)

You can get away with just opening up the existing holes

The car rides amazingly well, I am satisfied with it.

In other news, I was in contact with a gentleman at megan racing today and directed him to this thread. We will work out any details, so there is a huge chance these might be available pretty soon.

The rears are adjustable.

I have not done any R&D on the toe arms so i cant vouch for them until i try it out

So what updated info do you need?
What pictures of my suspension would you require?
What reservations do you have about going this route?

Eyedea - mainly pictures of it installed and where the suspension was altered to fit. Welds, drilling etc.

There was no modification done to the fronts. Direct fit.

As per the rears, if you call swapping the bottom sleeve (made by megan) a modification, then it was modded.

 There isnt anything special about enlarging a hole using a drill bit, so i dint bother with taking pics of it. 
I do not have any other pics of my install.

Y34 and F50 sus is almost identical, so without a doubt, it should be the same process.

The Y33 rear coilover is a true coilover: the spring is over the shock & Rob's adapted it to fit. Now the bucket that formerly contained the spring on the Y34 and F50 design is just an empty bucket.

Great to hear Megan might make an application available.  Hopefully they will make the top mount bolts smaller in the rear.

Anyone here running the Z33 SPL camber arm as well?

Realistically, the market share for Y33s is larger than the Y34. Its purely a numbers game since they only made ~6500 or so of the Y34s for 03/04.

It wouldn't take too much to make this happen other than keeping a stock of Y33 COs on order with an option to swap out a couple of parts if someone is ordering for a Y34.

I would really like to see someone else try this and report back :)

Granted all the R&D i have done have been only for my benefit, which then transcends to the benefit of fellow y34 owners, I would like to see how many people are interested in getting y34 coilovers.

Thank you for doing all the R&D.  If I hadn't already bought my coilovers I would have been down for a Y34 specific set.  I did want to say that my Z32 to S13/14 lower mounts were too narrow, I had to shave down the hub mounts by about 1/4", not hard with a Sawzall and grinder, only added about 20 minutes to the job.

I have Y33 coilovers and ordered the Z32 S13/14  rear lower mounts from Festive Garage, they had the best prices online at the time(the listed pricing is about $15 more now).  They had two listings for them, one for S13 and one for S14, both have the same part number, and Megan only lists one part number so I assumed they were the same.  I ordered the S14.  I was surprised they didn't fit.  I had to shave down the mount on the hub, the mount has a smaller radius on each end for about 2-3mm, and I just cut that part off on each end.  Then I reused the stock mount bolt and bought a M12x1.25 nut since the Z32 S13/14 lower mount doesn't have an integrated nut like the stock one.  Also, if it helps, the stock top mount bolts are 108mm center to center, where as the Y33 is about 116mm, hopefully Megan can put a Y34 kit together so we don't have to drill those holes out.

Unfortunately, it would not be a cost efficient idea to sell complete coilover setup with welded spindles as for every set i make, i would have to purchase new OEM parts then butcher them. 

My point was to show interest on this product by adding names of members on here. The sooner we do this, the sooner the product can reach the market.

could just find one spare set of spindles and do a core program.

Your description of this is dead on. 
Glad you figured out that you can pretty much use the z32 sleeves with any coilover, which opens up a lot of options for the y34 platform. BC, JIC...The list is endless...

Ah I gotcha to show interest for Megan to make an application for Y34/F50.

Yes, the megan bottom mount is a little thinner than the stock one so you have to shave the hub down a little bit to make it fit.

Please work with OG if he is interested in doing a core exchange program for the y34 Coilovers. I am sure many members would appreciate this.

Why would you want to pick up a set that you may not otherwise use?

I would suggest just cutting and welding the current ones you have, they are prob half lifed already since your car is an 03/04. If you choose to go back to stock, you can then purchase a new set then.

^ Just a suggestion. You are otherwise free to do what you feel is best for your car.

Buying new ones would be the way to go... I originally wanted a spare set, so I could continue to drive my car, while getting the fronts welded.

I dont know if there are any other companies that make the sleeves.

The ride on mine is awesome. Megans are pretty good for the price. if you are not a fan of them, BC also offers a similar setup for y33. Additionally, another gentleman here installed y33 jics with the megan sleeves. Its just an aluminum piece anyway, nothing too fancy abt it.

As per my air setup, I sold it to another member. Coilovers are more practical for me right now. I have however been debating on getting the cup kit sus. :)

i haven't been keeping up with this thread since it seemed like you guys were on the edge of figuring it out for yourself, but it looks like there may be some interest here. i can get custom spec bc racing made that will only require the spindle modification. those that are [I]seriously[/I] interested, get in touch with me via pm. by "seriously interested" i mean ready to get on a list and give a deposit. there will be a lead time, since some parts will  have to be modified on the design level.
 
as far as the spindle modification/core program, i'll probably leave that up to you guys to source. i'm a one man operation and it would eat into the time i need for my locals.
