doback builds an ls430
Wheels just came in today, decided to relax on my day off from school and work and bs around the house and make a little build thread, which will be a slow one....but slow and steady wins the race right?
day1
and how I have been driving it -- rolling around chicago for wekfest.
Today - the wheels arrived so I did a quick test fit....unfortunately front pad doesnt clear calipers, so I am waiting to find a spacer to test fit....then the fun begins.
Sizing is 19x11 et1 and 19x12 et1.....now I am starting to look for used upper control arms to mod or replicate for adjustability....needs a little camber.

Anyone run more than -5* up front daily? :giggity:

10mm spacers did not suffice, it will need 15mm spacers to clear calipers. Now to find 15mm bolt on spacers.
So if my math serves me right, with the 15mm working like it should, the fronts will be 19x11 et-14 effective.

So today I got a little time, and some spacer love from martin. Wheels clear calipers and as the pictures show...I have less than 2" to fit them, without having really pulled the fenders (excuse this fender, it was victim to 5 passengers and a full lock turn.....)

so all day at work I was searching minkara and found some interesting stuff from 326 power...they have a 'demon celsior' control arm lineup. Looks like this is what I will get my arms to look like, thankfully I found a good fabricator locally that can do it for me. I just hope they look this good.
My question is...does anyone know where to get balljoints like this ? I may be searching more.....

real weird, my ex and my brother in law's family are from around that way.
Its like....7 hours? depending where you go, im right in dc, so its the top of VA.
Hopefully the arms will be done around november or so, depends how backed up the guy is with current jobs. I am also now looking into shortened knuckles, again 326 power and t-demand have recently started shortening celsior parts similar to what CubanGS has.
So much to do, so little used parts to get my hands on to mod....ok back to searching for suspension bits.

You trying to keep the car on the road during the build? If it's not that important, just pull the knuckles and take 'em to your local metal/cnc shop. It's only a couple hours job, I got charged for 3 hours / 40€/hour when my knuckles were shortened and reinforced. Although it took them 3 days to do it =)

Juzzo, that might be something that goes on the list this winter. Depending if I can get a car to drive or some time off from work and get them modded, then I would do that sooner than later.
How much were yours shortened?
No new info really, except for picking up arms and getting ready to send for fabrication. Tore the equips apart to swap faces around possibly powder coat barrels as well.
Hopefully I will have something cool to post once school ends and I get some more time to myself.

I had the shop chop 38mm off. Could have or actually should have gotten 'em shortened more, but didn't have any wider masking tape at hand when I marked the cut point... With 20" fronts I could have easily gone -50mm

well, for now stock body, but i will be shaving and pulling for clearance.
Once the arms and wheels are on and the stance is settled im just going to get exhaust work. I graduate in the spring and need to get a couple things squared away first, before the next round of mods.
Just looked at my work valve stem seals, two are a bit dry rotted and will need replacing.
Besides that, VSC/CEL just popped on.....:saiyancrunks: Doubt its anything bad, gotta go scan it now.

Jimmy - looks like the arms from hendrik are a no go, I will be waiting for battle garage now....[/QUOTE]
hopefully you can get them arms by may.
So I started working a little on the car and lowered it back down now that winter has ended. I opted to do the hole in the shock tower for clearance, so heres a few pics since people always want to see how its done.
Then I cut a guide hole the point where the control arm was hitting, i chose the center point but later looked that i could have moved the hole a few millimeters inward.
Then the moment of truth, I started cutting in.
And its through! (after wiping down the perimeter)
And how it looks after everything is back in.
After driving the car for a 2 days, I still have some knocking and found out its from a supporting brace hitting the arm from riding so low static, so this weekend I will be tackling the removal of this brace, undercoating it, then replacing lower balljoints and trimming liners more. My goal is to ride really low with little to no rubbing. =)

I had the same problem, but I just shortened the steering knuckles... problem solved. + the suspension components are in a better angle because of that, only thing is that it will delete some camber.

I am considering this route, i looked at cutting the bulkhead this weekend when I did my balljoints and undercoated my hole. I remember you said it was pretty cheap and I finally found someone to fab and powder locally ( I think at least).
Trimmed my liners up front, at 3 threads from all the way down on BC's, I dont rub, except on fenders at lock.
Wheels. Refitted, poking 1.75" up front. Choosing my route, not sure if I want to relip fronts or just camber.

If your going to just camber them in without fender work, you'll need to get ~4 degrees of camber from the upper control arm. Shouldn't be a problem with adjustable uca's...

Doback I notice you have almost maxed out your BC coilovers. Are you running bags in parallel with the coilovers? Are you completely opening up the preload? I assume you are on the regular BC coils not the extreme low version, but the base would only go to a max until you need to start playing with the preload. Running into any major bouncing issues? I am planning to start turning down the preload so i can sit lip to fender, but pretty concern about taking out the preloads.
Other than that pictures!

No bags, it rides great for this height. Rears are completely down, shock body and preload. I actually enjoy the ride with the coils set at 8 for dampening. Fronts have 3 threads left on the shock body, preload has not been touched yet. I want to tuck rim so I probably will have to get bc's shortened shock body for the rear.
Have you cut the uca hole up front? you need to do that, but if you go lower, you will need to trim the bulkhead because it will also start to hit.

Wow props on getting rid of the preload. Haha I was debating on that for sometime. I actually want to get my rear lower. The fronts has some more to go before losing preload, but my fronts are at a good height. Just heads up, the extreme low bc's has a shorter body, but it would only allow you to go an inch lower overall. I would suggest drop blocks in pair with the extreme low bc's if you plan on achieving more than an inch drop. If not it would be a cheaper route to go with the bc's extreme low in the rear since it is only going to cost you 1/3 of the price of the ss blocks. Only reason why I still need my preload is that I am going with a poking lip style, so without the preload my rim would definitely taste my panel real good.

"extreme drop" is just a name for +2k spring rate, - 20mm damper length. if you're buying new dampers anyway you could specify more than 20mm shorter.
with the lower perch snug you stilll have no preload, lowering the perch doesn't change that. what it does change is the amount of available travel, and therefore an increased risk of bottoming out the damper.

it varries from car to car. i've ordered 40mm shorts, and am trying to do a set 60mm+. it has to be sent to r&d and ok'ed. you may also need to change out your springs for shorter ones depending on how the setup comes together.
