Question about 05-06 Q45 F50 trunk tail lights

Is there any function to that circled part of the tail light on the trunk lid? I was thinking of shaving that off because I don't like how the rear end of the 05-06 looks like the Fuga. I do however like the 05-06 head lights and upgraded interior trim which is why I want to pick up the 05-06 version vs the 01-04 chassis. Is that circled part a reflector or they actually light up?
