you know I really don't see what's so special about this one...  I can't see the purple.   Maybe in direct sunlight?   Looks like a semi gloss matte black face and a glossy black lip...nothing new..or am I missing something here?

Yeah I don't see it either, looks like the basic matt black.
 
or maybe it's a kind of "midnight" black where it's suppose to be black but a slight bit on the blue side. I have no idea.

There are three types of black by WORK Japan.

MBL - full matte black
MDB - black with slightly purple base or sometimes called mid night black
BLK - glossy black

I have a sweater from armani exchange that's color coded "midnight black". 
 
by itself it looks normal black, but the difference is noticable when you put it side by side to regular black.
