read the articles/government documents on importing vehicles. some are exempt, some are not. it has to be older than a certain number of years or have been inspected by the d.o.t. and passed all federal regulations to be street legal. just because ppl are getting away with it doesn't mean they can't come get it at any time. that's what these guys were doing and it blew up over one import company. you really can't be mad if you didn't do it legal. the problem here is that these skylines were thought to be legally imported by buyers.

From what Ive read its illegal with or without docs, bc there is a presumption that all skylines were illegally imported. If I was an owner I would start a petition and write my Representative. As petty as it may it could pour into other areas.

Here is the thing I hate the most. I know good lawyers that would back me up on this. But since I do not own one, I do not care. But If the DOT has a list of cars deemed legal to bring in, and the feds take the car I brought in with all legit paperwork.. their ass would go to court for sure. Can understand them taking it if you didnt pay the tax and duty on it

From what I understood from those articles was that some of them were on the legal list but then that list was changed and theb owners of those cars were SOL. This was in additon to the illegally imported ones. Fucked up situation.

Here man..

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/elig092210.pdf

General link: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/

Petition/Legalization: http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=NHTSA-2005-22654-0047 I don't know how accurate this is compatibility-wise.

Anyways,
This sucks for those that thought they were Legally buying one. Seriously RESEARCH and have your paperwork in order if you own or are going to own something this controversal. It's not like it's impossible to import one, if you want one that bad and plan to keep it/drive it etc. do it right (This goes for all vehicles you want to import).

This is true that they are targeting skylines.. Maybe they are after asian imports? I just read this article and it seems they are not seizing some European cars.

http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/03/show-and-display/?pid=772&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Index+3+%28Top+Stories+2%29%29&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=UniBul

FYI for those who wants to import cars..
"Anything that wasn't originally sold in the United States can't be imported if it isn't at least 25 years old. "

Why doesn't the government just let people pay $5k for a stamp that lets them drive like a collector car (3,000 miles a year) or something. Legalize it...

You sure about that?

"One basis for determining a motor vehicle eligible for importation is that it 1) is substantially similar to a motor vehicle of the same model year that was manufactured for sale in the United States and certified by its manufacturer as complying with all applicable FMVSS and 2) is capable of being readily altered to comply with all applicable FMVSS."

Ya that really sucks. Feds have bigger fish to fry and they are wasting their time and our tax dollars with this BS. The car pollutes a little more? Headlights point at the wrong angle? crash bar not up to U standards? Big Fk'n deal, go catch the real criminals. This is a joke, I'm just glad I live in a country where if the car is 15years old you can import anything. R33 GT-R just recently became legal. I'm just waiting for the JZS18 Crown Athlete.... only 7 more years LOL or maybe I'll pick up a JSX100 Chaser in the mean time :)
