Please, please help! Fender splitting?

So I shaved my rear fenders a while ago and everything was fine. I got the car shipped 1800 miles on a [URL="http://www.clublexus.com/forums/#"][COLOR=darkgreen]truck[/COLOR][/URL]  and when I got it back, I noticed a buckle. The fender has started  splitting. I tried using 3m panel bond, but it split again after a  couple days. The panel bond may have not worked for 2 reasons:

1. I mixed it by hand instead of through the nozzle because I didn't have the special gun. Maybe I didn't mix it well enough.

2. I couldn't get it between the panels because the gap was too tight. I only put it on the outside.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? I just moved back to Louisiana and  the shops suck around me. Went to 3 shops I knew of, 1st was out of  business, 2nd didn't want to do it, 3rd told me it would be 2-3k to fix [B]ONE FENDER[/B].

Oh and OG, I know you hate shaving but this was done before I stumbled upon this website and your wisdom. Can you just tell me how to fix it? I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

If you cut/shaved the lip off the quarter you eliminated the pinch wells that hold the 1/4 to the wheelhouse. This created the "split" you see. Best fix is to weld and repaint but If you are gona use panel bond you will have to separate the two pieces the best you can without stretching them. Get some sort of grinder or some sandpaper (atleast 80grit or coarser) and get them both down to bare metal. I've never mixed by hand (always had a gun) but you need to get it between the panels and clamp them together for 24 hours to cure. Don't smash them together just enough pressure so the glue holds. My friend cut his 1/4s and glued them. Have held for a few years now. Hope this helps!

^ what he said. GENTLEY seperate, get the proper tool (cartridge gun and mixing tips), apply, clamp, proper cure time. i would stay away from welding unless you were planning other body mods/paint anyway,

What type of tool should I use to separate it? I don't want to do more damage getting it apart.

The easiest tool to find to use would be something like a gasket scraper. It is thin enough and has a Sharp edge to help you slide in between the 2 pieces. I have a tool called a seam buster but I use to use a cheap gasket scraper. Just don't beat it with a hammer and punch through the sheetmetal! There is seam dealer that Toyota puts in there which is what is probably holding it together now. It is not strong though so a little pressure is needed

It's mostly used for splitting panels that have spot welds but if you use it carefully it will work with your situation. The company that makes it is called Steck. They make all sorts if cool specialized tools. I got mine from my Snap-On dealer. But you can order it online from Eastwood. They are usually super fast with shipping. so since I don't have the spot welds any more, which one do you think I should use? the seam buster or the gasket scraper? sorry about all of the questions, i just want to make sure i do it right.

i don't think what you use is as important as how you use it. you want to sperate the seam without damaging the metal, i think i would be more likely to go at it with a plastic trim tool than anything metal.remember you're just trying to create seperation, not bend them apart. some wooden paint sticks may be helpful with holding the gap as you go.

Yeah OG makes a great point that I didn't think about. Since you don't do this every day you should try something plastic to get up in there. A seam buster or scraper can do some serious damage real quick if not careful. So try a plastic type clip tool or wedge first. It's hard to tell you what to do over the internet cause we are not there to actually see what's goin on. Eastwood.com also sells all types of plastic trim tools that you could use. So you will have to be patient and take your time separating the metal.

Need your help OG and DONECD6. So I bought the seam  splitter and got the fender apart today. I didn't try to split it more  than this because I didn't want to cause a dimple on the outside. Is it  supposed to split more than this? If not, what can I use to get the  epoxy up there? The nozzle for the 3m epoxy is too big to get up there. I  tried a small livestock needle before and it was too small. The epoxy  was too viscous to flow through such a small needle. Any suggestions,  really need your help.

am i the only one who thinks you should just roll the whole thing out and tack weld it? My Q had horrid fender work previous to my owning. and i have to cut it hammer, roll and grind and primer it.

Gun and epoxy just came in. Anyone have advice on a nozzle to use to get the epoxy up here?

sorry bro; as you know, i was in the hosptial last. for some reason i can't load vsc on my laptop so i did what i had to do by phone and didn't surf threads. to be  honest i would just mask off the surrounding area, pump it, clamp,  and wipe off the excess. the 3m tip is as big as it is because it mixes the 2 parts, which is very important.

... and people ask me why i beat dead horses. it's rarely for the benefit of the people who already have their mind set and want to argue, they can take it or leave it, but when the game is embedded with good info it avoids mistakes like this.

I haven't glued it yet. It's been raining on and off, so I'm waiting until I know I will have a few dry days in a row. I have two nozzles ready. I went to walmart and picked up some metal turkey injectors. I jb welded those to the plastic 3m nozzles and then sealed them together with silicone tape. Then I was able to flatten the metal tip. Hopefully, it flows well through there. I even have the little 3m gun now. I'll be sure to let you guys know if it works.

So I got the epoxy in today, hopefully it holds that panels together. Below is a picture of the turkey injector needle attached to the 3m nozzle.

All I did to mines was hammer it back to place, but my fenders don't look good in the first place lols
