The Junction Produce of Freshwater Aquariums

http://www.adgshop.com/

I've been reading up on these "Nature Aquariums" and apparantely the man who is on top of this is Takashi Amano. He has a few articles in 'Tropical Fish Hobbyist' where he is an editor of the magazine. He came out with this company in japan a few years ago IIRC and now it's here in America. I want to build one of these aquariums, I think they top Ocean type aquariums by far. Less maintenance too!

yeah, this is really cool, it's just pretty expensive from that particular company. mainly the setup costs, after that, the filtration expenses are about normal.

nice link, good stuff.

We had a 50 gal saltwater tank back in the day, my fav was always the lionfish we had, its amazing watching those things eat.

anyway we donated the contents and I took it to house my LIZARDS!

What type of Arowana? They are pretty sensitive to water conditions not to mention if you believe in them bringining good luck. I have a 55 gal setup that had a rare Australian Arowana (long bodied). I got it when it was 3" and it died at 7". Dumb water heater malfunctioned and cooked it. I had Whisper eat up the cost but still not worth losing it. I also have a 20 gallon setup with a red tailed catfish. This guy is a monster; he eats too much.

And speaking about aquariums I found this picture.

Australian Arowanas aren't that rare really... now compare it to a Golden Crossback and now we talking rare.... $11,000 for a fry that isn't even guaranteed to live beyond the yolk sack hahahahaha and you should really trade in that Red Tail... they will outgrow most PONDS in less than a year and a half, they can grow to 6ft and weigh as much as 300+ lbs., they are known as "monsters" in the Amazon by the jungle tribes hahahahaha nice to know there's a lot of fellow aquariusts here, I used to be a South American/Lake Tanganyikan Cichlid Specialist. I was hooked, that and all Arowanas and Brackish Water Fishes hahahahaha

i'm looking into getting another tank pretty soon, nothing big, just something along the lines of a 40-65 gallon, plant it, and only have small fish, i'm really fascinated by guoarmi's (sp?) so i'm thinking some paradise fish, a few other types of gouarmi's, tetras, and some other 'rare' small freshwater fish.nothing over 6", anybody have any other ideas?

Welldepending on your level of experience. beginner-intermediate-advanced-professional, I would probably go with that setup of community while you work out the kinks of trying to raise a a healthy community with live plants. The plants need you to dose the water with CO2 while the fish need as much oxygen as possible hhahahahaha the balance will drive you nuts! it was killing me for a while hahahahahaha believe me man, READ hahahhaha save yourself the heartache of watching fish and or plants die! yeah, i've been reading up on agaforums.com....i really want to run an ada setup...but that's way to fricken expensive...as for right now, i was hoping to balance out the waste/plants to equalize and help breakdown the waste, and feed the plants, and have the plants aerate the water...haha, i've got a lot more reading to do!

yeah you can try but the fact is that for them to stay healthy you will still have to introduce CO2 from time to time to give them a healthy boost so they will stay nice and lush. I wish I had a tank going again.

There are two types of Austrailian Arowana. The common one is called the Jardini (Scleropages jardini). Most people don't know about this species called Scleropages leichardti. The difference is that the leichardti is long bodied and the red spots are much brighter and present. So I did not have the Jardini but the Leichardti. Two different kinds. Most aquariums/fish stores dont even know about it.:p Golden crossback are sweet but not a beginner fish as well.

The red tail is a monster but dont mind. He eats about ten xlarge feeders every three days .

yes it endemic to Australia but we all know the common name is associated with the Jardini, and that is sweet, never met anyone that owned a Leichardti, always read about people's research on them.... that monster is gonna eat any nearby spider monkeys or children and then you're gonna be in a pickle hahahahaha

always thought that the 'common' australian arawana looked the best. my buddy had both an asian, and an australian, in the same tank! they were raised together, so they had no problems. then his asian ate a puffer fish, and it died, apparantly karma works with fish too.

hahahahahaha hey man all tanks are badass in my book, I used to be one of those aggro fools that if the fish weren't violent I didn't want them, now I can appreciate a community tank for the beauty it is and the simplistic elegance and luxury it can present.....like our cars. Forum image

I think they are all VIP but I do love plant tanks, but REEF tanks man, its like the same motto.....If your gunna do it waste the money so it looks good. And if you aint got the cash to keep up with it why crash it?

