Flipping directional tires? (inside/outside tires)

I have Yokohama Spec II tires, which are inside/outside tires, but not rotation specific.

They are worn inside, and was wondering is it NOT recommended to have them flipped? If it is not recommended, what's the reason? Is it because the structure of the tire could be different from the inside wall and outside wall?

if its not rotation specific...how would 'they' ever know it was 'flipped'? :)

Because the outside wall says "face outside" and the inside wall says "face inside".

So if i flip the tires, the word "face outside" would be on the inside, and the "face inside" would be on the outside. So I'm just wondering if there are differences in sidewall structure that would be dangerous to flip them.

Its not the sidewall but the compounds of the treads. I believe they put a softer compound on the inside, an intermediate middle and a harder outside tread compound. This is all for proper performance. I cant see why this would be dangerous but it would make having these specific tires worthless.

If theyre non directional...put them on the other side of the car or just flip them and run it till they need to be replaced.

or just buy new tires.

I dont think id cut corners with safety issues...kinda like taping a roll cage together so it 'looks right'.

I think Auditech is right about the compounds being different for the inner and outter tread.

Also, I used the wrong term. I found out that my tires are called "asymetrical", but they are not directional.

I guess I'll ride these out, and get me a set of Falkens like everyone else. Maybe I should try some stretching too with skinnier tires...

uh, you do know stretching wears them out faster right?

Who cares if they wear out faster, if stretched is the look you are going for?
So does negative camber for that matter.
I'm sure everyone appreciates the input driftergirl, but very seldomly do you see vip cars let minor issues like tread life get in the way of acheiving the look they're going after.

As for the issue with flipping the tires, I've done it on some Falken Azenis before, just to make them last longer, but it's really not worth it, I would just save for new tires. If you're on a budget, the Hankook Ventus is great, and available in many low profile sizes.

I think driftgirl was just informing him about stretching the tires. Since the topic was flipping the tires inside to out, I think that he was trying to get more life out of the tires so stretching smaller tires would not help him/her achieve their goal.

I just run kumho ecsta ASX they are non directional and can be rotated. I run same size tire and offset front and rear for ease of roation.

Anyone flipping their tires at intervals to maximize life out of them....I think I should have done that at least every 6-7 months and know that I would like to flip the other rear tire since its directional can I flip it to the other side---confusing!!!...any thoughts...

i just flip it when it becomes worn as much as i'd want it to be.
but then again, its hard to see from the inside on slammed cars.

Its not only the tread pattern that designates rotation direction. It also depends on how the different materials are layered inside the tire before the rubber is molded around it. If they are directional tires and you run them the wrong way, you risk delamination of the material.
