How often do you service your air suspension pump?

How often do you service your air suspension pump?

I was just thinking about it and no one ever seems to bring this up .
So here is the question , do you ever or did you even know it needs to be serviced at all ?

What needs serviced ?
Inside the magic compressor is a small metal piston that has a rubber /plastic ring to create a seal.
Over time it wears , usually it is a life of 2-3 years but can be shorted quickly by extended run periods such as full tank dumps or any other usage that keeps it running hot for more than 3 minutes .

Other factors are cold weather .
If their is moisture in the chamber and it freezes it will damage the sleeve insert . Also a frozen line from the compressor to the tank will cause the pump to keep increasing the pressures until it burns the compressor , blows the line or the water trap if it is installed. The pressure protection switch is in the tank so the blockage will not let it see the psi raise to turn of the pump as a fail safe .

This is also a great time to mention if it freezes where you live you have to have a water trap that is dumped a few times a week .
A compressor that runs at 100% duty cycle in case of line freeze . It makes it slower but more reliable .
Air pressure sensors to monitor the tank at a bare minimum . Don't let some sales person sell you a system without one it is 100% needed.

All compressors have a seal and need maintenance . it is usually not hard to do and they cost $20- $50 depending on the make and size of pump. Usually just undo the bolts on the head and pull the piston up and then remove and reinstall the seal and close it back up . Usually 20 minutes work .

Another quick fix that is easy to do it to buy some air tool oil . It is a very thin oil used to coat the inside mecahnics of air tools. Take of the inlet fitler and shoot a few drops inside of it . if the compressor is worn inside it will start to make a deeper slower sound and heat up less. This Causes the oil to stick to the walls and the piston cerating a seal and increase the pressure to the output . It works just like putting oil in an engine after your first compression test to check for blow by .
The compressors are all non oil technology so do it at your own risk , just like seafoam .

every compressor i've ever seen get rebuilt failed shortly after. for the price vs. effort i'd just run em til they die and replace.

an air trap is by no means 100% neccesary, maybe in your climate. draining the tank is however, trap or not.

by the time 3-4+ years comes around it might just be better to buy new compressors. You get a fresh motor and factory installed pistons with seals. If they are running and filling up fine then I see no reason to rebuild. I can understand shorter life in harsher climates though.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
The main reason of this thread is to know you have an option when it isn't working properly.

I completely disagree that an air trap is in neasacary. Any pnuematic system needs to have a trap in cold weather it is the only way to do it. Water and metal causes rust which sticks valves and causes rubber bags to crack from the inside out as it is contaminated.

You mention rebuilding them caused "them " to fail. To define that statement , how many pumps , who made them and why where they rebuilt. Replacing a seal in no way should cause them to fail unless it way broken before or installed improperly. It is just a simple seal otherwise that kind of thinking would mean a more complex thing like an engine should never be worked on. Know what I mean.

an air trap isn't necessary because it doesn't remove 100% of humidity. no matter what you do you will have water in the tank and lines.

i didn't say rebuilding them caused them to fail, i said they failed shortly after being rebuilt. they weren't changed as maintenance but repair. diffrent topic i suppose.

an air trap isn't necessary because it doesn't remove 100% of humidity. no matter what you do you will have water in the tank and lines.

Rubber used for air bags are made from Synthetic rubber.. much more durable from breakdown/cracking from any elements than Natural Rubber.. shouldnt have anything to worry bout in that dept...

i didn't say rebuilding them caused them to fail, i said they failed shortly after being rebuilt. they weren't changed as maintenance but repair. diffrent topic i suppose.

exactly, you'll never be able to remove 100% of moisture from the air. if you're in a dry locale, like AZ or NM, i would highly doubt you would ever need a water trap. in southeast texas or florida it makes more sense due to our regularly high levels of humidity. so no, it's not a necessity for EVERYONE. for 60-70% maybe, but not for everyone.
