Y33 Egr Valve Cleaning Help.

I have been searching nico and google for steps on how to remove and clean the egr passage valve on my y33 but i am still confused to where i should start. Almost everywhere i searched people say " There is no way to clean the egr tube without taking the upper plenum off, simply because there is not enough room in between the back of the engine and the firewall to pull out the EGR tube."
Can anyone clarify on how and where and what the upper plenum is and how to take it off? Do i need to take out the whole intake manifold, and throttle body to clean this tube? Im pretty sure its really clogged because just recently my car has a shaking problem and its not my coils or plugs because my exhaust is sputtering now and releases weird burnt smell. If anyone can give me some steps it would help thanks

you sure it isn't the cat that's burnt? I think it smells like rotten eggs when bad.

Here is a write up on NICO: http://forums.nicoclub.com/fgy33-plenum-removal-56k-beware-adding-pics-now-t420801.html

I did this all last summer, plus replacing my VC gaskets. The EGR tube is impossible to take out without removing the upper plenum. Its bolted onto the back and you have to slide it out the back to get it off. See pic below:

upper plenum is another word for upper intake manifold. it's called a plenum because it is a single chamber before it splits into the runners.
