W140 500SEL - New Member - NC

Hello all, 

Name is Chris and I'm new to both the board and to VIP cars in general. Back when I was young ( late 80's) going on size bigger wheels and limo tint was considered "baller status". A lot has changed... An in a good way. 

I just picked up a two owner 92 500SEL with 83k on the dash. I have a bit of electronic work to do to get it back to factory fresh, but once that's complete, the mods will begin. 

First question I have for the forum is about body kits. I know Junction Produce makes a killer kit, but I was hoping to find something that looks as good but a little easier on the wallet. Any suggestions?

"easy on the wallet" does not apply here. pay to play is the name of the game, even if it's been lost in translation lately. either spend the bucks or live without it. please, whatever you do, please [I]do not buy a knockoff[/I]  because the real deal is out of your range. you do not need a bodykit to have a nice car anyway. honestly, for the w140 chassis all the "vip companies'" parts are outdated. if it was me i'd be searching for some period correct brabus, lorinser, etc. same look, more authentic in my eyes.

Thanks fo the advice on both respects. I agree whole heartedly on what your saying. Having said that, I've also learned that just because its expensive, doesn't necessarily make it the best. That is the reason I'm inquiring. I like having the best of everything no matter what platform. However, if I can save a buck here and there, I'm all about it.

Welcome .....  There r only 3 body kits for w140 that I know of ......junction,fabulous,wald.
Of course there is lorinser,amg and brabus
All r 3-4k range.....trying to get a used one is almost impossible....someone on the forum had a fab kit for sale with exhaust.....
Any plans for suspension?.....GL

Thanks for the info. Yes, I do have plans for suspension, but have no clue which way I want to go. Any suggestions?

admiration also makes a 140 kit. out of the japanese options it's the best imo.
 
based on some of the stuff you posted i think your best bet would be not to make any serious moves for a little while. no offense, it just takes a little while to really get a feel for this stuff and develope your taste. when you pot a lexani, mrr, and a work wheel that let's me know that you're still kind of all over the place. take your time and do it right once. a lot of cats jump in and spend a lot of cash, then end up redoing everything when they come into their own.
 
as far as suspension, just like any other car, your options are open. unlike evey other car, pretty much everything for the 140 will have to be custom.

Welcome to the forum! I heard on late model 92' you will need to replace your wiring harness due to the crappy material it was made out of. Other then that i cant wait to see what you got in store.

Your absolutely right. I do need to take some time and gather my thoughts before rushing into anything. I'll have plenty of time to do so after getting the bill from the mechanic on just the mechanical issues with the car.... We haven't even started on the electrical yet...LOL

Thanks, and yeah I'm now finding this out. I have been prepped for this extent of work, but I was hoping to avoid it if possible. The only good thing to come of this is that my 20yr old car will be virtually brand new by the time I'm done fixing everything. In turn will make the perfect platform to VIP.

Well after reading those two links, I'm definitely partial to hydraulics. However, my head is spinning from all the information that those threads contained. I'm going to have to read them a few more times a piece before it really sinks in. 

Having said this, I'm really impressed with this forum, the vast amount of knowledge, and the willingness to help the noobs!

I see the w140 having the best option when it comes to suspension. since the spring and shock are separate it is easier to do with a air bag. Dont have to spend huge money to buy a strut bag either. Also the easiest if you want to go static too. There is a lot of custom spring and shock makers out there too. since the shocks are close to what a lot of mini truckers use for a short throw, you can obtain those, and measure your spring dia, and height and get a custom spring made with a coilover style base. Much like the G35 and 350z m35 f50 etc
