Custom wheel question from owners
Would like ya'll input on this and your experience or trial and error.
Most wheel manufacturers provide an offset so possible buyers can determine if the wheel will fit their car. Nissan Altima factory I believe is 40et on a 16 x 6.5. So if an aftermarket company provides offsets I can gauge by how much I would possibly need for clearance on a wider with wheel, but this also would limit the amount lip I would be able to have. (which I would like 5" or 6" lip) because I have fwd drive.
If not provided an offset , how is a custom (vip modular, trafficstar, etc..etc..) wheel company able to determine the wheel will fit a particular car with just the width and height and maybe for instance if I would like a 5" or 6" lip?
Example: a 20 x 9.5 40et (MRR HR3) fits my car lowered on coilovers with only rolling the rear fenders (which I currently have and was only able to know they would fit by a previous owner who had the same set-up), but a 20 x 9.5 25et would be pushed to far out and would result in a major fender modification to my front and rear to have these even fit! So before purchasing, I would know not to even get a 25et unless I was prepared to do some major fender modifications.
So, how did you know if your wheels you currently own would even fit your car without previous knowledge from another owner or was it just a buy it and "make it fit". Which I really don't want to do or is this just a requirement when buying wheels without an offset spec?
Thanks for the help just trying to be more knowledgeable on fitment..Thanks!

Buy what you want for the look you want..then make them fit. That's probably at least 50% of us.

Off the bat, you won't get a 6" lip on any wheel. If you do, you have to do serious body work.
Your only chance would be on a wheel similiar to this
I am personally not a fan of convex wheels. If you want a flat face or slightly convex, you will get 3"-3.5" lip tops.
Wheel companies know because they do the work and measure. They don't give out this info because it would be helping competitors. Plus each car is different. If you are on lowering springs, your offsets wont be the same as someone who is on air suspension with stretched tires and maxed out negative camber.
This link wont help you with a direct answer but will give you the tools you need to figure it out easier.
http://www.1010tires.com/wheeloffsetcalculator.asp
Find out the width and offset on your stock wheels, measure the distance to your fender edge and see what you can fit using the calculator.
Keep in mind to measure your inner clearance, you dont want to rub a strut if your too wide.

I put 19x9, 19x10 +25 all around on my gf's 07 maxima and its slammed on coilovers. For the rears I cut the inner fender lip out and had to file down a bumper tab and screw about 25-30% off and it is flush....the fronts already have a flat inner from the factory...almost like a factory roll. I am sure I can fit 20x10 with +25 or maybe +20 with 235's, in the rear.
Just buy some used rims and tires and carefully measure...you may have to switch up tires and have someone help you roll. I learned by moderately getting lower offset wheels until it was where I wanted it.. This is my gf car so I didnt go extreme as she may curb the rims if they poke too much.

I was looking at these on an Infiniti M45..and it looks like he did minor fender work for the rears for the size of the wheels he has...far less than other rides Ive seen with wheels this wide? Wonder what offset he had???
Fronts were 20 x 10 5"lip
Rears were 20 x 10.5 5.5" Lip

Compared to Smitty, who I believe says he has 4" Lip up front and a 5" Lip in rear, but it would look like he had more fender work done compared to the above ride, to fit just the 5" Lip in rear?

seems like you're more worried about lip sizes than actual fitment. if that's the case, you're going to have to do body work if you want 5" of lip on anything. camber, ride height, and stretch are all huge factors as well.

also, keep in mind that brian's M (the first one you posted) is a platinum car, who is a body shop. who knows what kinds of crazy things were done to the fenders haha

Yeah I would like a 5" Lip or at the minimum 4.5" Lip..I know the bore on the infiniti and nissan are the same and it would seem their factory offsets would be too....I guess I would ask VIP MOdular, if they could do a 20 x ?? with a 4.5" or 5" Lip 4 wheels all around and I would just go with that. Situation where I wouldn't have anything to do with the front fenders, I could just camber to fit the rear and if I decided in the future to have a slight pull in the rear to eliminate any camber, I could.
I'm familiar with the stock m45/m35 and looked at one in person and it doesn't look like they did any mods to the front (looks like it isnt any camber either) to fit a 20 x 10 5" lip and the rear only a slight pull and camber to fit a 20 x 10.5 5.5" Lip, If im correct. by the pictures I would be able to fit a 20 x 10 5" Lip all around.