But big aquariums in general I think go with VIP class people.
Ammano is the S$@*t half of almost everything he uses was made by hand, glass buble counters, co'2 refractors, halide fixtures and even the tanks...some have the weirdest demensions...just like some of VIP's offsets:smiley: the guy did it all, all his products were made by him at one point of time for his own good. CRAZY....I read TFH on a almost daily bassis..

You now Caoboy its funny you posted something on this..I was gonna ask who thinks aquariums are VIP...if you like the nature tank, do you get terrariums? Same thing but less water mostly land....some cases just enough water for some fish, usually animals like Dart frogs and such...

Thats the way I do terrariums at least......enough land for animals and enough water for fish and its tight, you can do the water part just like a nature aquarium...with plants and all. Ive spent countless amounts of cash on these things!

i like regular aquariums, with exotic fish, and when i first read up on amano showing how to set up nature tanks, i feel in love with the design. it is my cup of tea, and just like our cars, they are all awesome, and yet, different in their own ways. there will never be a twin of your aquarium, yet reef tanks, exotic tanks, and naturescapes are ALL vip. haha.

i want build it amano style...but it is my first time building a heavily planted tank. probably going to transplant the grass (background) and couple of other plants that i have into it after it cycles, then start adding more plants/fish later. i'm going to go with white gravel, i like the look of it i guess. i dont want colored gravel, because after it's been in there for long enough the paint tends to peel off, and it leaves more of a mess every time you clean it. i figure the contrast between teh plants/gravel, and black background to help give it depth shd help out a bit...i'll have to see how it turns out.

Well, thats cool...I would use snad tho for the plants or even a plant substrate....... are you doing a lot of different schooling fish....you might want to airbrush the back in contrast from orange to a yellow if you realy want top make a project out of it....it helps the colors on the smaller schooling fish pluss they are mostly found around shallower waters...dont want to get gulped by Oscars!....If you are going with bigger comunity fish black is cool just get Power compacts or halides for the plants.... but put the gravel or sand in with the plants first.......this is something Amano does.... fill it up a bit then add the plants and slowly fill the rest of the way......I would most def put in the substrate at least first cause you need area for all the beneficila bacterias to collonate.

Oh and if youu want black you can get black vinyl from a craft store or something....thats alot less messy than painting glass and its sticky on one side.....you can even find black backgrounds that just cling without tape or glue's....www.toofishy.com...these guys own a shop near my house...they might be alll salt water but they have the backgrounds pluss reasonable prices for lighting needs...

This I must also say...nomater how its done, you did it the way you wanted it...trial and error is the key.

Oh and another is to use moss as a background!!!!! ...its a lot of explaining but to make it simple you take a piece of plastic mesh get alot of java moss and put it ontop of the mesh...make sure its to fit the length and depth of your tank then after you cover it with moss glue another peice over top and let the moss grow!

Im sure you can find out more on the internet but thats a quick rundown.....

what i plan to do with my tank. leaning more towards the second picture. smaller fish, biggest species would be the paradise fish. (~4in. full grown).
everything else would be some cardinal tetra, maybe some danio, and i'm still looking around for a couple other species to toss in there.

what i plan to do with my tank. leaning more towards the second picture. smaller fish, biggest species would be the paradise fish. (~4in. full grown).
everything else would be some cardinal tetra, maybe some danio, and i'm still looking around for a couple other species to toss in there.

