93 LS400 problem

This does not pertain to VIP but it is lexus related. My parents own a 93 LS400 and is barely hitting 100k miles so its hardly ever driven. Anyhow, the lights in the gauge don't show up anymore. Once in awhile it will it'll go on and off, flickering if you will. Also the gas needle doesn't move anymore. My parents would fill up the tank of gas to full but the needle stays empty and they'd know they'd be out of gas if the orange light comes on. The dealer wants 2000 bucks to fix this and said this is a common occurance for old model lexus and not just LS400s. My parents always have to go to a shady place to get the car inspected to have it pass, if not, it'll surely fail. What can be done about this without forking out 2 grand? was this ever a recall?

It's something to do with the old electronics, there was a guy on Clublexus that was doing repairs on these for several hundred. It usually occurs more often when it is cold outside. I believe there is also a company on ebay that is repairing these, but I have not heard anything about how succesful they are. Do a search on CL and it'll turn up some results.

This is one of the major issues with the first gen lexus'. Ive had this problem with my ES, but fixed it by simply tapping the speedometer. Got all the lights back up except for the gas needle. Try giving it a few taps with your finger and things should start lighting back up. Worth giving a try... instead of dropping $2000...

I have heard very good things about the guy on Club Lexus reparing the HVAC electronics as well as others. I believe it has to do with cold solder points and other annoyances. I am also tryin to VIP out my 1991 LS400. I have a few elctrical things to fix. in my cluster too.

I would search ClubLexus for radio and A/C control display fixes.