This is why I won't buy wheels with no offsets advertised.
Perhaps if enough people do so, they will realize they're losing (valuable) customers in their attempt to stop "helping out the competition"(??) and they'll start printing offsets again. I can always dream right?

Yeah, I'm not sure about the "helping out the competition" either. I figure it comes down to. If a customer likes a particular style or company. Even if vip modular, leon harditts, giovanni, lexani, mrr, conceptoneusa all showed their offsets..I would still go with the vip modular if price wasn't an option. just cause of looks and quality so.....
offsets are not going to determine whether I buy from one company or another, if the offsets are all available. It's buy what the style/look the customer wants..the major competition would be only if all manufacturers are producing the same style..then there you would have the competition regarding price.

Even trying to get 4" lip out of a 20" rim on a maxima or whatever is going to be hard... Like widebodyQ said you will need to get a convex style rim in order to go any bigger. The one he posted are more designed for clearing big brakes....but there are companies that do this convex style intentionally just for maximizing lip size and some just as a style. Usually alot of "DUB" looking wheels. I think that's wrong but others will think differently.
I think you should go with 19" which will give you some more room to play with offset/width wise therefore being able to get more lip. Also you actually might get more tire options since the sidewalls have more room to be played with. I'm talking about tire profile since that effects stretch also. Also look into what kind of camber adjustment can be acheived. If they sell arms/tophats/bolts that can get you more negative camber then you might get a few more millimeters...not a whole lot but it helps... Lastly see how far you are willing to pull the fenders without it looking silly. This should give you an idea of how much your car can take therefore give you an idea of what size rim can fit.
Anyways you are going to have to figure this out on your own car. I don't know of any maximas in this forum. I'd also suggest checking the maxima forums and go to the used rims section....check the specs and look at the pics with the wheels on the car. It could give you a base to start from and see how more aggressive you could go from their specs.

I was looking at the M45 above which has a 20 x 10 5" lip in front and a 20 x 10.5 5.5" lip in back. It looks like they didn't do any fender mods on the front/maybe sliight camber and a slight pull/camber in the rear.
I actually have a 2005 Nissan Altima....An Altima had the same wheels I had and stance, pics below (He has since changed wheels and is now riding on 20 x 10 38et), but the ones I currently have are 20 x 9.5 35et and lowered on coilovers. Fit with just fender roll and camber in rear. I would love to have 20 x 10 5" lip (VIP Modular VR01, like the above M45 has in front) for my Altima all 4's. Guess time will tell..

You had to roll and camber to fit a 20x9.5 +35, and you want to run a 20x10 with a 5" lip? Good luck. A 5" lip on a flat faced 20x10 is at least a -6 offset (assuming 0 face thickness). That's another 47mm on the outside edge. Hello widebody or -524059347650476 camber.
Y50 fenders are wayyyyy deeper than Altima fenders. Trust me, I have an 03 Altima, and my dad had an M35. Flush on a 3G Altima is damn near stock fitment on a Y50. I'm currently running 19x9.5 +30F +35R and I honestly can't go much more aggressive than that without major body work.

exactly what previous poster said....flat face wheel cannot get you that much lip with that high of an offset. like i said with 19s you have a better chance and convex face. kind of cheating

Maxima with a lot of lip on the wheels will be hard to do no doubt but I've always liked max's so I hope you pull it off

The 20 x 9.5 +35 on 225/35/20 Fits w/o rolling the fenders or cambering at stock height. But lowering it to where the fender is about .5" to .75" in rear required rolling and cambering. I could do w/o 5" lip..*LOL* and settle for 4.5".

