There is a vendor that used material called Plastiform, or something like that. It's what a lot of pieces are made from. They form hard once heated and can be ground on and filled with plastic filler or bondo.
I have used fiberglass for eyelids and what not. I would say lay down some of the double sided 3M tape(for depth) and then use painters tape over the whole lense(3-4 layers) for protection. It is really easy to work with, but can be a bitch to clean up. I like it over all tho. You can grind on resin with anything once it is hard.

I just reread my post and can offer a few other tips:
-Let the resin dry overnight and you will be able to draw on it with a sharpie or similar and then dremel or grind away.
-I would read up on fiberglass work a little, but do about 2 layers with standard thickness glass. It will make more sense once you read about it.
-You may want to practice on something cheap and not part of your car.
-I left some of the resin on some plastic overnight and it appeared to have hazed the lense some. You can let the piece sit about 2 hours until hard and pull off a layer of tape which will lift the new mold off. Then leave the piece alone overnight and let it fully cure.
On to pics:
It can be pretty fun. Hit me up if you need any tips. I can help a little. I am getting ready to do a system enclosure over my air set up soon.

Honestly guys, I just googled "DIY fiberglass" and read for a bit. I have done a lot of my own work and fiber glassing, while messy, can be really fun and offer huge areas of creativity.
