NZ Sentia HE Build

Hi all,

I thought I would start this thread in the right place… (rather than the introduction area)

So I bought this 1997 Mazda Sentia HE about four months back.

Here is the just bought picture. Stock standard.
Forum image

I found an old mazda cappella / Rx-2 Antelope badge which I bought. This turned out to be the right size to mount on the front grill. I really like it fitted as it is a really un common badge but still keeping with the mazda theme. (pictured is the badge before it was fitted on top of the moulded mazda logo)
Forum image

Then I wanted to de-badge it to it making the rear look wider. Also these are not too common in New Zealand so it just keeps people guessing what car it is.
Forum image

I managed to get a good deal on tints and install.
Forum image

I wanted to drop it and get the wheels at the same time but due to funds I just got the wheels first. I went with 19" 9.5 all around SSA G-Force wheels.
Here is a pic of the new next to the old before they were fitted.

Nice. It's nice to see another Mazda owner up here. I have Millenia or xedos that I am trying to build up myself.

Thanks bro. It's my first Mazda and have enjoyed it so far.. have you got a build thread on your Millenia? I had a quick look and it looks really tidy. Would be interesting to see how it turns out!

Nah I havent really done anything to it yet except Belezza curtains, and hids. The clear coat came off the hood back when we had storm here a few moths ago, so I have to paint the hood first. I'm doing the inside first then working the outside, plus I keep finding myself going back and working on my Mazdaspeed protege.

New Springs

Ok so finally got the car lowered. Took it into the guys at MTS ( http://MTSP.CO.NZ/) and they quoted me $399 for springs to be made up and installed. So they did that for me yesterday and I picked up the car this morning. The front is a lot lower the back not so drastic. He said that it is now as low as it can go without shortening the shocks. Which I might do in the future, but this looks better for now. I am impressed with them though. Everyone else quoted me around $600 and some would have needed the car for three days because they had never seen it before. Which was crazy... No point in paying extra for someone who doesn't have previous experience with a sentia.

CAR IS VERY DIRTY IN PICS. Will clean it when I finish work today.

So front is heaps better, I don't think I had any other pics of what it looked like before posted on this thread.

Thoughts and comments are welcome. Keep in mind this is just a cheap project car for me before I head overseas next year. Affordable summer cruising if you like. :)

Cool will have to look for it when I get a sec, mines not overly VIP but to be honest. This is just the best site with the most constructive feedback I have come across so I joined and started typing :)

I just love seeing people getting cars and personalising them so they are unique. Theres a lot of satisfaction in that.

Better quality pics.

My girlfriend took some better quality pictures this weekend.

I am glad I didn't go any lower for now as my front is scraping on a lot of driveways... and the majority of you won't know but New Zealand roads are terrible. :(

Next thing I will do is roll the guards as my front is catching sometimes.

Rolling Guards

So I was having a problem with my car the past couple of weeks which was causing the rear of the Sentia to slide out (not in a good way) when going over bumps at any speed in excess of 40kmph.

I finally managed to get my car taken in for a wheel alignment to hopefully fix this problem. Get the car back with wheels now at zero camber... The tie rod needed adjusting and this fixed my problem.

Now with zero camber the first time since putting the wheels on and lowering my car I now have the problem of hitting the guards. Fronts always kinda rubbed on bad angles but now the rear was scraping due to body roll at nearly any speed. :S

Booked in with Precision Wheels on North Shore and got it sorted out.

It cost $35 per guard and I needed it done quick to save me ripping my tyres apart.

Heres a pic.

I will buy my own guard roller in the future but needed it done quick. These guys managed to book me in for a Saturday.

Trying to get a hold of these adjustables.

My rear shocks are on their way out, I got told by one place that they would be like $300 a corner to rebuild. Then I would still have standard shocks :(

So If I have to spend money. I am going to upgrade.

Found these JIC adjustable shocks on Japan Yahoo auctions

Forum image

I now just need someone who can bid on them for me and ship them to me in New Zealand.

Any recommendations welcome.

Oh and I am really missing driving a manual. So if anyone wants to donate an engine and manual gearbox let me know. haha Then I can make this build something more exciting!

Suspension

I went for my WOF the other day and everything passed fine except my left rear shock. Which was leaking pretty bad.

