the j-unit cars i've seen are like a dub/vip hybrid. i'm pretty sure there are some magazines devoted to the/a similar style.

To say there is no difference between what we consider vip style in the states and what is currently hot in Japan, we are kidding ourselves. I don't see anything wrong with them referring to it as US vip style. If I seen those cars, I would assume that they are from the states.
Air +clean kit + wheels = done. which is what these cars are about. What we do is like 5 years behind what was cool in Japan which is why they are referring to it as its own sub-style

agree..In my opinion the cars that I see on the forum from the US and the VIP cars from japan are very different. The Japan cars for the most part seem to have way more wow factor as in deviating from the cars natural look were as the the US very clean, smooth details that work with the car......just like the "US glare style".

I wasn't trying to say that in a manner that took away from anyone's build.

When I said wow factor from japan deviating from the cars natural look I meant things like the car posted with the numerous vents on the fender, some of the AMG looking kits that don't really go with the car, camber that's so angled my son could use them to jump the car with his bike...

The US in my non professional opinion has a more wow factor in the way of keeping the car clean looking, kits that flow with the car and compliment the cars were as I think some of the cars posted from Japan use kits that take away from it........

cars for example like yours, pancakes, 33 flavors all has a wow factor that looks like it was methodically put together each piece made to compliment the other.....

you got 3 groups of people; those with the means and desire to duplicate whatever new trend pops up in japan, those with desire but without the means to do so, and those with no desire to do so whatsoever.

seems like everyone is quick to say "do you" but they still hold everything to the current japanese standard. personally, i'll be damned if i ride around in a florescent car that looks like it could be optimus prime's cousin. what's "cool" in japan now is whack to me and i honestly can't see how the transition was so easy for a lot of people. how do you go from the clean/luxurious style that was hot mid-200s to the outrageous late 2000s style without blinking an eye? my conclusion is that they are following a trend rather than building with their own style. that's cool, some people live their life jumping from trend to trend (see: hypebeast) but i'm not down and i'm not down with being referred to as a second class enthusiast because i have my own preferance. if clean and simple (well executed is a given) is watered down then f**k it, water is good for you anyway. you can keep the swiss cheese vents, fiberglass vultron kits, bug eye retrofits, etc. no way could i take myself seriously driving most current vipcar cover cars (from what i've seen anyway; haven't bought a mag since '09, and only one then, for lack of interest).

as far as this "new" "substyle", i've been seeing these magazines as long as i've been into vip. from what i can tell it is a japanese take on dub, not an american take on vip. the details are kind of fuzzy but names like "l.a. style" and "glamour" are thrown around. now think about it from a japanese perspective; are they more likely to be talking about a style created in america or are they more likely to be recreating our recreation of their style. seems kind of ridiculous to think the latter, and just another oppurtunity to bash what is popular over here.

no I get what you're saying. I was having this conversation with some of my Cali boys over dinner last night. All us old guys were talking about the trends coming and going (mostly Honda cause we grew up in that era in the mid-late 90's). We talked about what some people consider a build and what not. The trend that we see now, how things have changed, but things are looping back for the better.

US current trend (not all cars, just a lot of them)

step 1: buy the VIP starter kit (any "VIP" accessories that you can afford)
step 2: buy low offset wheels
step 3: pull the crap out of your fenders so they look like a hammered flat piece of metal with absolutely no body lines left
step 4: camber your car as much as physically possible (and call it some exotic word + the word flush)
step 5: install coils or air
Step 6: go to a nice place to shoot photos (parking garage, somewhere by a graffiti wall, etc) and do a photo shoot
Step 7: get featured on every stance blog that will accept you.

Japanese Trend:

Trying to take VIP to the next level "one upping" each other with gills on the fenders, custom crazy paint jobs, crazy bodywork and stereo etc... (reminds me of the late 90's early 2000 US widebody/conversion HIN show phase) I think it will get to the point where they ask themselves "what the hell was I thinking in 2011??"

Where I think it will head back to in a few years:

Exactly what OG said...back to clean, simple, yet detailed...build (see gato, bahc, exclusiveonez, 33 flavors builds, khanhdom, hell...even kingpin up in canada eh?!)

I don't see it as the Japanese making fun of our style, its more of a marketing strategy. Buying USDM parts is popular so by labeling their style kits as "US Style" people in Japan will think its cool.

Some people find the US style boring, lacking creativity and uninspired. Do what makes you happy

in the end CLEAN will always be around and the creativity and inspired transformer look will be in a junkyard with all the clean, uncreative, uninspired parts taken off it to be installed in the clean, uncreative and uninspired cars. Its been proven in history. Take a look at the 50-60's Barris cars as opposed to the creative wild show cars...which ones are still around? Late 90's widebodies/ conversion imports still around? LJ Garcia, you there?

US Style is embarrassing at best (just being honest). And I say that in reference to what the majority of people in the US do (purely bolt ons). Those of you doing it right know exactly who you are. Its just there are so many people trying to emulate the style, but not asking enough questions on what they should be doing..not what they are doing. The style is ever changing and it seems many people are stuck in the style as it was a few years back. I don't expect everyone to replicate the style to a T and it's ok if they do things in an older version of the style. Just remember, if you're really trying to keep up with the current style then be prepared to be committed. I welcome more people into this style/subculture but don't fake the funk or claim what you clearly aren't. Being honest and humble will get you far in this community. There are now many people here worth listening to and asking questions to, anyone new to the community should take advantage of this available knowledge.

There are now many people here worth listening to and asking questions to, anyone new to the community should take advantage of this available knowledge.

I agree.. and I have also fallen in the the catergory of "Typical US VIP" is years past with stockish body semi aggressive wheels and dropped. When I recently purchased my latest G50 I was a little shocked to see that US Style hadn't really changed from 5ish years ago (with some exceptions of course).

It takes a lot to build a car to the caliber needed to emulate a real VIP style. I just hope when the G50 is finished it will look as good as the glare style cars on j-units site!! It's sad that the Japanese version of US VIP is better than real US VIP (generally speaking).
Speaking for myself....I am tired of the bolt on stage of my car and I wanna start going the custom route, the only things holding me back right now are deciding what exactly I wanna do without coming off corny and keeping a clean look and building up the funds so I can execute what I wanna do.

But with that being said I think we should stop sweating Japan so much (still give respect ) and start doing our own thing

The new era of the US car builds / Crews bring out fresh clean rides from East to West i still feel that the tables will be turned in the future, and Japan will go back to Simple and clean after all one can only fit retro fit so much before the car looks its a maglite display car .
