looks like your third gear will be the same as my 4th, not so good. you'll probably want to start with a nico ecu or somebody else's tuned first gen ecu to raise redline a little more and get close to 300hp and tq at the wheels.
any nissan hub works, i used an s13.
Nice starting car. Keep your A/C you have 200 ft-lbs of torque from idle, it's not going to slow you down.

the pile on the left side of the car is all the old suspension. dropped about 100lbs off the front by removing all that shit.
worked on the rear a bit today, but the rears are still poking and the camber is maxed out, but it only looks like about -4 degrees at most. borrowing a fender roller tomorrow.

the rear fenders on this car are a BITCH to pull. i was gentle and took my time (8 hours), but the quarter panels told me to fuck off and dimpled anyway. glad i'm going on vacation for two weeks tomorrow. i'm exhausted.

go with the mazworx style adapter for your trans. You really want a spacer holding your clutch/flywheel on? Sounds sketchy.

what are the benefits of using the s14 suspension vs. the g50? i've always considered the uca type suspension superior. you got rid of the third link and the fuca correct? what is the range of adjustment using the camber plates? what damper did you use? the y33 camber plate was direct bolt in? very interest and right on time if it's a good upgrade.

The third link is where most G50 owners have issues including myself. The third link will basically hit the inner fender well. Let me know if that is a part you removed.

I got rid of the stock front suspension for weight savings, simplicity, and to avoid third member issues.
I actually ended up using s14 camber plates because y33's wouldn't have fit in the shock towers. I had to drill 3 new holes. I mounted the camber plates so I also will have some caster adjustment, but I need to chop some of the shock tower before I can adjust them.
I tried reusing the r32 dampers, but they are clearly about 4" short of what I need to feel "safe" driving with. I think an s14 damper should work fine. one of the dampers actually blew just from sitting in my garage. idk if it was from the camber, preload, or a freak accident.
so basically I pulled all of the stock suspension off and replaced it with s14 flca's, knuckles, endlinks, and coils. the stock iner tie rods work with the s14 outers and the stock swaybars and tension rods bolt up to the s14 flca's. I haven't tried to put the s14 knuckles on the stock flca's yet but I might when I get home from vacation just out of curiosity. so the only thing I had to modify was the shock towers. everything else bolts in.

i've noticed that most mcpherson apps use an inverted damper. i wonder if the r32 piston wasn't strong enough to support the car.
any idea what the camber is at with the plate in the 0 position? if it was in the ballpark one may be able to use a non-adjustable tophat and dial in the degrees via the lca adjustment.

yeah, that's what i figure caused it to fail. idk if being inverted would have helped at all.
the camber plates are centered in the shock tower and set at zero right now and looks to be more than 10 degrees. s13 flca's are shorter and will decrease the camber a bit. and slotting the lower mounts a bit more will help.

^^ good thoughts.
All else being equal an inverted piston design will definitely help. Also make sure the spherical bearing in your top hat(camber plate) isn't binding, if it is then i would say that is the root cause of the blown shock. Edit: well, if you have put the car back on the ground or weighted the suspension?

my pops got me a tool chest for christmas, which inspired me to go on a garage/tool cleaning/organizing rampage when i got home today.
tomorrow i'll be making a whole new mess pulling out the rear subframe and diff, removing hicas hydraulic lines, ps pump, and maybe start on stripping the interior.

so i bought a set of cr kai's for super cheap and was going to flip them, but i think i'm going to have to keep a pair for the front for track.

i finally started feeling good enough today to get back to work on the car.
the front shock bodies were too short and only 1.25" were threaded into the lower mount, which would be sketchy as hell to drive on. i talked to bc to see if they had any shock bodies that were about 3-4" longer than the r32's i'm running. they said the longest they had was only 20mm longer. total bs, i measured them today and they rear shock bodies are exactly 3" longer. turns out the bodies are same size and thread pitch so i switched the fronts with the backs. problem solved. fucking simple.
(front top)

(springs and tophats/camber plates switched over)
but there's still the issue of the "blown" strut, which it turns out didn't actually blow, the shaft snapped. hopefully it's repairable.
also i measured the flca's and the s14 flca's are indeed longer than the q flca's. using s13 flca's would be a better option if you don't want so much camber.
i was able to raise the front end about 3/4" which seemed to get rid of the perfect amount of camber so it isn't super insane anymore haha
i need a 5mm spacer for the front

is that indention from the strut piston? looks like the r32 style shock can't handle the mcpherson design. i wouldn't put the rears up front, you'll be beeging for the same thing to happen again.
how much shorter than the s14 arm is the g50? the s13 is ~.25" shorter than the s14 from what i've gathered. so which one is the shortest?

