Bolt chroming
Figured I'd post here as a lot of people re-do their wheels. This is my second time redoing these wheels and I have done others for friends/clients, etc. I need some help with something other than simple pull apart, polish/powder/paint, and reassmble, seal...
I took my original Weds bolts to a chrome guy my powder coater recommended and he said he was only able to do light chrome. He siad the bolts were originally done in heavy chrome and that no body in so cal or anywhere for that matter offered heavy chroming. He said that if he did them he would charge $4/bolt and when I torqued them down, I would be in the same situation I was in with rusting before.
His recommendation: use a solvent to strip the rust, polish them out, wash them off, air dry them, and then use an acrylic clear from a ratlle can. I am anxious about this as the rattle can shit will be MUCH softer than light chrome and I may end up in the same situation. When I rinse the bolts in CLR, they come out looking new and are without rust/pits, etc.
Replacing the hardware may be an option, but I am having trouble finding anything other than Work bolts. I don't want to use the same "BBS" style bolts everyone is using as mine is the traditional 12 point female bolt head, and not a male head 12 point. Thanks for any advice in advance.

I got a full set from my supplier of high grade stainless. damn near 100 bucks for a box. they are just bolts for looks. Bolts for securing the face will need to be longer and will cost more

I had my Weds bolts all rechromed...it did cost me like $300 something. Not sure if they did light or heavy though. They had rust/oxidation previously and had to be chemically stripped and refinished.

try hi tech chroming aka whiting enterprises in santa fe springs, ca.
562-946-5100.
they quoted me about $1-1.50 a piece for bolts and that was to remove old material as well.

Yeah, this is specifically why I wanted mine rechromed. I want to kee the original hardware and have it looking the same. Hard to find complete sets, yada yada these days. Mainly want to stick with original stuff.
Thanks for the replies guys. I will check some of the posts out. I had the local shop say $1.50 ea for mine, but he never mentioned the other stuff about hard vs light etc. Wait and see I guess...

Don't torque from the front of the bolt...
Finger tight the nut and then a light squeeze from the other side, then pull the driver out and torque only the nut side. The nuts lock them self against the flange.

Yeah I know what you mean. I am having them built at VR most likely. They seem to know what they are doing and I have had a few sets done by them. I don't have a driver or a wheel mount, so it makes it hard for me. Anyway, I called a couple of the places listed. I am waiting to hear from a local place and then will send them out to get done.
