for those with slammed y33's with coilovers
I talked to zion already and wanted to get more feedback.
as you all know, the stock y33 ride is super smooth.
How does it compare to stock ride ? do u bottom out easily ? is it super bouncy ?

antbo you gonna go air for your y33 ?
I was gonna go for coilovers but I just don't see how any strut with such a short strut travel (due to it beiing slammed) can be anywhere near decent, UNLESS I'M WRONG and this is why I ask this question.
Am I wrong guys ? can a slammed car with high quality coilovers (JIC, TEIN, etc) have a decent ride and not be so bouncy / bottom out so easily ? Is it physically possible when you have such a small traveling distance on your struts ?

yup
to me it wasnt necessarily bottoming out. it was just to bouncy and my tires kept rubbing in the front. although i didnt mod my front fenders. my girlfriend didnt like riding in my car. i had tein flex in my GS before and you could hardly tell it was dropped. JIC's are just to stiff for me. i didnt lower the coilover from the spring, so i had full travel of the shock. i lowered it from the shock casing. just as the JIC manual on their website tells you to adjust it.

do all JIC coilovers have shock casing adjustment (rather than spring adjustment) ?

see how it has the red perch where the shock casing is, where the gold or for the rear the silver casing. you can shorten or raise it from there without playing with the spring
basically the gold part (spindle) and the small silver casing for the rear can go up and down with out the hieght of the spring moving

ok so you can adjust it at two points, one at the casing and one at the spring ?

I have JIC FLTA2's as well.

oh sh*t! I thought all coilover height were controlled via spring movement. Am I the only idiot that didn't know about this ? :)

other than JIC, does any other manufacturer make this "strut body adjustment" design ?
the strut body adjustment is so crucial in coilover design, no wonder tein's were known to bottom out.

Almost all new coilovers (except the most basic ones) these days have that feature...
Adjusting the height on the spring base affects the 'preload' on the spring - for racing they would adjust the perch HIGHER to get STIFFER ride. Adjusting the shock position in reference to the strut base is the correct way to adjust height.
As for the ride, yes mine rides very stiff. But contrary to Antbo, i prefer the stiff ride (in most cases) because i have to be cornering very hard before the front wheel makes contact with the innerfender (there is around 1/2" clearance above the tyre on the front - the stiff suspension prevents it from making contact). With plush air suspension it would make contact going around most corners, if i drove at this height...

Oh and yes, my gf hates riding in my car too... But thats partly because of all the attention it gets (and she doesnt like the connotations of her sitting in the passenger seat of a car with PMPDDY plates)

wow this changes everything.
a coilover deliberately designed for stiff suspenion is one thing, but a rediculous two inches of shock strut rod travel is another.
if your gonna lower and slam, like you stated - Adjusting the shock position in reference to the strut base is the ONLY WAY to do it.

Its deff a different ride..and like I said to you before some may like it and some dont. I come from a world of moding where anything goes for the look you want. I am willing to deal with the way JICs work and would not just through airbags on the car with out first have JICs. I would make it a combo JICs+ Air in place of the springs. When you are riding low its nice to have a smooth as stock ride but what happens when you have to slam on your brakes? You will most like like force the front end to scrape hard or bottom out because of the air suspension.
This is why coilovers are better, they prevent this from happening..There are pros and cons to each is what I am saying.
Antbo was probably rubbing more because of the 20" wheels. Its just like me the difference in wheel hieght will make a big difference on how much you will rub. What I found out was this. after I lowered my car to much where I rubbed the top of the fender the ride really was stiff, but becuase I did not have full suspension travel because it was hitting the tire before it would max out on travel. I raised it half an inch on the coils and now its back to a nice ride and no more rubbing. I could have kept it at the lower hieght if I had smaller tires or some 19" wheels rather than 20"..I truly think that you will have to go whats best for you. After reading a lot of your post it seems like you are on the conservative side and should either go with air or stay with springs and stay in your comfort zone.

you got your info??? :). i personally dont care about performance thats why i like air. i cant drive to car shows from san diego to LA with coilvers. a lot of the freeways in LA have small launch ramps :). thats why i like airrunner. i can adjust it were it comfy like stock and be on my way home. it sucks that i have to wake up 5am and be in LA by 7am then wait till the show ends. it can end late with no where to take a nap at. so the last thing on my mind is trying to drive slow home with coilovers and watching out for the launch ramps. waaaawaaa!!! :) but thats my thing with coilovers. but theres nothing bad about them.

with the finding of adjustable strut body coil overs (full tap) , I am not hesitant to go low. The thought of 2 inch strut rods with 2 inches of travel was a big concern. Adjustable full tap strut rod body makes it a non issue.
but I still have another dilemma: I am getting sick of using a 2 x 4 to limp into my driveway. It works but it's a PITA.
the only real solution to my needs are Air Jordans.

thats pretty funny. it seems like everyone hates a stiff ride. i just picked up the jic's from antbo and i love them. great stiff ride, not too bouncy, but it definitely does not feel like stock. its a lot sportier and handles much better.

Yo daniel,
I don't mind a stiff ride, what I do mind is bottoming out.
I wish I grabbed those FULL TAP JIC's, I had no clue they were full tap.
I guess this is why your former Tein's would bottom out and these JIC's don't.

My basic JICs dont actually bottom out (well not as far as i can tell), even though they are wound all the way down (1cm from the bottom). The shock is stiff enough to prevent bounciness as well. But that makes for a stiff ride, hence my gf not liking it.
In the end, full-tap coilovers are better, and are supposed to ride smoother than the basic ones, but they are also usually twice the price :(
