OK guys I need all f your advice on this one!!!!

Hey I am in a bit of a pickle here:

I recently graduate from a university with a BA in Economics...now I am looking for a job. I have 7 years of sales and managerment experience (managing 3 people). This employment agency is trying to set me up with all these interviews, but they are all for sales positions and most pay only 30K. My current jobs pays nothing (~24K/year)...so this is still a bump up, but all of my friends are saying that I shouldn't settle for anything below 40-45K.

So what do you think? Should I continue trying to get business analyst position that I want (pays on average 55K) or settle for $30K and work my way up? The problem is that I've been looking for jobs for the past 2 months with no good leads...although I just began looking at the business analyst, project manager and other analyst postions few weeks ago. On one hand I can get a lower paying job fairly quickly here (I must sign 6 month contract though), OR I can continue looking until I get what I really want. My friends suggest the second option. What do you think? Or if you have other job suggestions, let me know.

I say wait until something you find something that you will like to do. What is worse than working 8-10 hours a day and not liking what you do??? Especially if you have to commit to a certain time frame.

what are you doing now? id say get an ok paying job for the time being and keep looking for the right job. when it comes to your future, dont just settle.

uh...why not get a temp job for right now, yet keep looking for other positions. what's the terms if you bail on the contract?

Yeah Im with the peeps that say take the job and keep and eye out for the better job in the mean time you are working and hell you might like the place and they might like you do your best to be the best and there could be early advancement which in turn means more doh...

I currenly live at home, so my bills are very minimal...the only thing is that I can't get the new car I want with the job I have. 

Here's what's making me think 3 times...right now I am a store manager, if I take that job I will become customer service representative...this could potentially hurt my resume since I am downsizing myself.

Tomorrow is my interview with the company that pays the 30K plus 4k in bonuses...we'll see how that goes. This is my second interview, so I will get a chance to see the office and the environment.

Show your interest in the company, you may have to lie just a bit, but tell them you feel you are a bit over qualified for the job and that the pay is not what you expected. Ask for more money, whats the worst that will happen, they will say no??? You need to show them that you are worth something to them and they will/should pay you accordingly. If you sell yourself high, it should pay off right off the bat

That's worth a try. After looking at the career path, it seems like the person who's looking for jobs for me failed to mention one little thing: after being a service representative I get to be a sales rep...and I am 90% certain that it's a comissions only job...even though I specifically told the recruiter that I don't want to do comission sales. If that's what i wanted to do, I had offers to become financial planner (pays A LOT more).

So I think I will go into the interview tomorrow and find out if it is in fact comissions position or if there are other career paths I can take that will allow me to use my brain instead of reading my "sales speech" off a piece of paper.

Take the job and continue looking. From personal experience and friends doing the same. We ended up getting in that lazy mode after so long and ended up just working at the ok paying job.

I know that this is not all about getting a new car, but if you don't have alot of bills and the job you have now is getting you by why would you want to lock yourself into a contract that says you cant leave for 6 months over wanting a new car?

What if a better job comes up? You can't take it.

Well, I visited the company on thursday...
The average age of people there is ~27, and most girls are freaking hot!
The upward mobility is insane, and some people have moved up within 2 months to a year...and each time you get promoted, it's a bump up in pay. I figured that even if the job doesn't pay a whole lot, I can at least get some marketing or analyst experience (both are available at the company) and a year from now look into getting a higher paying job and have easier time getting it.

So long story short: they made me a job offer which I accepted. Finally I can start my real career...or at least work on starting it.

Get the car first then look for a job ....  :)

The term you want to operate off is "get your foot in the door." Do whatever it takes to get your foot in the door, and then work vertically from that point... ideally, up. You want to kick ass at any company: you take a few mins every day to walk around and meet the co-workers, esp those in other depts, and befriend them, and learn and familiarize yourself with what they do. That way you get to the point where you become invaluable to the company, and if you can perform other people's tasks too, you are indispensible... i.e. you get more $$
