Japanese

Does anyone speak Japanese? Or want/ trying to?

im interested in learning, all I know are the bad words.  Anyone know a good program to learn off of?

Japanese for Dummies is really good. Comes with a CD too so you can learn to pronounce properly.

Having a Japanese Girlfriend VOl 1, is great. :p 

I just self studied and practiced with friends til I met my girl.

haha, I realy dont know any Japanese women,  I think ima try that Japanese for dummies, lets hope its on a torrent.

Rotary youth exchange program worked well for me. From zero knowlege (seriously, i didnt know how to say hello on the plane over there), to mid-90s on the nihongonoryokushiken (3kyu) in one year.
I still speak fluent enough for simple conversations and know the meanings of around 1000 kanji. Get a bit lost talking about politics etc tho

I bought a book at Parco in Chiba and I learned alot from that.

Having friends that speak Japanese is a HUGE help.

I DL'd the Rosetta Stone program, IDK if I'm doing it wrong, but I don't really know how to use it... maybe I just haven't played with it enough...

Gotta learn A LOT more before my next Japan trip in March :D

For the proficiency test 3 is about beginner-intermediate. 4 being lowest and 1 being highest. I would say I am at a 3 also. I suck at writing but can read a decent amount.

So I would think your probably higher than a 3.

So whats better Rosetta stone or Japanese for dummies.  I am looking to download these programs and get the ball rolling.

i know enough to go buy wheels, order food, meet people, and shop at the grocery store

Yeah, i could probably have barely passed level 2, but decided to blitz level 3 instead. In fact about half the other exchangers did level 2, and some of them did fail. The thing is, we had had no formal training in the weeks coming up to the exam so we were not that sure what to pick.
 
But right now, i probably couldnt even write the full hiragana/katakana set, but i can read them without thinking and have no trouble when using my PC!! hhaha. Its been 10 years this year since i went on exchange, and no classes/regular training since then. I really should get into a class!