yeah. i think it was just wayyy to much camber and a couple other factors, but we'll see. there is much less camber now so i'm hoping it will be alright for the time being. i'm going to order some s14 dampers soon.

so it sounds like the g50 may be the shortest arm of all. maybe i'll just press a suitable ball joint in there.

and for the record, most of those companies that export repairs are u.s. branches (distributors) of jdm companies. most "budget" coilover companies replace/sell new dampers in lieu of repairing.

Megan is made by BC. I'm not saying that BC is the same as Megan, I'm just saying they are manufactured by BC.
Whats with all the drift G50 threads lately? It's too bad we didn't get Chasers here... G50's are a horrible platform for drifting all around.

Real life experience; Megan is not built as well, does not ride as good, and does not offer as many options as BC. If BC was not on the market you can bellieve I would be sticking with JIC or sourcing some other $2K+ option. BC performs on a level higher than the price point, with Megan you get what I'd expect out of a sub $1000 coilover.

Agree'd completely. Having driven on both, you're absolutely right. I've also seen both megans and BC's disassembled. There is quite a big difference in quality.

it's nissan and already v8... what's wrong with g50's drifting? wheelbase is only 3" longer than a chaser. i figure with the right setup it can drift plenty good.

are you talking about vh45's in general or 160,xxx mile v8's that haven't been rebuilt and suffer from weak valve springs?
i'm planning on making this engine last as long as possible, but picking up a spare vh to rebuild, get cams reground, and stiffer valve springs asap.

the motor is good, it just requires a lot of external maintenance at this age. better to freshen it up before you get into the rest of the build than have it die and get rid of a project in progress. tranny needs attn too, but that doesn't really apply to this thread.

fucking finallllllyyyyyy......
also got some 25mm spacers for the front (effective offset is now -16)
i have to do the hicas delete, cut out the rear wheel wells (to be tubbed at some point), and get an alignment and it should be road-worthy for the time being. my dumb miata blew a shock after only having the coils for 4 months so i'm going to have to daily the q while i have that crap warrantied. finally got the inverted dampers from bc. also picked up some 25mm spacers for the front. pulled it out of the garage for the first time in 3 months and snapped a couple pics. it's literally riding on the tires in the rear. i had to floor it to get it to move hahaha

well right now I have the inverted s14 bc dampers up front and they could go 2" lower so they're good. rear has the one unbent damper from the front and the less bent one from the rear. the r32 gtr front damper is about 2" shorter than the rears so they can go plenty low. I'm not exactly sure how low they go but the front dampers seem like they would do the best job since I have to sag the rears to be the same height.

Speed bumps dont stop anyone from slowing down. Well, maybe if you have a lowered car. Majority that have blown out struts who drive stock cars just blast over them. To the lowered community, they are economic business stoppers.

yes, there has been a change of plans. i played around with the front suspension trying to get the caster issue sorted, but like jzz30tt pointed out, there's no way to get it in spec without relocating the strut towers. my buddy who fabs modified chassis said we could do it no problem, but with their season coming up soon he'll be super busy till about june. i'd like to be drifting by then.
so this has to be put on hold for a little while. i'm going to set up my miata which is currently my dd for track shit and put the stock front suspension setup back on the q to dd it. i still have the r32 lower mounts and pillow ball mounts so it'll still be slammedish. i just need to find 90-93 third members.
until then...

the whole hub/knuckle/arm assembly was only $117 :)

i'm in the middle of moving right now and the biggest/hardest thing to move on my list was the q. so last night we drank a lot of beer and put the stock suspension back on the q. we were going to switch the rear too but i was feeling lazy so we just put the stockies on and left it that way. my buddy bravely drove it the mile to my new house. he said along the way the rear suspension settled which made the tires sit on the wheel wells. good thing it was raining out or else it would have looked like he was doing a burnout the entire time.
my neighbors probably think i'm a meth head now that this is sitting in my driveway.

