LS 400 valve cover or possibly other gasket leak, worth it?

Car is 133,000 miles. Like thr title states. Worth it? Easy fix? Not sure if valve cover gasket or oil pan gasket is leaking.

probably both, ive got like 100,000k and my valve covers are leaking along with transmission and oil pan gaskets, valve cover gasket looks like an easy change, havnt done it yet

It is definitely worth fixing to ensure proper function.

However, if you are not seeing considerable amounts of oil making its way to the ground and do not have oil on the valve covers – I feel it could wait. Any loss in performance would be a good indication to fix it as soon as you can.

You have had thoughts of doing this repair yourself, which is great. But a few of things you should ask yourself before you start: how mechanically inclined am I, do I have the appropriate tools and how much time can I allot?

It is not a very complicated task but it takes awhile (it cannot be done in a several hours without assistance). If you are going to do it yourself you may also want to check and adjust the valves. It would also be worth replacing the spark tube seals, especially if you see oil on the valve cover(s). While you have everything apart why not take some extra time to replace the plugs and clean up under the hood.

It wouldn’t hurt to get a quote from a shop or dealership. But if you choose to do it yourself just do your homework and take your time.

for both the valve cover i got quoted for $500. this is coming from 2 different shops and about the same price.

i got some of my friends to check it out and see what they think and they all concur that i should just wait it out for now and wait til it gets worst or degrade in performance. i got the car for really cheap and the vote is to ride it til it dies. which i dont agree.

I don’t agree with the vote either. The LS is a great sedan - refurbish it don’t destroy it.
