Y33: I did not realize how low I was>>>>>>
Sup fellas,
I did not realize how low I was untill I took of my 20" wheels.
I haited to take them off because my stock tires are all cracked and in
need of tires bad..but have to to sell my wheels..
I know some of you may think its not low enough but my exhuast is like 3" off the ground (ot the tips but, the piping) I have to go extremely slow in a few crazy angles in order not to scrape bottom...but I like it lower. ITs hard to tell in the photos just how low because the black moldings but if they were color matched it would deff be more noticable like the front. Those 20's really made a difference in clearance from the bottom..Now I know why Qoozy wanted 20's instead of his 19's..this is really making me consider if I should downsize..espeacially if I want an aero kit. There would be no way with an aero kit I would be able to pull into my driveway at this hieght..and I am guessing some 19's with some streched out tires may bring the clearance up about .5-1" but not much..here is a couple of photos for you guys to check out..critizim is welcom...
Suspension info incase you guys may ask
JIC adjustable coilovers for a Y32 custom drilled and fitted for a Y33..
I am about half way down on front and back. I could lay this car on the floor if I wanted to..I have about 2.5-3" more I could lower it in the front and in the rear about 3-4' more. I am not sure if the Y32's have more adjustability or if they are smaller but it seems like this car is really low for the amount of threads left..

Air ride would be nice..but I really like the stiffness in the ride with the JICs..it would be nice to raise and lower it however I will try to do a custom airbag set up with these JICs in the future if they last that long..hehehe..the lower you are the faster they will blow..*(..youll have to post your ride I am really curious to see how it looks..I bet nice..now you need a cima script decal for your molding to match the rear one you have..*)

If your gonna go with a body kit and you wanna play low, you have NO CHOICE but to go air. There is just no way you can ride low while having a thick body kit that reduces your ground clearance.
even with my 20" , it's a bitch sometimes.

Thats what Im sayin. Im not spending close to 4K on a kit and then scrappin that bitch all over town. I could just drive around throwing cash out the window, would be about the same. Plus with that lip on my wheels I need to be able to lay my Cima out to take full advantage. It looks sweet tuckin tire all the way to the rim. I couldnt resist taking the springs out to see what It would look like... LOL... SICKNESS. I cant wait.

And the thing is, with agressive fitment wheels you need a body kit. I never really thought about how the body rolls under the car untill I mounted my new wheels. The kit will make the wheels actually fit better. IMHO

Yup air is nice...and I am not saying its not,,but you cant roll super low on air either as if you have to slam on your breaks your car will take a serious nose dive and eff up your aero where a Coilover Air set up or just CO will prevent this from happening..There is pros and cons to each set up so why not just do them both.*) or drive slow and watch the roads..
If you fine tune your suspension perfectly Coilovers will be just fine. Just cause you have coilovers does not mean you cant adjust the the height just takes alot longer..Super low for pics and shows and a nice riding hieght for daily driving..

Well, my home boy works for Streetbeat and is hooking me up with a air management system to go with what ever air set-up I decide to go with. It supposedly had all sorts of cool settings, like turn the key and it goes to ride hieght. Three settings for where you want the car to sit, I figure: layed out, ride hieght, freeway hieght, then switches to do everything inbetween. So If I come to a road that looks alittle scetchy, Im raisin up to be on the safe side, then with the touch of a button Im right back to where I know my shit is lookin right, no guess work. His exact words were "I can make it so easy to opperate that your daughter could drive the car".

Look the difference between air and Coilovers are this
Air: you get more ride comfort and instant adjustabiliy,,
Coilovers:you less comftorable but much better handling
Air/coilover combo you get both
Coilovers better handling on corners and high speed driving (with proper ride heght)
Air: better for just cruising
Air: you can roll at a good hieght and slam it when you get to your destination
Coilovers: Allways at the same height unless you go home and adjust them.
Air: you can go more places because you can raise your car to get over speedbumps
Coilovers: you have to be a true player and park far and walk..
Its all about personal wants and needs..Some like air some like coilovers while some even prefer springs...Vip styling is about Beeing as low to the ground at all times..yes its nice to have the comfort of air but its also nice to have the comfort if you are driving real fast taking corners coilovers wont roll as much and take the corners much better..to me this counts..So when making up your mind about what way you want to go..take some of what I said into consideration..as both have thier limitations,,before thier was air theier wher coilovers, before coilovers thier was lowering springs, before lowering springs there was cutting your springs..its all worked and has evolved so to each his own..
One thing to take into consideration as well is this.. You can get a used set of coilovers for less than half of the cost of air..then you can add air later..to the coilovers..but trying to find a used air set up will be much harder so this means more $$ up front to lower your car....like I said to each his own..hope this helps.

