How To: COMPLETELY disable VDC and Traction Control

Disclaimer: Doing this will void any possible warranty you may have. The mod itself is not risky, it's what you can potentially do with the car without the car saving your butt. Basically, if you do this, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DRIVE WITHOUT THE VDC/TRACTION CONTROL DISABLED! The M45/Q45 are heavy heavy cars and can be a handful.

What is this: This mod allows you to completely disable VDC and the traction control. On the M45/Q45, you have a button that disables VDC to some degree. This allows you to get the car a bit more out of shape before the car's electronics reel ya in. However, Traction Control is STILL ENABLED with the VDC turned off. This means, you cannot do burnouts, drift, or let the wheels slip a little on hard cornering to bring the car back in line.

Please note that this was done to a 2003 M45. I got the idea by seeing that it was done to a 2003 G35. I'd like to say that Nissan doesn't change their wiring colors around between cars for similar years, for cost purposes (hell, they stuck the VQ in like 5 different cars). So, if you have a 2003 Q45, you could almost realistically do this to yours as well...or any other 2003-2004 Nissan/Infiniti... just got to find the Yaw Sensor.

No images available. It's pretty straight forward

Install Time - < 1 Hour

Tools / Parts Required:
- Screwdriver, phillips
- Wire. 16-18 gauge should be fine
- Switch of some sort. Something that either opens and closes a loop. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Electrical/Rocker-Switch/_/N-2696?filterByKeyWord=switch+single&fromString=search
- Wire cutters
- Crimpers and crimp connections for the switch
- Solder, Soldering Gun
- Electrical tape

Nice to have:
- Extra wire loom
- Flashlight
- heat shrink

1. Remove center console. Open the ashtray and pry on the trim around the shifter.*
2. Remove the two screws near the cupholder. Remove cupholder.*
3. Remove trim around tape/cd deck by prying on it carefully.*
4. Remove 2 screws behind tape/cd deck trim piece that holds the ashtray. Remove ashtray.*
5. Remove 4 screws around rubberized trim piece. Remove trim piece.*
6. Remove 2 screws at the rear of the shifter, on the trim piece. This allows the metal brace to be removed.*
7. Under the duct for the aircon system for the rear vents is the Yaw Sensor. On it, it's labeled "Do Not Drop". That's what we want. How I got access to it was by yanking on the duct, bending it slightly, removing the 2 10mm nuts, and then pulling the sensor, with wiring, as far as I could. This allowed me to remove the wiring connection.
8. Looking at the wiring connection, you are looking for an Orange wire. On my 2003 M45, it was on the bottom, in the middle... slot 2.
9. Leaving some slack on the wire near the connector, cut this wire.
10. Strip the factory wires and solder extensions to those wires. Use heat shrink tubing to cover the new connections. The new wires should be long enough to go to a switch that you can place wherever you'd like. I put mine in the armrest with my Ipod connection.
11. Connect the wires to the switch.
12. Turn the car to the on position and see if your SLIP and VDC light is on or off. If they are BOTH ON, that means the switch is in the OPEN position and that the Traction Control and VDC is disabled. Your display will also indicated that VDC is disabled. If you see your ABS light is on, you got the wrong wire. Turn the car off, flip the switch to the other position. Turn the car back to the on position. BOTH SLIP and VDC should turn off. If not, you got the wrong wire or the switch isn't set properly. With the switch in the CLOSED position (VDC and Slip lights are off), your car will function like normal... you can use your VDC OEM button to disable VDC if you'd like.

If everything is working as it should, reinstall everything.

*Y34/M45 Specific

Results:
I found a dead-end street out in the middle of the desert and was able to do a full burnout with SLIP and VDC disabled. Just make sure you put it into Manual mode, otherwise the gearbox will upshift for ya.

Enjoy, be safe and don't go about tossing your car into a tree, curb, other cars, etc.

I also was able to do a pretty strong, smokey burnout. I'll likely take it to a drift event this coming week to toss it around. Pictures/video of such insanity ensuing :)

i find that statement by burgy to be quite odd.

Question is, how will they know the root cause of an accident once it happens?

Lets face it, most insurance companies will not be looking for modifications such as this to the vehicle. their prim. objective would be to determine if the car is repairable or not.

unless u raise flags, they wont care.

Which is my whole point. On most basic accidents... And ven on more serious ones, insurance companies are looking at cause of accident (high speed, breaking the law, etc) vs what electronic gizmos were or were not working.
But then again, the whole point of this mod is to allow you to push the ar to the limit off the street (ie race tracks)... Where insurance claims are null/void anyways.

Either way, for those who hate being confined to the cars restrictive VDC and TC, this is for you and not for the folks who are afraid of race tracks and pushing their cars. Just make sure you're smart about it (ie. No full on drifts on a street).

Nice write up . A little more complicated than what I did but you have the option to turn it back on which I don't so I may looking into going this route especially if I look to drive in the rain in the future for added safety.

First week I got the car, I noticed that I couldnt even do a burn out despite having 340hp 325lbs torque. Once a Benz e320 pulled on me, I had enough and started pulling fuses to give the car the balls it really does have. I pulled like 3-4 fuses including vdc, traction and ABS. I like having full control of the car. It will snap your neck back when you mash it which I rarely do these days

My Wife has been doing insurance as an independant agent for 6 years. I promise you that this is true. There are a number of reasons, but for one, if you have ABS TCS etc on your car you recieve a discount for safety features because it reduces the Insurance Co. risk. If you disable that, their risk level goes up and you would be required to pay a higher premium to make up for it. MORE importantly, if you had it on your policy and then disable it without telling your agent, it is considered lieing.... and for those that don't follow, that is called insurance FRAUD. Once this occurs the Insurance Co. are NOT required to pay a dime.

