Having a whinge about wheel sizes on the 2nd hand market

Feel free to ignore me, but:

What the hell?? :(
They're either -10 or +40. Why is it so hard to find ~+15-25 range.

I swear people here are into some crazy ass sizes, which is cool! But there's just no way I can get them to fit without being pulled over by the popo every day. They're getting Very Very strict with this sort of thing over where I live. :(
Rims sticking outside guards = defected = $$$ and more importantly TIME I don't have.

Then there's the other half of people with weak ass offsets pushing their rims out with spacers. What the hell? Why do you even buy rims that arn't remotely sized correctly? Spacers usually = extra load on your wheelstuds etc. Not saying it'll cause failures, but it's not what they were designed for. I'm all good with people slipping 3-5mm spacers in to get a tiny push, (though then the argument about slip-on spacers being fail comes in to play) but when you're adding 25mms what's the point?? You're just compensating for massively incorrect offsets, and paying for it with skinny rims. Skinny rims = skinny tyres = less grip. How am I gonna keep this barge on the road without sliding all over the place like a s15 if I run skinny rubber? Losing traction and doing snakies up the road on gear changes = not VIP!
And to make it all worse you end up with poor outer lip sizes. :/



I realize i'm going to get a hundred "just buy custom in the sizes you want" comments, but at the moment I can't justify the cost given the rest of the car isn't where it needs to be to be able to pull off beautiful rims. That is certainly an end-point, but at the moment, getting better fitting 2nd-handies is the plan.

Where do you find them? And why is everyone buying +40 offset rims?!

most wheels i buy come in weak specs, but that's the nature of some companies. i have no issues with running spacers, adapter, wooble nuts, or whatever it takes.

Just be patient, you will find something in the classifieds.

  If its a wheel thats still in production, just save up.  You won't have to deal with the last person's issues and you are sure they come in the specs you really want.

check other forums for lexus or G35/350z those guys usually always run around +22 offsets

the reason there are so many +40 rims out there is because of people like you (not meant to be offensive)  they cant justify the buying of new expensive rims, so they buy the +40 used rims and use the spacers youre talking about to make them fit..once they can afford new custom rims, they resell the old.

ALL the Jap imported wheels on eBay are high offset. I don't understand why. Who wants a set of beat up Eurolines in 8.5-9.5 +40?

the major source for used wheel importers is japanese junkyards from what i understand. could help explain the selection.

It would make sense. If they buy off private sellers they would have to charge ridiculous prices to make a profit.

Yeah and a lot of the jap cars promoting some company usually have relatively weak set up... especially if looking for a new'ish wheels in mint condition. That's my impression after a couple years wheels search over the yahoo etc. :shrug:

You name it.. US eBay, even YAJ which has plenty of private sellers, they're full of very Very nice rims in really weak sizes/offsets.
At the end of the day, the second-hand market is based on what people buy new. SOMEONE has to have bought them brand new from the manufacturer (at sizeable cost!) and requested them in +40. I just don't understand how there are soo many people who would do that... Who out there has ¥400k to spend on nice new rims, but has no interest in fitment specs and just uses the numbers on the stock tyre placard? Seems ludicrous to me

Decent sizes, but i'm anal about style too.. only really interested in a handful of rims. Makes it hard I guess?

I'm definitely In The Market. Have money on hand for the enterprise. Missed out on a set of rims I wanted last week.. so still looking hard.

Thanks heaps for the zilvia.net idea! :) Never thought to check there and you're correct - they do a sizeable trade in rims don't they!! Will keep an eye out and hopefully something pops up

if you buy 2pc or 3pc just relip/rebarrel them

"Cool" used JDM wheels are "no longer wanted in the land of the rising sun" wheels.  If the wheel is still a sweet design and come in nice offsets they are still expensive in Japan most times.  add the shipping etc and the wheel becomes too expensive used.  But you can get weak offset wheels on upgarage in cool designs for $300 bucks sometimes.  Supply and demand

Yeah....just get some beat up multi-piece wheels for cheap, and have them rebuilt to your liking :shrug:!!!