Try lowering them down all the way up front. Thats how low my Y33 was. And daily driven too. ;-)
To be honest, it really wasn't all that bad either. I mean even the new owner doesn't have any issues with it, i mean it scraps the exhaust every now and then but who cares, it just exhaust.
And about air vs coilovers. most bolt on air bag kit won't allow you to go any lower up front than a coilover will, which is wack. I would even venture to say that somecoilovers will go lower up front than air.

Damn,, I could not imagine that..I will have to try it out..once the time comes..
Good point about the air vs Coilover..I forgot to mention that issue as well..Once again something that a Coilover/Air combo will take care of if not just some CO...your right though all the cars I have seen on bolt on air kits do look wack..

I'll still take air over coilover any day, just as long as it's installed with quality.
but yeah the y33 is a bitch to fix up, too many gremlins and issues when fixing up. The front spindle configuration, the low exhaust pipe, nasty USDM front bumper, bumper reinforcement issues. What a bitch.
there is absolutely no USDM support for this car, except for the BOMEX kit and you all know how freaking ugly the thing is.
You can't get a damn thing for a y33 here in the USDM.
Lexus GS*, LS* are a different story. So many suspension parts, aero and wheels specifically for each model, You can have a full blown VIP-EXE set up in 2 weeks time.

Hey did you used to work at intuit? I remember seeing a Y33 there with VIP badges for a while then it disappeared.
Anyway, Yeah coilovers suck for not being able to adjust hieght. All the reason I want a second car. If I need to go some where that has truck curbs. (ZION knows what I am talking about.....Wendy's on speedway) I would rather take a vehicle that is not as low. It'll just be a while before I can get air suspension. Gotta save up, import the misses. LOL

Well, that's not cool. If it were a custom air setup similar to Oneton's i'd agree. But personally I'd rather rock coilovers that are lower than most air suspension. It's not that hard to drive...
I'll probably offend some people with this comment but whatever. I'm constantly amazed at how unwilling people are to go low. I mean everytime someone posts up pics of their car, it's always followed with excuses of why it's not lower. I'm not taking a stab at anyone, just stating an observation.

i think that speaks to people forgetting/ignoring/disregarding/not caring about two fundamentals: wide and low.
outside of one ton vip, it seems that most people on air either don't or won't show pics of their cars at ride height. sure it looks great parked, but if it's driving at the same height as any stock ls/gs/is/q45/etc. then what's the point? i understand and sympathesize with those who have a myriad of reasons for not going low, but at the same time, one shouldn't be upset when people question whether or not the car is "vip". as one ton vip pointed out in a recent post:
One Ton VIP wrote:

height clearly plays a role in what the car does or does not project.
but i digress.
back on topic, zion 97, i think your car's at the height it needs to be on for now, and if/when you get new wheels, it's only a starting point! :D

Nice wirte up..and I totally agree..Wide n Low.
Yeah my car sits real nice right now..front and back is level. Once I get some 19's I will be able to adjust lower or higher and fine tune exactly what this car can do. I deff want to be low all the time.LOL and lower for shows and pics.he he hee...the only reason I would add air to my current sus is so that if neccessary I could raise up the car at a simple touch of a button..and get my way out of a pickle, you know those times when your rolling and you get cought in road contsruction traffic and the road is all effed up ..I could see my way out to the other side and make sure I never go that way again!..
But I would allways start with Coilovers first on a car that does not have factory air before I would consider air..

OK, its my turn to possibly offend. Ill not make apologies in advance, youll just have to live with me. Sure seems to me that there are some who like to make assumptions about things(and this is not directed at you zion). I just reread this thead and cant find anywhere were anyone said anything about "driving" anything but low.... Im mean seriously, thats the point isnt it? I could drive anything I want, I dont have to modify anything, but here I am. So why the assumption that becuase someone wants to install an air system it mean they dont want to be low? The real point is I want to be lower, way lower. And I want to pull up next to you at a light and if I feel high, Im gonna lay that bitch out. Shit I may even drive away draggin my kit just to let you know Im layed the fuck out. And then when that man whole comes, Ill lift it up to clean and if youre lucky I wont hit the switch on you again at full speed and throw sparks on your hood.

And then when that man whole comes, Ill lift it up to clean and if youre lucky I wont hit the switch on you again at full speed and throw sparks on your hood.

thanks a lot for your input. i currently run Megan Racing coilovers on my 240 right now and love how coilovers feel. but i understand that VIP is being as low as possible, not corners speed. so in that case air seems to be the way to go...but price will also affect me as a coilover set will cost half the price of air, and i can install coilovers, not air suspension.
again, good info and thanks.