Yeah, ummm I wouldnt suggest discus for noobs, but that second ones awsome...gunna be hard tho...I like the tetra's but I also like to keep my comunity tanks boarders closed...meaning...I like fish from one area......try bloodfin tetras and Angles get like... f'in...25 of em...the blood fins I meen.. they school in a line one after another if there is enough obstacles. If you like the tetras try other S.american comunity fish...thats my op....but it is your tank and I would like to see it finished good luck.

Oh and that whole center point of focal view thing is hard to pull off for first timers lets see u do it man..I like the path that goes into the woods theme on that tank.....
Good luck again and show pics...just dont get cheap with the lighting needs if your plants require them and get otto cats they do a great job and can be kept in shoals as well.

I agree discus are not a n00b type fish or even minor intermediate... pH goes off for a bit and you got some expensive lily pads floating in your water after that!!! hahahahaha I love the second tank as well and as for the whole focal point themegoes, I believe even a n00b can do it and pull it off decently as long as you don't try and over do it by building it up too much. Design the tank on paper first then do as much research as possible to see what works and what doesn't. Just another helpful tip from the serial fish killing legend here hahahahaha live and learn believe me!!!! Forum image

Overdoing it is the thing but getting the path to sit just off a little bit then making it look as if its going into the distance....Ive been at this for a long time I think its hard...itll be cool if it cant be done right the first time....a trick to discus is peat inside a canister....never fail oh and good filtering cause they eat like Nicole Richie....I mean they pick at stuff alll day....never get a full meal at once...leave scraps behind...blah..blah..blah...and how the hell are they able to live in such bright lighting...they dont like that.

Ahh..I think I see the fish now...maybe...are they shy?( bow front)

Thats a long time to just be cycleing a aquarium...unless we missunderstood eachother....Picos rock!! I dont car what anyone says they are harder than a 76 bow or any other size..take skill to keep em going clean, dont add fish I would just add a small single specimen invert...

That Nano Cube type tank looks so much bigger with that cool sump....are you against leaving ref..lights on all day and night? Or do you just treat it as a reverse photosynthesis sump?...lots of untold changes take place at night some people like to leave lights on the sump at night only to help swings in quality that occure while your not awake to monitor.

got my stuff set up, and planted, and blacked out the back of the tank. my fish aren't liking the light setup though, i may go with a lower kelvin light bulb, see if that helps a bit. AND, the plants need to grow a bit bigger too, to add more shade.

The bowfront has a Tomato Clown (4yrs), Oceliars Clown (nemo2yrs), 2 Green Chromis (2yrs), Fuzzy Dwarf Lion and Brown Leaf Fish. Fish are shy hints no fish in pic.
As fars a light timing. My friend and I did what we thought would work. Sump light on when Halide was off.

right now i can't find my camera, or else pictures would already be up! it's just a flourescent light, standard with what came with the hood. i dont think there's an actual kelvin temp on it, i can't find it anywhere. found out the UGF that was supplied with my tank, is not what i want to use (not good for plant growth). i have that and 2 powerheads for it that are just sitting around now, ditched them for an external canister setup. The canister setup is WAY quieter than the UGF setup! cleared up the water quickly.

Fish stock right now is just 6 paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) and one Koi.
Going to be getting rid of the Koi soon, since he's not very good with plants.
I plan on grabbing some tetras, since I like how they school. i need to get a couple of SAE or some shrimp, to clean off the plants, as the one snail i have in there isn't really doing his job lol. I'm going to be getting some more plants/grow these a bit more, and add some driftwood and aquascape it a little more, i'll post changes if i ever find a camera around here.
Fish/plants are doing pretty good since i didnt cycle the tank very long (eek) only about 2 days, then i couldnt handle it anymore and checked the levels/ dumped the fish in. levels are normal right now...i check it every 1 to 2 days.
The fish are less shy with the light now, I think it scares them when it comes on, it flickers a bit and then pops on. they run around under the plants a bit, then come out. I need to get a light timer, so it will automatically come on every day, and they'll get used to it that way. i dont really know what else, except to add a CO2 injection system for the more plants that i plan on planting (say that 5xfast lol)

I doubt I am the only one to tell you this but, they belong only in ponds.....where do you live if I may ask? They can reach about 2 feet and need colder water like gold fish, paradise fish do as well they are one of a very few popular fish that belong with gold fish other than gold fish.... if you are going down the planted tropical route it may be best to do rid of both.

