"Super Flush" AW11 MR2 (photos inside)

As some of you know, one of my favorite toys is my '85 MR2.
This car has been in the family since new (Dad bought it originally)
and I've had it since college.

A few years ago I blew the head gasket and decided to give it a makeover.
I've rebuilt a 4-AGE (pistons, rods, cams, valve springs, valves, Extrude Honed
intake, T-28 ball bearing turbo, air/water intercooler, standalone EFI, etc.)
and have started stripping the car for new paint.

As happens with these projects, one thing leads to another... I wanted some
super-crazy wheels for the car, but the Works and SSRs I looked at couldn't
be made in the exact offsets and pad configuration I wanted. I ended-up
having custom made AVUS wheels made for the car... of course, I made them
super-aggressive because I wanted to stretch the fenders a little before
painting the car.

Well... now, with the engine out of the car, it sits up like a stink bug.
I ended-up buying D2Racing coilovers so I could set the ride height
before painting the car. Out came the B&G springs and Tokico Illuminas,
in went the coilovers last night.

I still have a ton more work to do, but I figured you guys might appreciate
the wheel fitment. The body kit (factory side skirts and Buddy Club front
chin spoiler) and much of the trim is missing, but you'll get the idea here.

The tires actually tuck just a tiny bit under the arch, and the offset sticks
out a few millimeters; I haven't 100% dialed-in the camber yet.

Wheels are Avus AF-501 forged three-piece
18x8 front 2.0" lip, 215/35-18 Toyo T1-R
18x9 rear 3.5" lip, 235/30-18 Toyo T1-R

Tires have a nice subtle stretch to them... the guys at MR2OC.com said
8" & 9" couldn't be done. Wrong.

Thanks guys. It's an old car now, but I still like it. There aren't very many
nice ones on the road anymore...

As for color, I was thinking about changing the color to Ferrari Tour de France
Blue (one of my favorite blues). Lately, I've had a thing for blue cars, and I
figured this would keep the theme going.

One of the guys on the MR2 board painted his 1st gen MR2 a similar blue,
and as it turned out, I wasn't crazy about how the blue looked on this body
style. Also, to do a proper color change I would need to remove every last
grommet and bolt and paint the car as a shell on a rotisserie to be happy
with the job. I'd like to actually drive and enjoy this car, so I'm not 100%
sold on stripping the car down to a bare shell.

I'll probably keep it red - I might change it just a little to an OE Ferrari Rosso
red. The OE Toyota paint in '85 was a little toward an orange-red, but it
certainly 'pops' in the sunshine. Of course, I'll be using PPGs best paint
with clear (the factory red had no clear coat) and lots of color-sanding
and buffing.

The fenders need to be stretched and the windshield washer squirters, hood
emblem, and antenna are all going to disappear. Also, I'll either shave the
door handles or use a flush-mount handle (without key holes) from the rear
doors of a 91-93 Honda Accord. I was considering painting the roof black,
but it's sort of NSX-ish (already have one of those) and the stubby lines
of the 1st-gen MR2 don't really work with that look.

Otherwise, the car has a custom carbon fiber & suede dash, either Sparco or
Status Racing seats, HID headlights, LED exterior lights, and (of course)
the built & turboed 4-AG engine from hell.
This car should put down a bit over 300 rwhp- and it weighs about 2250 lbs.

VIP? no.
Fun? Absolutely!

Just don't ask how much I've spent on it!

funny you mention that... I'm a little active on MR2OC.com
My name there is "AW11onHREs" (the car used to have 17" HREs
back when I was Project Manager there).

Most of those guys don't "get" what I am doing with this car...
Of course many of the first-gen MR2 guys are 20 and asking about
what color primer they should use of where they can get a quarter
panel that isn't rusted-through.

Love the MKII also! I have my eyes on a friend's one-owner
'91 Turbo with 65K miles (titanium color on charcoal cloth).
Not sure I have room for it now with the NSX in the fleet.

I still love and enjoy the '85 Mister!

Thread from the dead... update...

Suspension is basically set, car is ready for paint now.
I just can't get over how cool-looking and unique this car is...
Will be even better with the side skirts + front & rear valences installed.

Not to mention 300 rwhp.

Beyond flush... a bit of poke!

lmfao. a little awkward, but hey its your car. after all, im sure somebody that builds a gs as nice is yours, knows what theyre doing. show some pics of the nsx. got some nice aggressive wheels on there? i remember joining an nsx board, and a good majority of these car owners have cruddy stance and wheel fitment.

Here's my Dad driving the NSX (I was hanging out the window of my brother's
GS300 working the camera). I went cheap on this car with 5Zigen FN01-RC
because I wanted something lightweight. I'll probably make an 18x8.5 19x11
set-up for it, but I don't have 18" center forgings so that's an entirely different
project that will have to wait.

This car is on Eibach/Bilstein with StopTech 2-piece rotors and Endless pads.
Still doesn't stop nearly as well as the GS (with 355mm StopTech Big Brakes)
but it is serviceable. This is the forst and last black car I will ever own. Yawn!
But I couldn't pass it up... I'm in the entire car with wheels/tires, suspension,
etc. for under $28K (it's a '94, love the fact that it's a hardtop)