With Sentia's being pretty uncommon I needed something fast.

I managed to borrow a shock from my friend and fellow Sentia owner Alpha. Who also has a build thread on here. http://www.vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13364&page=9

I have a couple of options on what to do now.
*Get a new shock made up to replace the one that is leaking.
*Upgrade the lot to adjustable suspension. (upgrading the handling and more low :) Also peace of mind knowing the other shocks aren't going to give up on me at any moment. )

Ok so I'm looking for adjustable suspension for my car. Have a guy in Japan looking out for stuff for me, and I am constantly checking yahoo auctions. I also have MTS on North shore, looking into what they can make up for me.

So I'll save up and when I finally get the suspension I will have another problem.

THE DRIVE WAY

Here's my predicament.

Forum image

Its a pretty crazy angle and its to stay that way. It's like that to prevent storm water running down into our house and flooding the place.

Heres my current low.

Forum image

So I guess it will all have to wait till I get the adjustables. But maybe I will make up a ramp of some sort so I can drop further :)

Its a pretty crazy angle and its to stay that way. It's like that to prevent storm water running down into our house and flooding the place.

Heres my current low.

So I guess it will all have to wait till I get the adjustables. But maybe I will make up a ramp of some sort so I can drop further :)

Haha I know that, I've tried every angle. Still a crazy arse drive way. Sometimes cars park on the bit where you would go on the grass. So can't always rely on that. Lets see how it handles when more low arrives. :)

While I save up and wait for the right adjustables' I keep playing with the idea of having the Mazda badge back on the back..

What do you think...?

With or without.. I do like that often people don't know what kind of car it is... but yeah..

I prefer the badge on. I debaged mines but ended up putting the badges back on. You should change your interior bulbs to LEDs too. Looks really nice inside with the cool blue led bulbs.

Thanks for the suggestion. I trialled a bright blue bulb in the side of the door but it wasn't cool or "arctic" blue. So will try find the correct ones. The blue I tried looks too cheap boy racery..

I won't put the sentia and mazda (word) badges on. Simply because I reckon it makes the back look wider without them.

I got a spare pair of front and rear lights last weekend, so will try and do some mods to those.. :)

wood grain makeover??

Not really an update, But I was playing with some woodgrain vinyl adhesive I have. I thought I would try it on my old centre console piece. What do you guys think?

Forum image

The photo's don't do the original dark wood grain any justice with the reflection. I have re vinyled my old car's interior before. Not sure if I want to do it again...

Also here is a pic of my car pretending to be able to get into our garage.

Reconditioned JIC suspension fail

Well after last weekend, which I was really excited about. Alpha and I got the rear adjustables in and went for a test drive. Only went up the street and only got to 20km/hr max and the shocks where making awful noises.

I had to drive up north that Saturday night so Alpha and I put my old shocks in, which felt like new ones compared to the JICS.

I ended taking the suspension down to Autoline in my lunch break and Shane (who was extremely helpful) tested them and said something was very wrong.

We decided to open them up and found that the company that rebuilt the JIC's used Holden Commodore inserts which where opened up. shortened. then welded back together and over filled with gas. They where so badly done Shane couldn't believe it. The company also painted them black as well which was weird...

I still wanted working coilovers so I asked Shane if there was anything they could do.. He referred me to Russell from George Stock just down the road.

Russell was super helpful, I explained what I had just learned from Shane

We took them apart again. He was shocked (no pun intended) at the shoddy job that we found. So much so that he said that these inserts would have never have worked properly.

He then helped me find a solution to get new inserts. Being a Sentia. there weren't many options. But he quoted me about $350 to $400 a shock with custom inserts. (properly made of course)

So now I'm stuck. I have spent a lot of money on the reconditioned JIC's only to find it was a big waste. And I will have to spend about $1400 to get them rebuilt. Thats ontop of the $1200 I have already spent!

BALLS.

I'm broke now, and Hardparked is this weekend.

Guess I won't make it there superlow. :(

Yeah bro, I would have bought new ones if they weren't $4000. But Sentia is just that kind of car that you have to make do. The guy I bought them off is replying to emails and is really angry that the company that he got to rebuild them did such a shit job considering what he paid.. (he sent me the receipt)

So maybe I will see something out of it. Here's hoping.