Ask a neighbor or friend or anybody with a pond if they want it...Im sure they will, people love free KOI....I worked at a petshop and I had a lot of people who didnt understand this bringem in to me...I would simply give them to others with ponds or let them lose in ponds at parks and such where people cant fish....like rose gardens and other type places.....I got the idea of placeing them in the rosegarden by my house cause I seen many others pluss.....more and more every year......if you live where its cold right now your best bet is to give it to a shop or keep it till spring.

Oh and also, watch out for snails some are good and some are bad......some multiply very fast and eat plants.......for the algae eaters I would go with (ottocinclus) they are peacefull and unlike others they wont pick on fish....plecostomus get to big for plant tanks and the chineese start to love the tast of the fishes slim litteraly.

yeah i bought 3 otto's, but they were walmart fish, so 2 of them died. one got ick and died in like a day, and the other died because the koi tried to eat it too! the otto sucked onto the koi's mouth and i was able to get him out, but he died a few hours after that.

as for the paradise fish, they are a gourami, and they only reach about 3.5-4 inches when fully grown. i have one that is fully grown already. the other 5 are about 2 inches now.

i want to pick up some amano shrimp, but can't find any locally, so i'm going
to go with ghost shrimp. only problem is, paradise fish like eating ghost shrimp, but i think if i buy a good amount, they might leave them alone. if not, then it's a good little diet for the fish lol.

also, snails, i have ONE. all my plants were bought without snails, hopefully it will stay that way. haven't seen any yet anyways. the snail i have is a mystery snail, one that actually needs a mate and has an actual gender. so no asexual reproduction here!

Sometimes the hump dont get big at all, sometimes the petshops may get em mixed up for another type that might not get a hump. And sometimes they get real big before they get the hump in.

I used to breed African Cichlids and sell them to the local fish store. I had one main tank and about 6 brood tanks for various aged fish. They had to be dime sized before they'd take them in. Separating the male/female was done with a simple clear divider. They would place the eggs inside this small flower pot I put in there. Then after they hatched they were guarded either by mouth or near the flower pot.

I later switched to salt water. I had a 55gal for years with various fish and creatures. Murray our snowflake eel was the oldest. Had him the whole time I had the tank till I gave it to my little brother when he started getting into salt water aquariums. I made my own wet/dry too using hair curlers as bio-media and a 20gal tank with pump and what not.

Later when we build our house we're going to have one section of a wall be our salt water tank. Once you get your eco-system set it's actually very easy to manage.

Thats VIP!!! thats What I plan to do, and its allways best after you actually get sick of the tank inways to say...Thats when you tend to not mess with it as much constantly changingstuff....( I dont mean water thats a good thing).

Ahhhh snow flake moray's....I had one in a 46g bow reef. Nothing like seeing his face slowly pop out of a bushel of Anthealia for a whack at some thawed shrimp, then slowly vanish back into the rock..

Like a A$$ hole I decided to move him into my Volitans tank where I had Pinchy...he was a giant hermit I raised for a long time....welll he held his own against everybody, he was actualy the toughest in that specific tank till he molted.

update on my fish. i decided to pick up a red devil from the LFS for a cheap 10 bucks. well as it turns out (i bought him a couple months ago) he's got camellanus, and the worms have infected almost all my fish. the otto and plecos didn't get it, or i can't see the worms yet. so i've decided end their fish lives early, since even if i do treat them, more than likely, the dying worms will rot in their stomachs and kill them anyways. any way to 'assist' their death besides flushing? my red devil is too big to flush out the toilet...
