Scion xB Build by White J
Hey guys, I have been lurking on here for a minute now and I have gotten most of my parts together over the past 2 years. I am now ready to finish my car and I would like to post up so that I can gain some insight. All comments positive/negative are welcome. My name is Joe and I live in So Cal. Big thanks to everyone that helped me with my vision so far (Scottytuned, todd2die4) and everyone else doing big thangs. Thanks again!
Beginning:
I really haven't one that much, but about 1.5 years ago I begna to build with a different eye. I began to think of the car as a whole. So far I am about 50% of the way through sound deadening. I hope to finish the car in the coming months so I can show in summer.
Air going in:

hmmm... very interested in your DIY! there was a guy on scionlife selling a conversion kit, using machined stock hubs and rotors and lines off of an mr-s or something, but he wanted 800 with core exchange and like 100 shipping.

Yep. That is the kit I used. He has sold a few of the kits, but I am the first on that did 95% DIY as far as "machining" the hubs and caliper brackets. I actually used a dremel. It really wasn't that hard tho. Took about 3 days of work and the outcome was well worth it.

I bought FatMat from eBay got 100 sq ft and I will probably need more lol. I got the sludge from a local guy that had bought 5 gallons to do his hotrod and had 2 full gallons left over. At $50 for the lot, I couldn't pass it up. I have done the entire rear section and the wheel wells up front and I still have 1.25 gallons left.
xBs are notorious for sounding like tin cans. People think that wrapping your door panels and headliner and installing all kinds of heavy weight (i.e. sound systems, etc.) is going to make the car quieter. IMO it only adds to the level of noise made on the inside. I don't even have my carpet or back paneling back in yet and my car is 2-3x as quiet as the stock one I have rolled in. I can't recommend this stuff enough. I can actually hear myself having conversations in the car now=).
On with more pics:
First day I got the parts-

Disassembly-

Caliper cleaned with wire wheel-

Caliper arm machining-

Calipers painted-

Hub doesn't fit-

One hub machined-

Tear down of stock rear-

Mounted-

How it sits(sorry for the rims they are dailies)-
I have about 2k miles on the kit and absolutely love it. I believe the biggest gains were made in the 4 corner SS brake lines and performance pads. All in all the kit cost $5-600. I didn't have to replace the rotors or pads in front, but I decided I would do it some day and I wanted everything to match. Also, I didn't need SS fronts to make the kit work, but I wanted everything to be equal.
More pics to come.

Well I have some mock ups of my kit. After seeing my homies whip on air with a stock set up, the car is going to be way to low to fit my ChargeSpeed kit (it is 2" lower than stock). I have a couple of quick pics with my lowering springs on 2" drop. ES front struts 3rd gen with a 2nd gen top hat will add 1" of lift to the front and I will be able to ride with less psi(ride comfort). Switched up some used Slam Specialties re-5 for re-6 so I can get 2" more out of the rear. All things considered, it should work well for the kit and daily driving, not necessarily aesthetics.

Some updates as of recent work:
Obtained some E'Sam mirror covers with LED markers in them. Plans to shave the fender markers and run em in the mirrors. Currently researching sequential blinkers, may get a little crazy!

Puddle lights:

The way I am going to run them, drilled into the sheet metal on the bottom of the doors. Probably run 3 in the fronts and 2 in the rears. This was just a mock up!

Also, after much debating on DIY, I decided to tackle the door panel inserts. I am glad I did it myself. Much more satisfying that way. I used duct tap to mask off for the base and 3M over that. the 3M wouldn't stick to the doors. I use Goo Gone to remove any residue the duct tape left. All 4 doors took 2 days total.

Also, I never really posted pics of my air ride gauge set up until so I'll do that now. This is in the center console oven and the door closes for stealth mode and easy access:

I got the hook up on an air kit, and now I am debating switching things up:

I am 100% satisfied with my bag set up, but I don't like the sound of the paddles on the inside of the car. I guess that is my one gripe. Let me know what you guys think.

Yeah I hear you on the billet...Scotty and I went back and forth about it. It was just to stall my car out a bit while I wait for the kit to get sprayed and fitted. I think you'll like what I have coming up.

Worked on stance a bit and stretched a skinnier tire out back. Sit about 1/2" lower now:
Before-
After-
I am still going to pull the rear fenders a bit. I just copped an EastWood fender roller for cheap, so I am going to put that to good use. I plan to get another 1-2cm out of the pull once I can get over the lip on the Kumhos.

Yessir, made a huge difference. It was a little sketch at first cause the tires are really hard, but they softened up a bit. Like 2 years ago everyone was recommending NOT to run a 205 on a 9" wide lol. Anyway, I have a new-to-me Eastwood fender roller I am going to stretch the rear fenders out with. Hopefully I can get the edge on the lip and anohter 1/2" drop to lay out my kit...

Little mock up I did with all of my parts...
Let me know what you guys think. I have a few things left to do and car will go to paint.

Thanks for the feedback homies!!! I can't wait to get this thing done now. I got the dual fogs from a Toyota Land Cruiser. The lenses are kinda shitty, but I will throw a projector in there or something...
I usually wear a long rubber glove when working with the glass. Full breathing mask, beanie and goggles. Can't be too careful with that crap haha.

Gonna send the car to paint in Jan 2012 in a few weeks. Trying hard to finish on the kit now. I have a few things left to do plus some new over-the-top mods I may be considering. Hope I can kill it this upcoming year!

I have a bit of a dilemma. I want to run some chrome tail pipes, but as you can see from other pics, my exhaust port is shaved. I want them to be vip-esq. I have one example for right now, but I will post the rest of the pics up when I get home.

Yo guys, my car is in a hot mess right now. I don't have any pics, but here is what I have done:
-traded my dark gray leather interior with another stock for trade+cash(hopefully cash covers the build of the new stuff since I already have a set of Black Katzkins chilling)
-sidemarkers are sanded about 1/2" around to the bare metal
-rear wiper and hood in same condition as above
-Rolling with an OEM carbon fiber hood(yeah, yeah, I know)
-rolling on daily 18s so I can get new rubber fitted, plans include a bit of a stretch up front with 5mm spacers and extended lugs
-car goes to pain soon. Need to finish my tail pipe design and shaping of the rear bumper.
-car is being gutted next week
-rolling ghetto sucks, but it's only for a minute!

New additions while car is in paint. I cut apart a set of brand new OEM chrome handles from Japan and placed the grab parts inside of the OEM color matched housings. Will compliment the OEM stainless window trim well.

The full chrome handle is overdone and is too gaudy on most xBs, especially white. People don't really take enough time to think about their mods, they just buy stuff and bolt it on and act all Hella-JDM. I always prefer not modding something, to over modding something else. Got this idea from Crown vics and 90s Altimas/Acuras. My hatch handle is getting the bottom portion masked and the top will be color matched. The whole thing will then be cleared for a one dimensional chrome look/feel. There are a lot of guys going "stick-on-chrome-tapefrompepboys" crazy these days. Not going to happen on my car.

Looking good Joe! Quick question, did you mod your front crash bar to fit your kit?
Thanks!
My stock crash bar is still in place, but I had to flip it upside down and move it up. Normally there are 4 long nuts holding it on, but now only the top 2 go in the bottom holes if it makes sense. Anyway, keeping the crash bar was a must so I had to figure it out. LMK if you need some help with kit fitment or anything
