My introduction and 1999 Y33 build
hey guys my names Jeff i'm 24 and I live in Albuquerque, NM. I have lurked on VSC quite a bit and i love seeing all the cars. A little about my history i am coming from an 06 scion XB that was bagged and some interior work done, well that's gone now and i just picked up a 99 Q45 and i love it! I have wanted a big body true VIP car for a long time so when i saw it i jumped on it. When i got the car a few days ago it was in pretty bad shape, it was in some sort of accident so the front bumper needs to be replaced along with headlights but other that that cosmetically its great. However the person who owned it before me messed up putting the fan clutch in and the fan came off and destroyed the radiator and the shroud. The day i got it i ordered all the parts needed to get it running along with some clear y33 headlights. I am still debating on doing a kit or just trying to find a factory bumper so that will wait. Future plans after its running good is BC coils and wheels then eventually bags on the BC's and then interior work along with stereo stuff. Sorry for the pic quality it's all I have at the moment and also i wanted this to be a full build thread so from the day I got it to bagged and all that.

Welcome Jeff. Do something that has never been done on a Y33 before. We need some new interesting builds on here.

Drop money on maintenance items first. These cars are tanks, but they have some weak points that are a hassle. They don't like neglect.

Thanks guys I'm really excited to start another project and I am gonna stick close to the VIP style but definitely gonna make it unique.

So just a little update I got the fan, fan clutch, fan shroud, and radiator in today out all the parts in with no problems what so ever drove the car for the first Time and all I have to say is wow! This car is so amazing and smooth engine is strong even though it's in bad need of a tuneup because it has a hesitation but tranny is good and everything else is amazing! Next up is registration and tuneup then new wheels and tires. Then start saving up for coilovers I was looking at BC coilovers from OG the -40 12k 10k setup just curious if the people who have them enjoy the ride and if they go decently low I am eventually going UAS on them but for the time being I wanna not look too monster truck status lol! I will keep updating as I get money hahaha...oh and one last question I'm in need of a front bumper cover and I figure since I have to get a new one might as well look at aftermarket and I was thinking either aimgain, sessions, or mode parfume, my question is does anybody know if and where I could get just a front bumper and not the whole kit?

I had the BC -40mm dampers with 14/12k and can tell you from my own experience. The ride was great! However the drop, eh...wasn't low enough for what I was going for. While it wasn't "monster truck status" as you say, it certainly wasn't "slammed". I would recommend them. OG has pictures of -40mm dampers maxed out on his vendor area.
But some reference for ya - This is the guy who has my old -40mm dampers on his Q on 20's. They are maxed out.

That's about all I want for now being as I'm going to go air and won't be on coils for very long just as long as I get some sort of low because going from a bagged xb to this is way different. Also where I live there's a lot of times having a slammed car is impossible lol

Just a little update, I'm trying to chase down a hesitation that's been happening codes I got were for egr valve closed, knock sensor on bank 1&2, and O2 sensor so car is down and I'm just checking little things now. Once all this stuff is done then I can finally start doing fun stuff lol! Anybody else have a similar hesitation issue when going from a stop

Do you have any sort of hesitation issue at all? Maybe the correct word is sputter where as you you leave a stop give it gas and the car feels like it's misfiring?

Nope. Not at all. I've been running with these codes for at least a year, maybe 2.

Hmmm well now that just confuses the heck out of me... Why not pull the battery and reset the light?

That won't do anything useful. I know my o2 sensors aren't reading so even when I reset them with a obd2 reader they'll come back on after a few cycles.

I see well I did find a line coming from my EGR that was really bad and not connected so I got a new bit of hose and found where it went and issue is still there. The tranny seems to be pretty damn solid actually so I will probably check plugs tomorrow and check fuel pressure as well. I am thinking it's actually fuel pump or injectors or plugs, being as the car sat for a while with the previous owner.

Do the o2 sensors, knock sensors, intake manifold to plenum gasket, valve cover gaskets, plugs and coil packs all in one go under the hood. And when it's apart, clean out the EGR and make sure you check the condition of the wiring for the map/baro pressure switch solenoid, mounted underneath the lower plenum. Other things that would not be a bad idea to do, would be the fuel filter and PCV.

I started to pull it apart today and yeah it's in definite need of some TLC
upper intake
Attachment 4887
Throttle body
Attachment 4888
So yeah that's all getting cleaned and new gaskets of course and plugs coils and fuel filter will all be done too. I might also pull the injectors and have them flow tested and all the o rings replaced.
I just got a job so hopefully this car will progress a lot faster with that.
And I will be sure to check all other things you mentioned