so today i pulled off the rear knuckles so we could push the bullshit hicas bushings out and replace them with the alu. ones that came with the spl kit (yes, the spl z32 hicas eliminator kit works). my buddy went to town on them hahaha
got one side all pretty and bolted back together (just didn't bolt up them up to the strut tower since the driver side knuckle was still being worked on)
i started to work on the other side then noticed this little fucker's twin disappeared into thin air... or my dog's stomach... searched everywhere and couldn't find it :-/
went ahead and started putting the knuckle on. yanked the axel and bent it a little to put it in the hub and heard a loud pop. did i really break a beefcake axel with my hands? i don't think a rwd car axel is supposed to bend this much or rotate separate from the rest of the axel. gotta pull it apart tomorrow and figure out wtf to do.

actually, the paint looks pretty terrible up close haha this used to be an san francisco car so the bumpers are all scraped and there are door dings all over the place. and i don't think the previous owners washed it more than once a year. also there was some bondo work on the rear drivers quarter where it meets the bumper that's all rusted now it split when i did the pull. looks like garbage. but the wheel fitment looks pretty nuts up close so that's cool hahaha
i'm going to do all the body work once i pick up a kit... and then promptly ruin it by hitting cones and walls and cars.

when i was pulling the fender it would either bow out at the back or at the front. i bowed the front, but i guess from turning the wheels it bowed the rear out instead? i'll have some time in a couple weeks to do some more body work and stuff. trying to find some overfendrs that won't be too hard to make work on the rear? -5* of camber in the rear is killing me.
thanks!

hey, anyone tried fitting overs from another car on the rear of a g50? thinking r32 (gtr-style), r34, or fc3s overs
might work with some fiberglassing and massaging. this probably won't happen till i start drifting the car because i'll be running less camber and bigger tires. just looking for some input.

haha 45t
I dunno man.. I would run it like that haha I have neg 5 in rear also.. but honest man.. I hate rolling fenders with a roller. after using a hammer and dolly you can shape a true curve in the fender so it works with the wheel shape. I would do this over fender add on. It will be just as time consuming.. but! make a mold of it with fiberglass in case you wreck and you can glue them on haha.
I say all this cause going back to 326 power g50 he was drifting was retarded and looked good doing it.

yeah, meth heads removed the q for whatever reason and i haven't gotten around to removing the rest haha
i've used a roller, a hammer, two scissor jacks, cut off wheel, grinder, tin snips, and a lot of heat gun heat.
i know i'll be able to make them smooth again with some more time spent on them, but then the problem is that with like 1* of camber the tire is going to hit the pulled part of the fender. i need some box style overs so that there will be space for the tires and wheels to tuck without rubbing.
definitely would make a mold of the fender. also going to make one of the kit if i am feeling ambitious enough to make one fit this winter.

not a fan of those fenders. molding around the handle looks goofy. the fc overs bulge lower so the handle won't be completely sunken in.

the issue i see is those are all coupes. they will overlap the door.nothing a little custom work won't fix, but if you're just taking about bolt on flares they're not all that complicated anyway.

yeah, i'd cut them where the door opens. i'd have to fiberglass over the gas door opening and cut my own and cut out a spot for the handle. and i'd have to chop off the rear where it wraps around. these are the overs i'm talking about.

yeah... it's not going to be and easy project. before ordering anything i'm going to try to see if they can measure some dimensions for me. i just want something that has the basic shape i want to start with instead of starting from scratch. i won't cut into anything until everything is completely right and figured out. if all else fails i'll just do some sort of insane retarded roll until i inevitably stuff the car into a wall.

started on the driver side and found this under the air box. it had been missing for a few months haha hope it enjoyed the ride

after replacing the plugs the car is still being an asshole. gotta find someone with an odb1 code reader for this shit.

hahaha mine are too fucked and dimpled. only thing to do is chop/weld from a donor chassis or modify some overs. i'd rather have overs... i need a wider rear track since the front is already 14mm wider on stock fenders and will be even wider when i mod the flca's.

it sucks pretty bad, but meh... i have not. fuck i need so many tools it's not even funny.
trust me.. you can get it to work.. mine looked like that mid flight with the hammer

I got a CEL and a miss fire with a battery that wouldn't get out of the low 11v range, all was gone with the new battery.
Over fenders would be sweet.

did a little cleaning and polishing
reseated the valves and put the new valve springs. went up to 95lbs from the stock 50lbs so it won't have valve float issues at higher rpm's. the heads are all back together now.
we just gotta measure the crank bearings before ordering some new ones before we can put the bottom end back together and the it'll be good to go.
