i hate the VQ engine
so...at 87,000 KM
it decides to create and exhaust leak
well, i go to the shop today to take a look at it, and i find out a few things
One, the VQ is the worst designed engine in the world with no room to work
Two, it wasnt just a manifold gasket, or o2 housing like i thought it would
Three, i get to drop the tranny to replace the rear cross manifold, becuase some idiot at nissan decided to put a flex pipe in it, which im sure the hour or two at 6,000 RPM didnt help at all not to heat and crack.
sooooo i spend 200 in parts to fix an exhaust leak that is taking away .4 bar of boost, but i cant install until 2 weekends from now......
And to top it off....i get to clean the house tonight....great huh.
just wanted to vent on the stupid nissan design...

Dont feel bad, i think Nissan has a habit of doing this. Think of all the poor 300ZX owners!
The VG isnt much better. When swapping my engine, the mechanic told me to replace all the exhaust bits towards the back of the engine, because he didnt want to have to take the engine out incase they needed replacing again.
Only $200? I havent walked away from my mechanic without parting with at least $400...

im doing the work, i never pay anyone to do my work
thats just in parts alone. acgtually its more than that cause the manifold is 18,200, the manifold gasket is 3,500 and the other gaskets are 1,200 each and i need two..
and i figure 6 hours of stall fees so 36 bucks...
Besides, when i reinstall the new ones, im going to heat wrap the RHS and rear manifold and do a few other things while the tranny is down....maybe fashion a tranny cooler as well.

my car too, i had to add power steering fluids, flush the coolant and change the oil and filter for the new owner... i wanted to make the motor cherry for the new guy so that he would enjoy the ride!!!! not too bad, the power steering fluid was $5 bucks at checker's and the fluid flush and service only came out $98 bucks.

Lucky you can do your own work.
You know the price we pay for nissan import parts here? I have checked with Nissan Australia, and then cross referenced it to Nissan Japan. At least 300% markup on all parts, usually more. An air vent which cost 1500y in Japan was $130 here in Australia.
Water pump? $600!
Its much cheaper to go through Robert, pay the buyer fees, then pay EMS postage here...

I've heard very similar stories on the Porsche Forums. Members there find that it's cheaper to buy parts from the Porsche Dealership in Portland Oregon and have it shipped to them in the UK than buying the parts from within the UK. Even with shipping and whatever taxes/duties, it's still cheaper so there must be a huge markup.

the vg is worse cause the block has a wider v angle compared to vq.
