Early Vs Late Y33 Q45- I like the both can't decide though

Ok as I am learning more about these cars, seeing the 97-98 and 99-01 models can be found around the same price now.. Just thinking which one I like better..

I really like the trunk on the early model since they have the lights on them, just looks more complete imo.. but then the later model has HID and that analog clock and a little more safety refinements?  

But then having a 2000 year car would be cool so i could get out of the 90s lol (most of my cars been 90s)

Any other big differences between the early and late models? and which one do you guys prefer (your opinion is fine)

I personally am looking for a 99-01 model because of certain features such as the HID lights with seperate high beam (aftermarket HIDs in pre-99 models would scatter more). I also like the standard rear shade and the Touring package extras. However, I do prefer the 97-98 model trunks because like you said, they just look more complete. 

Overall, it seems to come down to what options you are looking for and what you are trying to do with it. Someone feel free to correct me, but if you go with coilovers or air, it wouldn't matter what suspension you would have because it would all be ripped out anyway..

its all personal preference ..i too like the 97-98 tails...but most of the things u guys are talking about can be retrofitted to the 97-98 and vice versa....so if u dont mind spending a lil extra $$ and doing some work i would say find one with low as possible mileage and go from there

The glass sunroof was a major selling point for me as well. My brothers E36 has the metal sunroof and i cant understand it.. Sometimes i like to pull the shade back without the top being all the way open :biggthumpup:

good info.. seems like finding a 99-01 would be better than trying to source out stuff to the earlier model. Later model trunk would probably grow on me.

99-01 had the glass sunroofs......and a couple of members on this site retro'd the 97-98 tails on their 99-01's........so its all on you as to what direction u wanna take

I have had both a 97 and 2 99's. I like the 97-98 trunk, but everything else from 99-01 like glass sunroof, adjustable level hid headlights, analog clock, electric sunshade, adjustable rear headrests. Also 99-01 have painted lower body

yeah if i was to start over i would get a 99-01 and just retro the tailliights

The only thing I like about the 97 style is the trunk, the rest the 99 wins by a mile.

99-01. am i biased? mmmmmm no... i was thinking about getting the 97-98 when i first got my Q just because it was cheaper. but when you look at the details and the extras i'm glad i went with the 99-01. if it's the tail lights that you want to change out thats an easy fix. rather than buying an older one, changing the sun roof, the rear deck, the back seats, the clock, the headlights etc etc.

Definitely 99-01 and I liked the earlier taillights better at first but after seeing a few really done up I prefer the newer tail end as well now.

What is different about the backseats? (this is something I didn't know changed lol)

the 99-01 back seat has adjustable/removable headrests, and 97-98 doesn't

Just do what a lot of us did... get a 99-2001 and swap the trunk from a 97-98 on it. Done and done.

Everybody does the 97-98 trunk, so I wanted to go left and do a 99. Been happy ever since. I wish I would looked for an anniversery addition though and get one w/ a wood grain steering wheel and maybe heated seats

How come some of the taillights have a clear turn signal lense and others have that yellowish film? I want to tint mine and put chrome/amber bulbs or leds in them but I dont know what to do about the yellow film.

Amber bulb and bucket in the taillight has been removed

Yea you can jus remove the ambers tint inside 
but I recomend doing it to 97-98 tails over the 99s. 
The white/clear is better/cleaner on the 97-98s

So basically the 97-98 directly drop into the 99 taillight space? I found a few totalled 97/98s on craigslist I might be able to pull some tails from..

I thought u had to get a 97,98 trunk also because of the inner lights?....correct me if I'm wrong

But were talking about just the outer taillight correct?
So the 97-98 is the same fitment for the 99-00...sweet!
Always wanted to clear them out and wondered how. Looks cleaner IMO

Yea I was jus talkin about the coners. Those will fit right in. 
I was suggesting using the 97-98 lights to go clear instead of the 99s because the 97-98s have a cleaner/whiter white/clear

Awesome, yea I was referring to the corner lights. Thanks everyone thats definitely a project to look forward to after I get the chrome/amber bulbs.

for some reason I like the 'orangish' look of the 99-01, I prefer the 99-01 taillights, and definitely the interior features and the analog clock.

it ain't an infiniti without the analog clock :D

i heard on here you can actually swap out the center and fit the analog clock set up on older 97-98 models. also a question i have is, do all 99-01 come with the rear window curtain standard?

I have owned a 97 for 5 years and I am also undecided as to which I like better. But I recently found a 99 at the junkyard and got the following items: 

trunk lid (complete with chrome bar) $38
rear backseat with adjustable headrests (good condition) $21
side skirts and door moldings $20
4 17" factory 5 spokes (2 wrapped in decent Toyos) for $32 a piece 

Then I lucked up and found an 89 Jaguar with chrome and woodgrain tables $5 bucks a piece... the checkout guy even looked at me bewildered and said "where'd you find these?"

so for about $200 bucks I think I did well for myself in upgrades. Next up is the sunroof and maybe the middle console with analog clock, but I'm debating whether or not I like my woodgrain center in the 97 better.

What color is the woodgrain? I need the upper vents

the stock plastic brown type, not birds eye maple.... but I think I'm gonna keep my 97 center for now. I will let you know if they become available tho.
