Subs hitting high and low bass

Noob Question 

Just curious, are there certain subs that only hit low and some that only hit high and some that do both?

Low and high pass filters figure that out. A speaker/subwoofer will play whatever you send it.

Subs= low
Midrange = mids
Tweeters = high

Thats what i thought, but my brother has had a few diff systems over the last few years and he told me and let me listen to his 2 JL 10's and they hit any bass beat high/low you threw at it! But then he got a new system with a pair of db drive 12's with a 4,000 watt amp to push them and he would complain about them only hitting the lower bass beat and the reason i was wondering is bc i picked up the db drive subs from him and am trying to decide if i should keep them or sell em and get some diff subs like TC's?

what you are talking about is flat frequency response. it's a result of good sub selection, enclosure, and eq'ing. if you look at the frequency response graph you will see that all speakers have a peak. ported enclosures, for example, are tuned to a specific frequency; where they will be loudest. getting a flat frequency response takes a lot of calculation, measurment, and tuning.

Flush - I wouldn't get rid of them. The subs are fine. It's the box design that's most important. You can use software like WInISD (free) to design the box to suit the subs. You input the subs paramters and it tells you if its suited to be ported or sealed. It will even tell you optimal shape and the number and size of ports. You can then input the box dimensions for your car and it will tell you the number and ports you'll need. I used it extensively to try and figure out what can fit in my trunk. This needs to be done before purchasing subs of any kind.

I am too a fan of JL audio devices.

Do take into consideration the size also, you can't expect an 8 to move as much air as a 12 but similarly a 10 will be more responsive than a 15.
