Y33 Intake

Okay, so as most of you know, the Y33 has the WORST low-end power ever. I have worked in dealerships driving cars for 8 years now and have never come across a car with this bad of a low-end. If I give it more gas than normal, it will move but the gas gauge drops significantly. 

I have a cheap Spectre CAI from my old V6 Explorer and I was wondering if it would fit on the Y33 or would I run into problems? I dont want a CEL either. If anyone has added an intake, feel free to give me some suggestions or anything I can do to get some low-end without killing my MPGs.

From the last time I looked under the hood, I believe that the MAF sensor is integrated into the airbox by a metal flange and wire mesh. I plan on doing mine next week. This will have to be custom fabbed'.

Yea I thought that was going to be the case.. I would go the custom route but have no idea how or where to go for that..

There are 2 routes to take... One would be to take the y33 to a performance shop. Second route, if you have the mechanical skills, visit vibrantperformance.com. On that site, they have all types of piping and intercooler piping.

I also forgot to mention that you will need to relocate the intake air temp sensor. That will have to be welded in with a bung that is threaded. I am not sure what size.

I never felt my y33 lacked any low end power I always thought it was pretty quick off the line. Maybe it's something else cause if it's running good it shouldn't feel slow, considering it only 270hp I was always pretty impresses with mine.

It could be normal for the y33 but it just feels weird to me.. Like it struggles up to 45 mph because after that its golden and can truly haul. Im just trying to get it off the line faster, as in, when the light turns green I dont want to feel like the parking brake is on.

You bought the wrong car.   This is not a sports car at all.   I suggest driving a 03+ F50 if you want fast.   Reason is Y33 is a 4-speed while a F50 has a 5-speed with more power.   Another reason why I say 03+ and not 02+ is because there was complaints of the cars passing abilities and starts...there was a TCM upgrade as well as a new gas pedal assembly for the 02 but some people didn't do it but in 03 and up they were already installed.  At the dealer its about $1000USD for this service.   My F50 was a rocket compared to my Y33.   I start super slow on my Y33 because I know there is no reason to go fast in this thing.   I rarely drive past 70mph on the highways.   In my civic si its 80+ no problem

BTW... Even in my 02 F50 I added a Greddy Airinx intake Type B or whatever and it didn't feel like it did much.   Engine got alittle bit louder but you could hardly tell and you have to put some load on the engine before you hear anything.

Blitz- thanks for the advice. I have talked to some y33 owners and they all complained of this but I didnt know it was this bad. I figured an intake/exhaust setup wouldnt do too much to help the situation. 

Oh well, now I have an excuse to drive slow.

You probably need an exhaust so you can feel it? My buddies y33 is quieter than his girl's camry. Lol

you might have a heavier foot then others.   I could make the car go faster off the line but thinking of all the gas I just burned for subpar acceleration stops me.

could be a faulty afm giving you bad acceleration and driving situations. lol i'm about to make an intake for the M, as homeboy yudi already has his custom cai up and running.

Same here. Its almost feels like my 91 Z71. Its fun to have a heavy foot, but you pay at the pump lol

if you want better response do a z32 na diff, it is 4.08 ratio compared to 3.69 stock. I'm doing that to mine as well as an Apexi intake filter, it already comes ready to bolt on to your maf

yeah Z32 75mm bolts on to the maf

yep, z32 maf adapter works perfectly... i didnt really notice any power difference, but it sounds mean!

man, you and Yudi (kingpin) got some of the dirtiest engine bays I've ever seen lol. My Y33, and my Y34 were/are both spotless under the hood. Last thing after drying the car, use one of the damp cloths and wipe the engine bay down, takes 2 minutes, no offense lol


I hope someone comes up with a bitchin intake cause it should pretty easily swap over to the Y34 and even though I doubt you'll see any gain in power at all since the factory system is a true cold air intake to begin with, I'd still probably get one.

their climates are much harsher then ours so that probably what contributed to the filth.  It scares me when I see pictures of NE region under carriage.

No excuse IMO. Keeping your engine bay clean is part of keeping your VIP car clean :rules:

I totally agree with you, but I didn't want to drive the car through the mud to wash my engine bay lol.

Ok, so I was around NICO club for a while and I was wondering if anyone has used/knows how to get in contact with the person selling the NICO chips for the y33? If it improves MPGs and increases power, I could consider this a viable alternative.

Plus, after looking into adding a CAI, the factory box seems better than a cone filter because its already placed in the best location..

no to the chip idea. its a bunch of bs.
and yeah, factory intakes are well designed from the start, but it doesnt mean they flow the best compared to an aftermarket setup.
since the z32 adapter will bolt up on a y33 afm, it SHOULD work on a y34....but i'm not sure the y33 and y34 have the same bolt spacing.....

contact elwesso (wes)  he's a g50 master, im sure he cant point you to a y33 chip, if there is even one made...

On the Y33, it would be ideal to build a cold air box, have the OEM duct push cold air into it and then have a Z32 (etc etc) cone type filter within that larger box.  This would give you better airflow and still keep the filter away from the under hood temperature heated air.