I would think VIP Modular could make it happen with a 20 x 10 4.5" lip (Don't know about 5" Lip) This is the Altima on 20 x 10 38et (Conceptone wheels)..don't know the lip size though (found out it is 3.5" LIp so.) guessing could get a 20 x 9.5 with a 4" ? Any experts on lip sizes just by looking? *LOL* He's way lower than I would ride so...and he has full turns..riding on coilovers.

So, if Concept One can do wheels that fit I'm sure Modular (custom shop) could.*LOL* I hope.....
Was calculating on
http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp
Running
20 x 9.5 225/35/20 40et mounting surface to edge of rim extends 174mm and doesnt hit struts (factory), Im on coilovers so probably gain more room.
A 20 x 10 225/35/20 38et extends 177mm and doesnt hit struts.
look and saw a 20 x 10 14et would stick out 1.2" further than my 20 x 9.5 40et ..hmmmm...?

American wheel companies measure lip from where the 2 barrels meet and not from the face to the end of the lip. Is that wrong, not at all but its misleading to those just chasing lip size. The Japanese measure from the face to the end of the lip which is the part you actually see. Would anyone know this? No because no one is going to take a ruler to your lip either way.
Also some wheels are not flat, they are slightly convex to give you .5-1" of more lip that you can actually see. A flat face or concave face will give you less lip. Get a wheel which you like, dont get caught up in lip size or you will be behind in this scene

all this talk about lip size is backwards.. Concentrate on width and offsets... From there you can pick and choose whatever rim design you want that can get you the target lip size. Remember that even though 2 style rims from the same company with same specs won't always have the same lip size. BTW how are you measuring lip size? I hope from the flange like how it should be...
Also don't forget about pad size because that can gain lip.
Why not just call vip modular or whatever and see if they can do it.
I'll say it again... the key ingredient for your lip size goal is "CONVEX"
*LOL* - discovered this takes some effort to type

Just makes it more impossible to go 20s with 5in lip. Sell the car and get a better platform

Why do front wheel guys stagger with bigger wheels in the rear is there any gain or looks only. I don't understand

I agree, which is probably why I'm looking at a 4" Lip..
deedsfd430 was riding on a 20 x 9 4" Lip up front, which would be a shorter width than I currently have 20 x 9.5..

or 20 x 9.5 3.75" Lip for some reason his front lip seem deeper than the 20 x 9 4" lip above???? Is it just the pics? I thought it might be the offset, but the offset would only control how far the wheel sits from fender not the lip size..a 3.75" lip is a 3.75" lip and a 4" lip is a 4" Lip, If I'm correct.

looks only. but to be honest, a lot of body designs have that rwd "look" if you know what i mean, so to run the same sizing all around it looks off.

4in sounds more doable..

this thread is different. Usually "what offset" this one is all about lip...which of course depends on offset. backwards...

You're using examples of cars which don't share the same chassis and suspension as your own. The backspacing is different, the wheel wells are different, the fenders are different. Just find some wheels with reverse-in spokes which has already been mentioned since those will get you the most dish with weaker offsets. Measure your tolerances and then show us the results. No amount of talk or pictures will make this happen..you just have to do it. This thread is silly...

Well Br1anK's Fuga (M35) is rocking a 20x10 -14 super low pad 5" lip front and 20x10.5 -20 super low pad 5.5" lip.
he's on our Phantom Cup Kit suspension w/ -8 degrees camber in the rear. his rear quarter panel was jacked up and built this natural roll on the edge ... ( you can see so in the picture if you zoom in)

I wonder how many miles before he had to change his tires, if he rides low like that with the -8 degrees of camber..!!!

Probably flip them half way through then get twice the miles that's what a lot of guys do with camber to make tires last longer

why would someone who has spent at least 15k in aesthetic mods ask why FWD drivers stagger for looks. I don't understand.
