Do you guys give money to panhandlers/beggars?

What's your take on giving money to these people? Do you give, or if you don't, what do you usually say? I try to give when I have a loose dollar or some change. Is it wrong that I sometimes want to prejudge somebody and wonder if they're just gonna drink it up. I know a friend who gave a guy his sandwich, and the man got pissed and yelled that he asked for some change, not food. I've seen a guy hold up a funny sign that said "I'm not gonna lie, I need a drink!". haha. I've also seen a guy where his sign was a little too nice, like it was professionally printed out, he couldn't be that poor. haha. Should I care what the guy thinks if he's at the corner of the intersection and I roll up in the vipcar and only give him a quarter? I've heard people say God comes in many forms, so that's one thing I think sometimes when I feel like helping the needy. I've heard others say, they don't bother because it could possibly be an opportunity for them to actually stick you up. I'm curious to what a guy's reaction would be if I gave him a lotto ticket. I hate the aggressive ones though, ya know the ones that are like "I know you got some money.",  but I try my best to treat them all respectfully. Anyway, just throwing out some ideas, what do you all think?

I'm an asshole. I tell them I don't have any money, after they see me buy something in the store and get change back. 

Why are there signs that say " Don't feed the bears" ? Because the bears will get domesticated, and lazy, and just wanting food from humans. 

If people keep giving homeless money, they will continue to rely on that, rather than finding a homeless shelter, and trying to overcome their hardship.  

That's just my take on it.

i feel sorry but this what happened to me.. coming back from work  took my exit off the freeway and a guy was standing with a card board sayin need money for food.. instead of giving him money , i go out of my way and get him "in n out"... come back..i stop on the side of the road with my hazzerds and go give it to him and guess what he does.. throws it at my face.. i dont blame him in a way.. they are so addicated to alcohol or even drugs that they dont want their money to go anywhere else as thats what makes them feel better.. but  we cant do nothing about that.. the fact is that the thought is what counts... at least we give them something rather than nothin..

It really makes no difference if you give them something or not. If you dont somebody else eventually will. But I think it is ignorant to think that God or karma will come back to you because of this. If you think they will just because you want something good to happen to you, that defies the purpose of helping them then.

Well I give when I have a little extra. Its just my nature to do so. But there are some homeless people that I don't give money to. The ones who you say are aggressive or ride the train going around asking for money to everyone. Its like if you can pay to get on the train then you don't need to be begging for money. I usually get on the soft side for the ones that say they were a veteran but they must look like one. I remember seeing this sign "BET YOU $1 THAT I CAN GET YOU TO READ THIS SIGN!". :smiley:  If I don't want to give them money, I just say I don't have any change.

I never give them money, ever, no matter what the excuse is.

But I give them food sometimes. I bought a burrito for one once, and he seemed very grateful (and surprised).

A little good karma never hurts.

I always liked what my dad does, go to Mc Donalds and get some $5.00 gift certificates, then give those out.

I guess it depends on my mood...and I do stereo type bums..SO look rough while other looks like they just started out on thier new venture..I tell my children to make the right choices in life or they will end up like one of these bums in the streets..So if I think there authentic I will give what I can give food or money.

was walking into a gas station the other day, beggar said, "come on man, I need some money," I reply, "shit man, I need money too.  we in the same boat."

hahah everytime i leave from my girlfriend's house theres always a bum standing outside the trolley station with that sign up. and what do you know, i gave that son of a b**** 3 bucks to buy himself a 40 ounce. first time i ever saw that, so i tipped him off with a few bucks to get faded. hahaha.

Let me give you an example of why I dont.  My store is on the corner of Bellaire and Hwy 6, a very busy intersection here in Southwest Houston, Texas.  Lots of beggars are on the corner panhandling for money.  After they are out there for a few hours, I see them in my shop.  Now, it would be cool if my shop was some sort of convient store or something with food, but it isnt.  Its a smoke shop.  Do I even need to speak futher?

For me it all depends on the creativity put into their sign..hahaha!

i usually just reach into my pocket and whatever i have in there is theirs since i usually only carry at the most like 30 bux in cash and the rest is check card status I will be known to hand them some cool $$$ from time to time.... give it away like it means nothing... and you will recieve more like it's nothing.... words to live by.

They think I'm a baller there. haha. But then again when I go, its just vacation time for me with money to burn.

I never give them any money. If illegal immigrants can find jobs ,why can't they? There have been guys that walk around  offering to cut my grass or wash my cars for money. They have to earn there money some how.
I need all my change, dam vending machine prices keep riseing at work.

I do give on occasion but not to the guy thats on the same corner or lot all day everyday after awhile it gets old.

There was an expose on it on TV here in Australia, about how much money beggars actually get on the streets. In some areas they get up to $50 an hour begging, its serious cash.
 
They followed one bum home on the train, and he went into a normal looking house.... Presumably because begging on the street makes more money than most jobs.

Dom's right........About more money involved in begging than working, there's not alot of people that beg here (If TV is anything to go by) compaired to USA.......So I suppose that's why they get more money (Or we are just more generous)......I dunno. 
 
I give when I can, but only because being homless is my worst fear..........

i give whenever i can also. its not that i believe in karma or expecting good things to come my way. and its true theres a little of God in everyone so i just want to show respect to my fellow brothers. i do my part to respect them but if they choose to deny my respect and use it on things other then food then thats completely out of my control and some things just cant be helped.

The other night while I was downtown, some bum asked me if I had a quarter. I just came out a convenience store, so I actually had 2. I gave the guy 1 and he went on his way.

If I have a few coins out, I'll give them a couple, but I'll probably never reach into my wallet.