Oh and cliams departments have entire teams of research/investigators

i agree with burgy -- i've heard of insurance claims being denied because cats were rocking jdm bumpers and with crash beams removed. modifying anything "safety" related on your car is a risk when it comes to filing an insurance claim

Again, providing supporting documentation that turning off the VDC will have all claims denied.
Especially since you have an option of turning it off anyways.
I am sure a large lawsuit would be created if an insurance co denied a claim due to turning off systems that the car company provides.

Removing crash bumpers vs turning off VDC is a bit different

So, before you make any more further scare-tactics type of posts, provide evidence.
Finally, this is intended for track usage ;) so, thanks for your misinformed input, but it's not pertinent.

well, this thread piqued my curiosity, so i did some googling.

it seems that if your insurance company is giving you a discount on your premium because of factory-installed safety equipment and you don't report removing that item (and consequently losing the discount), your insurance claim may very well be denied (and insurance fraud proceedings enacted, etc.).

i'd assume that if you disabled the traction/vdc/vsc/whatever and reported it to your insurance company, you'd be in the clear (as far as insurance claims go). your insurance premium will also possibly be much higher.

anyway, there's an awesome thread on e46fanatics called "ask an insurance adjuster" -- i'd post there but i don't think i have an account there hahaha

besides the point that this mod isn't removing anything, just disabling it allowing you to use it at your own free will.... insurance claims are a moot point when you SHOULD be using this mod, on a race track.

christ, for a forum that is about modding cars and making them potentially dangerous (ie. riding on bump stops, wheel to fender interference, etc) , surprised to see such a push-back against this.

nobody's pushing back. if you read the thread, most people think this is pretty awesome. we're all appreciative for the info you're giving the forum (thanks for that, btw), but i wouldn't want anybody to actually do this mod without first understanding the possible consequences of doing so.

These cars are not that heavy, they're under 4k, and a fully loaded 911 turbo weighs more than that.

Anyhow, I did a 90' long burnout (we measured with a 200' tape, it was just over 90') with just disabling VDC, I've done loads of them, the trick is you can't power-brake, just put it in gear and mash it. When I tried to power-brake, it didn't work at all, but when I turn off VDC and stomp on the gas, whoooo-weeeee!! At least it works like that on mine.

This is true. Insurance companies are good at finding reasons not to pay, so don’t help them by permanently shutting off VDC/TCS, cutting seat belts, tinting head lights/brake lights, etc.....:tmyksg8:

guys, I mod my car and don't care about deactivating things, but I let my agent (my wife) know and it isn't fraud. I pay slightly more because of it sometimes too.

I am NOT trying to tell you to or not to do this, I am simply telling you the facts that if they find out you did and didn;'t report it you are F-ed.

as for documentation, I don't have a written proof, but my wife does insurance for an independent brokerage, our maid of honor runs an entire team at progressive, her boyfriend runs an entire 2nd team, three of my car buddies do auto insurance, a girl friend of mine does claims for another company, my wife has multiple friends that do insurance as well, and the ALL say the same thing. IF you mess with safety features AT ALL on your car without reporting it, you can have your entire claim denied based on that fact alone.

I am just trying to help, not hate.

pressing a OEM button and deactivating an entire system are two TOTALLY different things

"If I tampered with and/or deactivate safety features on my car and do not inform you can I have a claim denied just based on the fact that I failed to inform you of it?"

and now that you are going to act all high and mighty on me, you clearly have no idea who you are talking to. I apologize if I have dropped real knowledge that could save a fellow member thousands of dollars and more importantly their hard work by making a true statement that you don't like. If you were so smart that you could act all tough on me then you would have been smart enough to put "FOR TRACK USE ONLY" right in your initial post and you would have let everyone know that it could have detrimental consequences with their insurance.

[QUOTE=Driven;363049]Again, providing supporting documentation that turning off the VDC will have all claims denied.

This info is nice to know but I'm sure most here won't even try this mod...VERY few even drive these big body cars hard. I for one would never do this mod and do not drive my Q hard at all. Too expensive to buy tires and transmissions all the time.

It's true that people mod their cars like crazy on this forum, and some of the mods are not safe, but no one on here is taking their car to a race track to drive fast on it. I have always thought I'd like to auto-cross my car just for the hell of it, but until they bring auto-x back to Hollywood Park's parking lot, I'm not going. Anything over 15 minutes away is not worth it for me lol.

This forum is about style and looks, functionality takes a back seat. I'm probably one of the harder drivers on here, I love speed, but at the same time, I don't care like I once did, going 90 on the freeway is good enough for me. And if I need more speed, there's a K1 indoor go-kart track just down the road.

You hit the nail on the head! This is a big body luxury car and not some 1996 civic or sentra.

I never drive in the rain with VDC turned off.
Heard many interesting stories when people do.

The F50 is practically undriveable in the snow with all seasons and VDC off. It's manageable with it turned on.

If you have an aftermarket/custom exhaust, you can also just unplug the exhaust valve actuator located under the car by the diff. Before I lowered my car, I could unplug it without jacking it up. Although, if the battery is removed, you need to replug in the actuator and then unplug it again. It turns off the VDC, my bald rear tires can attest to that.