If I wanted to blow $1200 this quick, should have tried my luck at the pokies.

Ok so here are the beans... the guy I bought them off has been such a good dude. He has refunded me the money so I can put that money towards getting them properly rebuild by the guys at George Stock.

Pay pal messaged me to say the payment should be coming through tomorrow. So when it does. I'll book em in and get them done.

I am way too excited.

I am amazed at the level to which this guy has helped me. I think a lot of people these days would have just ignored my emails once they found out the suspension wasn't working properly.

But this guy is a lifesaver. I would have been about $1400 out of pocket otherwise. He is now out of pocket unfortunately, as he did spend a fair bit to get them rebuilt himself. (sent me receipts to prove it)

Well,

I will update once I have them rebuilt as I don't think there is too much else to say.

Ok so got the suspension rebuilt. New race inserts, as no others would work.
Am yet to fit them, I will get them in this weekend.

See how high she sits. Then measure up the drop I want. Take them out and back to the shop for adjusting. These inserts can have limiters so we can achieve a captive drop without using keeper springs... Well Lets just hope I can get her low enough and still have enough travel to be legal.

I got talking to a friend at work after showing him the new low in the front. He suggested a sneaky sticker bomb I hadn't thought of yet.

The license plate surround. Oh by the way. This isn't a simple two screw job. For some reason they decided to mount it underneath the two tail lights. So they had to be removed before I could get the rest off. I thought there was a last bolt up the top that I couldn't find but turned out to be a pop clip. Just pull. Although I hate doing that when you don't know. It might still be bolted somewhere and something might snap. :S

Anyway enough rambling.

Evidence.

Please note this is just a temporary thing as stickers are super easy to get off.

Tell me your thoughts.. I know it's not VIP. But my car isn't overly VIP anyway. IMO.

I am thinking when I am sick of it. Painting the surround satin black, but keeping that chrome strip up top.

Tell me your thoughts.. I know it's not VIP. But my car isn't overly VIP anyway. IMO.

I am thinking when I am sick of it. Painting the surround satin black, but keeping that chrome strip up top.

Haven't got a lot to post as my spacers still aren't working out. Will have to go 20 or 25 mm.

But I have been playing with some ideas.

Tell me what you think.

Alpha gave me an old non facelift grill of his recently, and I had some time off work so I had to do something...

:)

Pre coated it

After a few coats...
Satin black can spray.

I know it's not VIP but I was thinking of wrapping this car in Satin Army Green.

With Piano black accents and obviously something done with the wheels..

What do you all think?

Hey bro, not sure. I wouldn't think so. But yet again everything else with the HE and HD swaps. Would probably ruin the lines on the car if it did fit on.

Every thing has been certified too. So now it's fully road legal in New Zealand.

Want less under car gap, but can only really achieve that with 18's and / or a body kit.

Bodykits probably not going to happen. But some crazy 18's might.

Anyway, it's ready to legally cruise for this summer so I am happy.

I am thinking maybe a matching dark green the same as the rest of the car. instead of the flat black.
This was only vinyl though so easily removed :)

Woah been awhile since I've updated this thing. Car has had some pretty big changes since!

First of all sold the wheels.

Forum image

Was fun driving it on the stock 15's

Still looks good I reckon.

Then I decided to buy these.

Forum image

17x8jj ET6 (et -19 with the spacers)

Three piece wheels, made in japan with "rawlings" on the centre cap. I believe they are Enkei lip and barrel and one off or small run of the faces.

They look like a lot of wheels but have 29 bolts which isn't common along with having a lower offset than most of these types of wheels due to the rear of the faces design.

Forum image

So I test fitted the fronts. with some 235's

Forum image

Forum image

Forum image

Tyre needed stretch so switched to 205/40R17's

Still might go to 195/40R17s front then widen the rears.

Front's now back to being low and need to drop the rear to match

More fun stuffs happening but will write about that later.

Finally moved into a place with a garage.

So now I can work on it more often!

Finally tried on the rear bumper.

Not a fan of the mesh and holes. Might have to fill those in. (also new exhaust will be happening)

A big fan of how the front's looking.

Still need to cut guards.
weld stuff and one day have a partly completed car :)
