loud whinning noise

i know theres topics about this but cant find none with this problem wondering if yall can help me,firt off its a 92 ls400, i know my power steering pump needs to be fixed but i know this noise is not comming from that at all cuz i just topped it off with oil, it started today when i was taking wife to work it was a loud whinning noise it goes in and out sometines and gets real loud and anoying at times? i parked the car stated it up and it wasent making no noise then i reved it up then it started to make the loud whinning, what is is?? i thought it was my water pump going out but never heard no whinning noise that loud from a bad water pump, could it be my belt? i kinda smelled a funny smell like it could be the belt but i may just be just asuming stuff? any help plese from you lexus guys thanks much:pat:

adding power steering fluid to a damaged pump will not keep it quiet. i can almost gaurentee that it's your power steering. another possibility is your alternator is starting to suffer from having power steering fluid dumped on it. either way: replace ps asap, hope alternator is ok.

What about your timing belt? How many miles do you have on the car, and how many miles ago was the last timing belt service? If the answers to both are 'I don't know' you might want to look into it. If I remember correctly, 1UZFE needs timing belt service every 60-80K or something.

Another option could be to start the car, pop the hood, have someone sit in the car and do whatever you did to reproduce the problem, and stand above the engine and attempt to better pinpoint the noise. I know it sounds retarded, but a stethoscope can help you pinpoint noises in engine components.

its real hard to pin point the problem cuz its so loud, all i know its comming from the front, the car got 257 on it, i never changed the belts

i think its a belt if its a loud whining noise... or its the car wishing it was an infiniti. :biggthumpup:

Seriously, take it to someone that can figure it out. Makes no sense guessing what it is on the internet and replacing parts based on a guess. I call that throwing money at your car. For example, what if the powersteering pump is actually OK, and it's the power steering lines / hoses that are leaking? You would replace a good pump, and still have a leak, and still have the new noise. Granted this is a 'what if' scenario, but do you see what I mean?

If you don't want to, or don't know how to figure out what is wrong, take it to a mechanic. If you are on a budget, you can just pay for diagnosis, and then try to perform the repair yourself. But from what I'm reading on the forums here so far, I would just recommend taking it to a mechanic at this point....

Probably an idler pulley, or tensioner.. Take a long, I mean long screw driver or a long rod (long but thin) and probe around. Example, hold one end to the bolt that holds the idler pulley, and the other end of to your ear. If the sound is very loud, there's your problem, if it sounds muffled keep probing around... 

If you can't pin point it then, take your serpentine belt off, and start up the engine.. If the sound is gone, it has something to do with a drive accessory.. I.e. Alternator bearing, a/c clutch bearing, idler pulley, tensioner, p/s... If the sound is still there with the serp belt off, then your sound is coming from behind the timing cover area... That job requires a lot of work, and might as well service your timing belt, water pump, etc...

I'm guessing spun bearing in alternator.  Very loud, very annoying whining noise.

I think it could be either PS or tranny starting to go bad.

it could be the crank pulley. i have the same experience with my sc300. the pulley was whining loud as a screeching bat of hell.
