Is chrome tacky?

I just bought a set of used 20" Brabus Monoblock IV rims.  The finish is I would say 80% good.   I say 80% because of all the nicks and scratches.   I was thinking the easiest way to fix most of this would probably be to sand and chrome dip it.   Should I or not?

I think they look best polished.

But it wouldn't be *bad* in chrome I guess.

They will look awful really really awful you must sell them to me for cheap or trade them for my Lowenhart LD1's before your car devalues from the meer sight of those filthy wheels...... hahahahaha of course they'll look good polished they'll look ok chrome.

i say yes you should dip them in chrome.

have them cleaned up and repolished. chromed is just a cheap way to make something 'look' polished.

youre kidding right? chroming is a lot more expensive than polishing.. if anything, POLISHED in a cheap way to make something look CHROME

Good chrome requires that a part is well polished first... so it does cost a lot more than polish. People are confusing two things: 1) that all polished finishes look like the "diamond cut" finish that Japanese wheel manufacturers offer from the factory, and 2) that all chrome finishes look like cheap crap chrome that come on cheap crap bling bling SUV wheels. Without proper machinery, there is no way to achieve that machine cut/polish finish, so if you have a refinisher polish a wheel.. it will just look shiny and mirror-like, but not as shiny and mirror-like as chrome. And if you have a good refinisher/plater chrome a quality wheel, then it will basically look like a mirror. So if you're refinishing a wheel, and want true shine, you go chrome. If you want that diamond cut "polished" look, you won't really be able to achieve it, so that's not an option. So then it's either go chrome, or go painted (silver, black, gray, etc...). You can get away with just polishing the lips because chroming them will mess up their tolerance, and you might not be able to bolt the wheels back together.

polish does look better to me but the maintenance is a bitch unless its clear coated.   Clear coating polished surface is another PITA.   I was thinking chroming would be the best way to go and would end up being cheaper and chrome is easier to take care of.

Agreed, polish is something even I can do at home.  Check out Prahjec's UCF10 on Work Euroline S2s.  They're a very high polish that looks almost like chrome.

How about Black chrome?

the rims I have are kinda different...I think the face of it is diamond cut.  The holes inbetween the spokes taper in but thats not polished but more like painted silverish.

chrome is only tacky when it is slopped on thick to cover its imperfections.

The japanese like their ish perfect so their application of chrome is thin and smooth for a perfect finish. 

This is why japanese chrome wheels look more attractive than others.

Anything is good if it's not bling. I think even with the black chrome. Black chrome is nice on emblems and wheels. I've seen it done to interior trims and it was a bit blingy. So, depends where, and how much? I think goes with anything that grabs attention tho.

ah nice. 20" and slammed will work real nicely. 

don't chrome it, just machine polish it. It looks better and cheaper to.

I wish they were brabus III though.

any examples of what a basic polish job looks like?  Because I have chrome Carlsson wheels that I am thinking of having refinished but will they come out nicely if I have the chrome removed and stick with polish?  

I own these wheels do you think I can get close to this finish?

To me in that picture they look silver painted with polished lip
